First time in the park

how was your experience when you first started skiing park.

just wondering cuz this year ill be hitting the park for the first time. just wana knowif theres anything that pisses people off the most when they are trying to do their thing.

yes i have common sense so save the stupid answers, im just looking for things that a new person wouldnt know.

My first year of park was really annoying but really rewarding. I had already been skiing for like 12 years when I tried park so I got really pissed off that I was awful at it despite being really good at skiing. But it was also really fun because after a couple years of feeling like there was really nowhere else for me to progress without access to a heli or snowmobile, suddenly I suck again and there is tons of new stuff to get good at.

call your drop-in
don't make turns down the landing(creates ruts)
don't stand on the deck.
don't roll over the take off
don't hit a jump if your not confident in landing.
Be aware of everyone else and you'll be straight.

double post sorry but that was just for jumps
Don't side jump rail/box take-offs (texas air)
Don't stop in front of features unless your waiting in line to hit it.
Don't stop behind a feature

Respect other people

Be confident in the features and jumps you're headed for

Never bitch out of a feature. It won't end well if you overcommit and then bitch out

You're going to fall, and fall a lot depending on how aggressively you start at it.

Don't be concerned with what other riders might think of you, they're doing their own thing, and 9 times out of 10 they'll be happy for you if you're toughing out some spills.

This!

I've skied since I was a wee tyke, Park skiing opens up a whole new world full of new challenges. I switched to primarily park, trying to improve my skills so I can eventually take it to the BC and maybe shoot some urban this year.

just stay out of the way

dont be embarrassed to try new things and fall

1) no one will laugh

2) if people actually make fun of you they are probably just douche bags (unless you look like a gaper)

3)have fun

4)have fun

5)dont take it seriously

that. only dbags who suck themselves would ever make fun of you. just wait your turn when necessary, call your drop (tell people if youre about to go next), dont chill on landings.. that's about it. have fun be respectful kick ass!

wow thanks guys.

im not really worried about wat others think but it also takes the fun out of it when you have to listen to people hate all days. i just hope to make friends and take my skiing to a whole new level.

what would be the first thing i should try doing?

throw some dubs down. no probly just gauging how much speed and air you need to get over the knuckle then start with 180 and work up. dont move on till you got the trick your working on dialed

Just do whatever feels fun for you. Try a bit of everything and stick with whats enjoyable. Learn 1's/3's or try to work your way up to flat rails, whatever. Its all fun.

have fun man..dont worry about what people think. Be friendly, and you will have a grand ole time

:-) This post made me smile, i'm starting the park this winter too and hopefully get my first powder day too. . . :) Let me know how it goes :)

ok first things first,

1) acquire over sized, really loud skullcandies

2) get an iPod, fill it with Wu-Tang and biggie

3) never enter the park without at least 2 tall-ts on

4) SAG SAG SAG, goggles, pants, hats, underwear, even your headphones

5) disrespect all snowboarders, they are there to ruin the park

6) don't hit a jump unless you can cork-9 off it

7) If you try a rail, make sure to pretzel it

8) AFTERBANG!!!!!11!!1!!!!

9) Disrespect women

10) Acquire currency

You will be pro in no time

most skiers are sweet dudes due to comradery and such, just ask for advice and watch other guys, make buddies with people around your skill level, its much easier to progress with a group of guys who push each other to do a cool trick

When I started I thought everyone was judging what I did and how I looked, but in the end everyone in the park is really relaxed. I could care less if someone who just started took a bail on the flatbox cause we were all there. Just have fun you know talk to people if your sessioning a rail it can be a great way to meet someone. You will enjoy it it's a lot better then racing where everyone is competitive and everyone talks behind each other's back.

Do tricks that you think are fun to do and enjoy skiing park with friends. Don't feel like you need to step up to bigger features/tricks if you don't actually want to yourself. People like to see new kids in the park having fun and progressing, but not a lot of people want to see someone get hurt cause they wanted to prove a point.

THIS! last year was my first year in the park and i skied with one of the seniors in my highschool and he teached me how to 180 in one night and started teaching me how to slide boxes which i dont have on lock yet.... :(

true story. or ride with snowboards and have your mind blown at the stuff they do. it makes you way more creative. not to say skiers arent, but snowboarders definitely look at things differently than we do.

I can't image why any skier wouldn't try snowboarding at least a little bit or vice versa. I know I put in a few years on a snowboard and I think it changed the way I ski.

being only 1 season into the park scene id say follow the advice of have fun and dont get in the way, as well as be respectful and nice and nearly everyone in the park is chill to you. also dont do what i did and try to go too big too fast because that never ends well.

I'm really glad someone made this thread....i'm doing park for the first time this season and these posts have all been super helpful

last year was my first year in the park so i know how you feel... just get in the park and try just about everything dont be scared respect others dont be an ass and you will progress really fast and have a great time you will see

if its your first time in the park and you look like you could be good (eg nice gear) try talking to people and asking them how to do what you wanna learn because if you act like you know what your doing your ganna get more shit than if you kinda admit that you suck and have others help. /runonsentence

One of my first times in the park, I was trying to ski the halfpipe and I accidently dropped my pole. I knew my friend who doesn't ski pipe would be coming down the center after me and would pick it up for me. Nevertheless, once I get to the bottom and stop to wait for my friend, some girl skis up to me and says "learn some fucking etiquette, douchebag" then skis away.

In conclusion, I think that girl may use this site, so if you do, Fuck you.

The first couple times int he park I had mixed results, some kids were douche bags and would laugh if my 3's were sketchy on the landing and stuff that like and people would cut you off if you were checking out a box or something...
Then at some other points some guys would come over and ask me how the C box was today in its new location and it was chill talking about it and hitting it with them... I guess just ignore the shit people give and try an be chill with everyone else

Oh also. Don't worry about how good you are. Odds are that everybody else is as bad or worse than you are. My best trick is a 5, and I'm still normally the second best skier in the park at Vail.

And don't be afraid to try stuff. Even the best skiers will like you more if you actually decide to try instead of just skiing past.

Don't be the biggest douche out there... that covers just about everything....first time in the park might be scary as shit though, like "what the fuck? thats a motherfuckin rail holy shit man!" but its not that big of a deal

I remember when I rode my first pipe at Bromley. There was no skiers allowed in the pipe, snowboarders would throw snowballs at us and heckle us all day. Pretty funny to think about now.

start off with a flat box go straight onnext when u have that dialed go straight on but try to slide sideways on the boxthen try to 45-90 on the rail if u feel comfortableonce ur going fully sideways on the box then try a flat rail
