First US Ski Team fight?

The length of this thread and some of the posts within lead me to one conclusion, it really needs to snow.

I dont think anyone believed that Newschoolers.com created drama, its the people that go on the website that do, along with people who frequent instagram, facebook, etc. No one website is solely responsible

You've made this point multiple times across multiple websites, why are you so sensitive about the amorphous opinion of NS? You are dominating in terms of unique visitors, and I'd imagine your retention numbers are excellent, and the passion that people have for NS, myself included, is indisputable, so why obsess over this so much? It's starting to come across as desperate and approval seeking, brother.

Thiss is Tanner Hall

Well Willem, I just don't like the mentality that the Olympics and other hardcore comp skiing produces, basically people treating skiing like some kind of jock sport. Sure, I enjoy watching the X games and other comps, but I am not a fan of the style that competitions breed, although I love watching how Phil, Henrik, and Wallisch interpret comp skiing, But I really don't care for "bringing more viewers to our sport." Save the pow for me, I don't want any more people to be "into" skiing. That seems to be a big part of the stoke about the new events in the Olympics, that it will bring more fans and consumers and money into skiing. I just don't want that. And it is drawing focus away from films. I'll be honest, I think ski movies suck a lot more now than they did a few years ago. Stept is probably the only company holding it down with legit movies. (i would say the same for 4bi9 but not too sure if they still make movies...)
Whatever, bottom line is most of you don't know Tanner, he's the fuckin man and he's as real as it gets. And he's produced some of the greatest film segments of all time. Whether or not he's clownin on these kids, I can't believe some of the hate you know-nothings are spitting out towards him.
Once again, you all should read the Jaded Local in the November issue of Powder mag. It's the best commentary on skiing I've read in years.

Do you know if it's online anywhere? I looked for it on their site but couldn't find it. It should be posted in this thread for sure.

Admittedly this shit is like my kryptonite or something like that. Its a sore spot, and I will admit to getting semi childish. Since I am in the industry pitching the business side of things constantly (remember one of my main jobs here is selling advertising, and working with the sales guys to do so) - I'm always hearing the feedback on Newschoolers. People within the industry who are not so internet savy (read: lots of 'em) almost every time say "Oh yeah Newschoolers... that is where all those kids talk shit right?".

So its a sore spot. Maybe I shouldn't say sore... because I'm very confident about it - but I always try to iterate to them that hate has always existed it wasn't new. However, because they don't see hate in one of the magazines they read, they believe it is solely located on Newschoolers.. and that this place is some spawn of satan. If only we could control it, they might be able to put their brand message beside it.

So within this situation, I've got a unique opportunity to actually show the world directly within their own context that in fact, hate is everywhere. Nothing proves a point like a marketing manager, athlete or team manager coming across a thread with their bros in it and seeing iron-clad logic directly in their face.

In closing, I'm totally confident about Newschoolers. I however want to educate people on properly understanding the internet. It'll make the sport better.

But why cease to be extreme? Personally I sieze every opportunity possible to be extreme.

As long as I'm not hurting anybody I never cease the opportunity to seize my passion. That makes a person awesome.

Tanner Hall is a uneducated white "Rastafarian". I can't believe I used to look up to him. I wanted to be him. Being almost 30, you'd think he'd learn how to spell or even conduct himself in a mature manner. Tanner has slowly become a big ass bust. He's scared that his relevance wont mean anything. He's done a lot for skiing, but he's ruining his own legacy. Torin at least has a level head on him..

Torin, good job standing your ground. More respect for you.

Tanner, you're like a child star trapped in the past. Grow up and be the inspiration you should be.

Like a Lion sucked by the way. You're no lion, you're a Hyena.

Dude Sunny was legit. It's getting harder to make "classic" movies because it's harder to make ground breaking movies.

Tanner I love you so much but if at all possible. Stop calling people retarded. It is a shame to call someone that who has control over it.

I read like two sentences and realized this was just garbage, its Tanner's life not yours. I can't believe this has gone on for 9 whole pages! Oh well

Let me pose this question, coming from someone who has met both multiple times. Do you guys think (meaning NS as a whole) that CRJ would've been friends with someone (Tanner) who is a "Hyena" to the sport? The two were as close as it gets. Fuck, Tanner has a tatoo of CRJ. I don't think someone as intelligent, forward thinking, and down to earth as CRJ was would consider someone like Tanner as an accomplice of his if he was a "hyena" as you call him. Tanner calls it like it is and you're nothing but a pussy who takes the sport too seriously if you find that to be offensive.

Long live freedom of speech combined with sarcasm.

I'm guessing they are trying to raise the profile of NS to be perceived as a more mature content publishing house rather than an immature gathering of 14 year olds making 500 page threads about clothing. Not sure why it would matter, as long as impressions are high the ad revenue would be fine?

Yeah I feel you for sure. Honestly though I think the Olympic presence in freeskiing is going to help the film side of things a lot. I think it will probably create a finer line between contests and filming and will give the film side of things more to rebel against. I think the same thing has kind of happened in snowboarding. You have the Shawn White and then you have Videograss. Even if most skiers don't like Videograss, you have to respect what that kind of snowboarding has done for their sport. Its made the film side much more popular for actual snowboarders. I can see the same thing happening in skiing. Also, its not like pow skiing will be in the olympics.. if anything it will popularize skiing in the park, but wont do much for the backcountry side of the sport.

This is sad, when skiing becomes so competitive that there are fights breaking out over it, that's sad. Come on, stop acting like it's the Oklahoma Texas game or something, cause it's not. Skiing is what all of us live for, and honestly, whether you're on the team or not, it doesn't matter, all these guys should be like best friends, the competitiveness of this whole thing is way outta control. All these guys are so fucking good, they shouldn't be so down on each other, seriously, they should be working together to progress the sport, and if they make the team, then they know that they've been working hard and that they deserve it. Stop with all the negative vibes.

Billards is the only educated sounding person in this thread. Congrats everyone. Even Mr. Bishop managed to look like a fool.

I don't understand this negativity. Like there should be no negative consequence to skiing being allowed in the Olympic except for butt hurt hipsters not liking their sport becoming too "mainstream". Like you say that the Olympics will take away from the film focus of skiing... Where are you possible getting the data to support that claim? Like look at snowboarding, it's been in the Olympics for awhile now, and I can tell you that That's it, That's all, and The Art of the Flight, still shit on any ski movie made, and both those flicks were obviously released post Olympic inclusion of snowboarding.

Like you are correlating recent ski movies sucking with increasing interest with skiing in the Olympics, well sorry to break it to you but correlation dose not equal causation. So pretty much all your claims for not liking direction skiing is taking with regards to the Olympics, has virtually no basis at all. All I know is that the Olympics will actually allow certain riders to finally be able to live comfortable lives that can be finally comparable to other professional sports, and in general allow for job opportunities and growth in the skiing community. I just don't get how anybody can be against that.
