Figure this out?!

Ok last night someone posed a question to me that made my head want to explode....so perhaps one of you will be able to figure this out.

There are three friends who go to a motel for the night. They split the $27 bill into equal thirds meaning they each pay 9 dollars.

The manager decides he wants their business again so he decides to refund them 5 dollars.

He then gives the $5 to an errand boy who brings it to the room. The little boy realizes that there are three friends and 5 dollars so he keeps two and gives them three.

With the refund each friend pays only 8 dollars. meaning the room cost $24.

So if they pay $24 and the errand boy keeps his $2. What happend to the other dollar?

yea. AHHHH

look at it as a whole 27$ bill they get refunded $3=$24

I'll drive it untill the wheels fall off, then I'll buy new wheels!

Remember where you find what each guy ended up paying the $9 well, you subtract the 1 from the 10. Therefore once you achieve $27, you subtract the $2 to get $25 - the amount paid for the room.

"With the refund each friend pays only 8 dollars. meaning the room cost $24."

You let this throw you off. Its completely irrelevant to the actual problem.

A woman shoots her husband.

Then she holds him under water for over 5 minutes.

Finally, she hangs him.

But 5 minutes later they both go out together and enjoy a wonderful dinner together.

How can this be?

problems like this are ALWAYS way easier than they seem.

I'll drive it untill the wheels fall off, then I'll buy new wheels!

no, you're wrong, they didn't pay 25 dollars for the room, 3 from 27 is 24.

Everyone keeps saying "i got it, it works out" but then they don't say how it works out, but if you know how it works then you can easily explain it. I'll explain it later if no on else does first, i don't want to ruin it for people trying to do it.

heres a really dope one, those who think in black and white wont get it...

your on a gameshow and your in the final prize round. you have a choice between three doors to choose. one has a car and the other two have smelly goats. they are numbered door A, B, and C. Lets just say that you pick door "a", If I told you that door "b" had a smelly goat behind it, would you change your answer???? I'll post the right thing to do and the explanation in a bit.

I’ve had it the whole time. All three paid 9 dollars apiece, 27 total. The manager refunded 5 dollars, making the actual room cost 22 dollars. Among the rebate money, the three friends get $3 and the boy keeps two. If you can add...22+3+2=27. Problem solved. That number of $24 per-person is completely irrelevant and designed to throw you off. Its not that hard.

you change your answer because you have a 2/3rds chance of being wrong on the first guess, so if you eliminate another door, that means the other one has a 2/3 chance of being the correct one.

i posted this version of this riddle in the riddle thread a while ago

Three friends check into a motel for the night and the clerk tells them the bill is $30, payable in advance. So, they each pay the clerk $10 and go to their room. A few minutes later, the clerk realizes he has made an error and overcharged the trio by $5. He asks the bellhop to return $5 to the 3 friends who had just checked in. The bellhop sees this as an opportunity to make $2 as he reasons that the three friends would have a tough time dividing $5 evenly among them; so he decides to tell them that the clerk made a mistake of only $3, giving a dollar back to each of the friends. He pockets the leftover $2 and goes home for the day! Now, each of the three friends gets a dollar back, thus they each paid $9 for the room which is a total of $27 for the night. We know the bellhop pocketed $2 and adding that to the $27, you get $29, not $30 which was originally spent. Where did the other dollar go????

and then a funny answer...

The following night two friends check into the same motel. Once again the clerk charges them $30, or $15 per person. After the clerk remembers the total rate is only $25 he sends the bellhop upstairs with five $1 bills to pay the two friends back. The bellhop knows he got away with larceny once so he tries it again. But this time he pockets $3 and returns $2 to the hotel guests ($1 per guest). So each of the two guests got $1 back from their original $15. Therefore each paid $14 which is a total payment of $28 for the room. Now the bellhop has $3, the guests paid $28, for a total of $31....THERE'S THE MISSING DOLLAR!!!!

well, for starters, spyderxtra didnt get it, and no one else really did either, quinny was probably right but didn't really say what most people do wrong. spyderxtra's explanation explained where the 5 dollars in the rebate went, which wasn't even the problem, dumbass.

and the $8-per-person = $24 paid isn't there to confuse you, and it's true. the only confusing part is that you should subtract the two dollars that the bellboy kept, not add it back on to the bill, which no one has said even though everyone said they got it.

you cant have a 1/3 and 2/3 chances if there are only two things there, one of them is the car, one of them is a kick-ass goat, id say you cant go wrong, but if you want a car, you got a 1 in 2 chance cause there are only two choices

the very first person in the thread had it right. Quinny has also explained it right more than once. Unless you're saying nobody said where the dollar went. In that case it went nowhere.

