FIFA World Cup is coming up, who are you rooting for?!

admit what? i am pissed not because you don't want them to win but because you are disrespecting a team that i like and want to win.

idk where the admit it came from sorry. but i was confused bout how you were getting pissed that i disrespected a team when you were disrespecting the teams i wanted to see play. sorta hypocritical. and i want to see the u.s. play well by all means, i didnt know there was more than one channel devoted to the cup and didnt want other games to not be aired because u.s. was playing.

no not hypocritical. i never disrespected france or germany. all i said is that the US is ranked higher than them. and that my friend is a fact.

beloved germany vs france game.

i see what you mean by didnt disrespect the teams. you disrespected me. i challenge you to a duel!

Ok I didnt follow US to wc so tell me how they did and I will come back at the point that usa is bad. But plz dont take the fifa ranking serious... Coz it says so little (I say this based on experience). It is also unfair to teams that were in a harder pool then other wo could win easily coz they only played bad teams.

But plz dont go all like USA is the best soccer country and stuff coz how many americans are playing at big clubs?

i want to see iraq (or some other middleeast team) lose the final to america...

...just imagine the conicuences(sp?). normal socer roits will be nothing on comperison

FUCK USA....its all about the European Teams....no way in hell will the US win....you guys fail to realize that the majority of the pros in europe have been playing soccer since they could walk...and grew up playing in no shoes on the street...there for having INSANE skills...they als(italy, brazil, etc) see soccer as a way of life...its night and day comparison to the us....

but i am voting for italia all the way...(then holland, brazilia, etc)

most of the US team is playing in division one leagues in europe either D2 or MLS (yeah, the MLS isnt great but its growing in polularity and skill very fast), ... i think they have a chance to do really well even though their group is tough- im worried that if they dont do well, all of the hype from their high FIFA ranking will cause non-soccer fans watching ESPN to bitch about how much they still think soccer sucks and how bad the US is

I want the USA to win so that people like you will stop insisting that Europe is God's gift to the sport of soccer. The US is ranked 5th by FIFA (http://www.fifa.com/en/mens/statistics/index/0,2548,All-May-2006,00.html), behind 2 European teams. You fail to realize that "pros in europe" aren't all from European countries; an ever increasing amount of players are brought in from other continents.

You fail to realize that professionals from the US, and every other nationality, have been playing soccer since they were small children (how the hell do you play soccer if you can't walk?).

I don't think that any European teams will do very well. I think Brazil is going to walk all over everyone they play. The traditional European contenders are all in poor form this year (France 8, England 10, Italy 13, Germany 19). The Czech Republic (highest ranked team in Europe) is in the toughest group and has a decent chance of not even making the second round.

I would love to see someone who hasn't won a cup yet (not Brazil, Italy, Germany, Uruguay, Argentina, England, France) go all the way.

valid point, but mls will never come close to european soccer becuase of our fan base. most americans would rather watch baseball or basketball becasue you dont need to have played/really understand those sports to watch them and feel a part of it. (yes if you really understand baseball its better, but a lot of people just follow stats and dont know how much goes into the game which is why americans dont watch sports like hockey and soccer which you need to have a better understanding of in order to appreciate)

you might wanna think about how these rankings are made. points are given for offical matches only. since germany is the host they played only frienly games instead of playing in the qualification, thus having no chance to get some points. so in my oppinion these rankings are bs. and look against which opponenst the us played their last games, not too many top notch teams.

American sport are so much more difficult to understand than soccer... The only hard rule is offside and that knows almost everyone including my dad and female friends.

And 2nd that fifa ranking is total nonsense! If u got ur info about soccer from fifa ranking than u know nothin from soccer. I bet u it will end up completely different!

oyeah and europeans dont play soccer with no shoes... We also have jobs electricity and yess we also have shoes. Maybe maybe in some very very poor areas u can find children playing with no shoes...

Maybe you ought to check. The following types of games are considered:

* World Cup finals matches

* World Cup preliminary matches

* FIFA Confederations Cup matches

* Continental championship final matches

* Continental championship preliminary matches

* Friendly matches

I agree with you, though, that rankings can be deceiving (and that US, among others, is ranked far too high by FIFA- the Elo system is generally much more accurate). The point was that Europe doesn't complete dominate the sport- after all, South America has won 9 World Cups compared to Europe's 8.

It's not that the rules are more complex, it's that the strategies and gameplay involved are more complex. More thought goes into trying to move a ball past the opposing team than to hit a ball and run around the bases.

And the point that FIFA rankings is noted; any idiot can tell that the rankings aren't the end all authority (else there'd be no point of even playing). However rankings should be considered as a track record. If I make the assertion that the US is a good team, I'd be an idiot not to back it up with some statistics, no?

The points given are weighted to reflect the importance of the matches though, friendlies are worth a lot less than WC

qualifiers.

They're also weighted in relation to the quality of the opponents played and the region they're played in, so the U.S. didn't get their points unfairly.

In some senses Europe really does dominate football, almost all the richest teams are in Europe and most of the worlds best players play in our leagues. But South America (well, just brazil really) owns the game at a national level.

Exactly. I should have made that distinction.

There is no doubt that European leagues are far better than any other leagues. I don't think, however, that European national teams are better than the rest of the world. I think that the hype surrounding them is mainly the product of people believing that they have the best leagues so they have the best national teams and that a very large portion of soccer fans are from Europe, so they "root for the home team".

That's why I want a team that hasn't won it (and even preferably not from South America or Europe) to go all the way- so that people will realize how global soccer talent really is.

Well baseball is easy but what about american football and basketball? I wont consider these sports as easy to understand.

But I cant wait to see USA in the World cup, Im a big fan of beasley (PSV Eindhoven my club), so lets hope for some nice matches with some real football!

you've forgotten about the dutch. we're ranked third and have a very good chance at getting into the next round.

oh, and i think ghana's pretty much screwed.

clearly... otherwise there would be no point to watching... it would be like picking an NCAA bracket with all #1 seeds in the final four- for this reason i think it will be fun to cheer for the USA because soccer is finally growing in the US beyond being a sport that everyone played when they were really young

even though they are ranked really high for some reason (their only big win EVER was vs portugal in last WC) they are still an underdog and fun to cheer for

i'm surprised no one has said brazil cause those guy's are crazy.. same with italy... well seeing as i dont really know soccer teams all that well, i'll just root for teams i have heard of, like England, Brazil, or Italy

they won the CONCACAF, including beating mexico, and nearly beating them in mexico where it is so hard to play.......(imagine the thin air in the rockies plus 90 degree heat). yes the fifa rankings are skewed there is no doubt, but the U.S. is a good team with just as much talent as many of the "powerhouses"

on top of that, Spain and the USA. like to see soccer become huge in the US, and winning a cup would be huge for the growth of the sport here.

i hope korea does well again. other than that spain is my team. italy is ok in my books otherwise i usualy root for the underdogs
