yeah. my beloved ski mobile. a 2008 volvo s80 t6 that i love dearly.

i was going around 25 through a neighborhood on the way to school today and i started to skid on some ice around a turn. i was stupid and i was going too fast i guess. my tail flung out and i countersteered and got my car parallel to the curb but it was too late and my car slammed into the curb sideways, deploying some airbags on the passenger side of my car. after that, it wouldnt run properly and the engine stuttered and my front right wheel is not turning or rotating.

i think its the A strut or whatever or something involving the steering (i dont know a ton about cars)

the front wheels are basically like this | | / /

the fact that the engine isnt running right and the airbags makes me fear that shes totaled but im hoping for the best.

what do you guys think? im pretty sure my insurance might be fucked but the tow truck driver who took my ride said that theres a chance it can be fixed without telling the insurance.

any of you guys have experience and can tell me what to expect?

also, car accident thread mayb

no way does slamming into a curb doing 25 total a car. get your alignment checked, might have to replace an axle, and get your car computer back to normal.

I doubt it's totaled, but will definitely be expensive. My mechanics told me that replacing airbags in my car cost about $4k per. Alignment could be screwed up in your case and you probably want to have them look at CV or UV joints and boots. I did something similar in an old Subaru. The mechanics missed something when they fixed it and the front wheel drive ultimately failed. Vibes to you. I know how much that sucks. Ironically someone did the same thing and ended up in my front yard a few nights ago. I saw the tracks the next morning. The hurt the curb, popped up into are yard and slid about another 15 feet sideways. Their alignment is definitely screwed.

its not totaled. In my friends pathfinder we hit a curb paralell sliding doing almost 40mph and it still runs. You fucked a control arm, and bent some other shit along with it, probabbly bearings are a bit fucked but no. Its not a write off.

even if it costs a few grand to fix I'd avoid insurance at all costs. you'd no doubt pay far more in higher premiums over the next few years than it would cost to get it fixed.

That's what you get for driving while sick. You didn't take enough emergenC.

But yeah, pay outta pocket. You'd still have to pay some amount of deductible anyway, and depending on the damage/your policy that could be a large percentage of the overall cost and will come with higher premiums.

Thankfully no one, you included, was hurt.

The engine might be fine. Cars have a switch that flips when you hit something that cuts of the engine .. prevents fires and stuff.

So what actually happened was you were going 45 in a 25, took a corner fast

and got rekt like the cheeky skrublord that you are?

I have a glass of emergen c by me as I write this, staying safe.

Most cars won't allow the vehicle to run if the airbags were deployed to avoid a possible fire and as for your wheels, It sounds like you might have snapped/bent a control arm. When this happened to me it cost like $600 for the labor and parts for my 2003 Hyundai Tiburon. As stated the air bags will be expensive. If your insurance company has accident forgiveness, id highly recommend you just go that route. Do whatever gets you on the road again in a safe vehicle.

Why did the airbags deploy? I know how they work but I feel like hitting the curb should not make them deploy...

ok so i just talked with my mom and the mechanics

first off you guys are right about my speed. i had to have gone faster i guess im just lying to myself to feel better but i honestly think i know the truth.

as for damage, its some control arm, axel, a strut, some joint, and something with the engine (i forgot what he said specifically) and the airbags too/interior work. the guy said over the phone "its not pretty."

current estimate is at 6500 total with new parts and labor and what not. my mom has a good agent and im on her insurance thankfully so maybe that will help me. i also found the airbags which deployed and theyre 75 dollars on ebay so maybe that will help me? idk but im hoping.

overall its pretty awful and i know my insurance will be screwed. ill definitely be having to pay this off this summer..

so.. at the very least im hopeful and thankful that i think my car will be back and that i dont have to buy a different one. so yeah.

as far as insurance goes, i know its around 1000 a year according to my mom. have any of you been in accidents and could you tell me how much i can be expecting the insurance to rise?? i know it depends on the value of the vehicle so im thinking that with the accident decreasing the vehicle value maybe it wont rise too much?? input is appreciated.