The bill is 27.

Each friend pays 9.

9*3=27

bill is 27 dollars. The refund is 5 dollars.

27-5=22 for the room.

3 dollars of the 5 dollar refund go to the friends.

22+3=25

2 dollars of the 5 dollar refund go to the bellhop

25+2=27.

Every dollar is now accounted for.

The way its worded screws you up. Even though they each payed 8 and their room bill is still 25, not 24. The bellhop has the other money.

subtract 5 from the 27

so it costs $22 right? then they give 2 dollars to the kid unknowingly, making it cost $24

24 plus the 3 bucks they get is 27

easy

actually the bell hop stuck the other dollar in his ass, she left that part out...

can you add and subtract?

yeah that's pretty easy. they paid $27 for the room, the boy gave them $3 so that's only $24 for the room, and he kept $2 for himself. it makes sense but the riddle is worded to make it sound impossible. really gay actually.

no your wrong. you start off with a 1/3 chance of success because there are three doors to begin with so your first guess is probably wrong. then, when your told that another door has nothing, you should switch because you know that the one door is wrong and that you are probably wrong with your guess. therefore the other door is probably correct

ya iv'e heard this before and i messed with my head

aww i need a cool signature so i can be cool so ever one will like me if i had a cool signature then if i like saw some chicks from ns they would be like hey theres the kidd with the cool signature let give him a blow job and it would be like the hotest chick on ns hey this is kinda starting to look like a signature dang well i geuss i have a cool signature makeing this signature usless becacase u have a cool signature but if i delete in then i wont so i would need it think about that one almost filled now

for the game show problem, this is the best way to explain it i think: imagine there are 1 million doors, and you pick one. the host then eliminates all but two (the one you originally chose and then another). It is then of course better to switch your choice to the other remaining door, rather than stay with the door you originally picked. that might help

Ummm, well I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that no one has explained it, because it is unexplainable, while if anyone did, it was probably Quinny.

Either way makes sense, and why do some of you feel oh soo incredible because you feel you are the only ones that can add or subtract? It's quite obvious that 27-2-3 is 22. However, that isn't the weird thing. What is weird is that somewhere in there that dollar is actually getting lost if you do it the other way.

5 -2 =3 , 3/3 = 1, so they each got a refund of a dollar no? 9 - 1 =8, 8 *3 =24 , 24 +2 =26. Now there is nothing wrong here, except that you get 26.

I have seen a question like this before. Also, some of you may have seen that area one before. The one where there is a large triangle of a certain area, that is made up of smaller shapes. Now these shapes are taken out and rearranged inside this triangle that stays constant, yet, suddendly, and none of the areas of the smaller shapes has changed, the shapes don't make up the area of the triangle anymore. That's fucked. This may be hard to visualize what I'm saying, but it isn't really explainable.

Thus, I feel that this question is just like that.

umm the triangle one is an optical illusion

you add small amouts of area on the edges and when added up you get a "missing peice"

he came out with poop alll over his face. goddamnit. he said something about bobbing for shit dumplings or something - midwest_rep

Chemical ski, i don't think it is. It was done (when I seen it) on a grid pattern and the two had the same dimensions. I think we even measured it.

Oops, upon further inspection, you are actually right. It isn't so much an optical illusion as it is slight deviances in the gradient of the hypotenuese. The shapes inside really don't change area. It still is quite interesting.

Go to the first link first. And no, I don't care if you are too lazy to copy paste.

Regardless, this doesn't change the fact that something appears to be strange with the original question, and despite some efforts hasn't been explained.
