Fisheye's; Tokina v Sigma v Rest

I have a Canon 70D and one of the shitty Samyang fisheye's.

I am looking to upgrade.

Currently looking at either the Tokina 10-17mm 3.5 - 4.5 OR at the pricier end, the Sigma 8mm 2.8.

Any thoughts on these, or other lenses? I'll be mainly shooting in nightclubs.

shooting in night clubs is tough on a lens, there really isnt a lot of light, and because a lot of the lights move around around flaring is a huge issue too. does it have to be a fish eye, or will a wide angle work?

i have used the tokina 11-16 f2.8 with reasonable results, but i wouldn't say im thrilled with them, i find myself wishing for something faster - light is a real pita in nightclubs

if it doesnt need to be super wide what about the rokonin/bower/samyang 24mm f1.4? i have heard a lot of good stuff about this lens (especially if you intend to go full frame later) - although i have not personally used it

at the end of the day look for something fairly fast (i would recommend a minimum of f2.8), but if you can go lower it will only improve your results.

Jake,

First off, what are you shooting inside of the nightclubs? Stills or Video?

Second, which Samyang fisheye do you own? The 8mm f/3.5?

Third, what other lenses do you own?

By answering these questions, I would be more than happy enough to help suggest a lens that would benefit you while shooting in night clubs.

Thanks!

^^ he is correct

I have made my suggestions based on video, if you are shooting photos you can ignore what i have said

I mean, the samyang fisheyes are fine, its a fucking fisheye.

If you want something baller, get the 8-15L, otherwise the samyang will be just as good as everything you listed.

Thanks for everyone's feedback :)

Okay firstly I am shooting stills. I have a Canon 430EX II flash so light isn't a huge problem

I actually have the Tokina 11-16 2.8 already and its my go-to lens when shooting in clubs. Really like it.

And yep current fisheye is the Rokinon 8mm 3.5 (not Samyang)

Reason for upgrading is I just find the Rokinon really shitty, and I love my 11-16. I also do a bit of video work outside clubs and the Rokinon is horrific for filming.

You also may be wondering why I am getting a fisheye when I have the wide angle. Reason being just a bit more diversity in my photos. I do it for work and the fisheye effect is nice in moderation.

Cheers for everyone's feedback :)

Thanks for giving us some more info Jake!

I think for what your fisheye lens is worth, it's going to be hard to beat. Its nice to have diversity in your photos. Fisheyes can be used for various types of images. In your case it should be used for close distance and interior photos. Get close to your subject, don't be shy!

The Rokinon 8mm may not be the sharpest lens, but its nice to keep in your bag for when you do want a different perspective on things. Honestly there really aren't too many fisheye options out there for a APS-C sized sensor.

That being said, if you already have a 8mm fisheye and a 11-16mm, then why not fill the next gap in your focal range? I would recommend you looking into the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8.

Jake, would you mind posting one of your favorite photos you've taken at a nightclub, with your Rokinon 8mm?

Thanks for all your help Nick!

I have a Sigma 18-55 2.8 and 70-200 4, so there isn't really a gap I need to fill!

I could put the funds towards a radio transmitter.

But yep I see what you mean about not getting that much more fisheye for the price.

Here are a few shots;

Thanks for your help !!