It'll go up a good amount. I hit a Honda civic (an old one) In a Land Rover disco and did 3200 worth of damage to it. My insurance went up almost 100$ a month because of it.

6500 though? Maybe you should look in to scrapping it and getting something else, although I don't really know what your car was worth.

the car was bought in 2011 for around 30k and its worth like 20k because of the condition (until now) and the barely 38k miles on it.

If you were going 25 you wouldn't have even spilled your coffee.

ahaha

if you really wanna know though, my mom bought this on her own (shes a doctor, so.) and she originally bought it for my grandmother as a present on her 70th bday as she wanted a nice safe whip to cruise with all her old lady friends and go to chruch and shit in. well a few years later i get my license and my grandma isnt doing great and can barely drive more than 2 times a month too so she lets me use it and its basically become my car. i never asked for it so i wouldnt call myself spoiled. just lucky.

hell, i wanted a 2500 dollar VW golf lol, but im lucky and unlucky right now.

Light it on fire just to be sure.

Sounds like you messed up your axle to me. Hope you've got a deep pocket.

i dont know why you guys are questioning his speed so much, if you hit ice going 25 around a corner you could easily slip out and presuming it was a side street the car most likely wouldn't of scrubbed off all that much speed before hitting the curb.

If it was sunny and dry out, thats a different story, but if its cold enough for ice to form on the roads and without winter tires i see this as completely possible

Maybe it's because we all are used to driving on icy roads and not smashing into curbs.

yeah this , when i slid i was at max like 5-7 feet away so thats why i believe i wasnt too fast

do you typically take residential corners at 25 though?

this is important im suprised i havent said this.

so to add, the curb wasnt a 90 degree turn. it was a 3 way intersection shaped like a 'y' and i crashed at the tip of the v. so with it not being too sharp of a turn, i didnt seem to think i needed to slow down past like 20-25. if it was a L shape turn yes i would have been slowed down past 20 but in that kind of intersection i didnt really think i had to. stupid me.

All I got from this is that your parents will be paying a pretty penny on your premium. As for the damage, since you know nothing of cars this next part is of no use but all the items you listed could easily be fixed in a home garage saving labor costs (though Im sure insurance will cover it).

As for your story, sounds a little fishy. Volvo's are great winter vehicles and 25mph for a t6 on a maybe icy road seems wrong. I feel you are right when you say you are lying to yourself, had to be going faster. Anyways you seem like a good kid taking responsibility for his actions so hats off to you, good luck.

I hate to sound like I'm trying to make myself less guilty but another thing I forgot to add aside from the details of where I crashed, is the fact that my tires were very low on tread and they were due to be replaced this Monday. Shitty luck.

you probably just need to go through insurance and prepare to get raped by your premium the next 5-10 years. then sell the car and buy something cheaper

yeah it looks like thats whats going to happen..

You should talk to your parents and see if one of them can say they were driving when the accident happened. Crashes don't do nearly as much to your premiums once youre 25 the older. If that's not gonna happen, pay the deductable and get it fixed! It's not gonna be totaled and you and your mom aren't gonna fix it in your garage.

ok first off yes id look into buying the airbags used and have your mechanic instal it. also look for a used strut and ask for your mechanic to do the same for all parts. if he won't take it to someone who will. that alone will save you 1-2 grand. coming out a couple situations similar to this i know how it goes. i drifted my bmw threw some dudes lawn and then into a curb deploying the side air bag and bending the rear control arm. also slid my forster into a curb rallying around one night in the snow.. it was a epic drift up until then. but i did all the work myself and seeing how your moms a doctor I'm guessing thats not something you know how to do. if so do it. ultimately its mainly labor your getting charged for so you may be able to negotiate on that. mechanics will not hesitate to take advantage of someone who is uneducated about the problem. so educate yourself.... ya thats about it.

The really shitty part about this is that it's a volvo. It's going to be an absolute bitch to repair, and it was probably an engine mount if anything.

I would say, post it on craigslist for cheap af, and get yourself a nice beater.

You fucked up and I guess you'll pay more attention in the future? That's about all there is to say about accidents like this.
