Festival talk

fuuuucccckkkk this is the third year in a row just about every friend i know has gone to Sham and i've missed it. next year is my year though....so stoked to get those international travel privileges back! haha

PL definitely is a surprise favorite, you'd be hard pressed to find me there with a lineup as stacked as this was but he definitely knows how to pick tracks to fit the crowd. did you happen to catch Bleep Bloop or G Jones? so many of my friends raving about those sets. also how can you bash on Tipper?!

and GHB just gets an awful rep because people are abusing the shit out of it in the entirely wrong context. (plus the whole date-rape thing) when used intelligently after a night of heavy partying it's the perfect way to easy your way back in to normalcy. not to mention you sleep like a gawd damn ROCK which can be pretty clutch if you're sleeping in a poorly set up tent at a music festival...

Yeah I checked out G Jones and Bleep Bloop. It was Thursday night though they only have two stages open and they are way too busy so I listened from afar. I'm getting too old to squeeze my way into a crowd that, once you're in there have no room to dance. Combine that with it being night 1 of 4 and I had no interest in going hard in any way.

Tipper did two sets at two different stages, both stages have some of the best sound systems in the world, but Tipper almost demanded them to get a completely different system (at Shambhala's cost) for his sets. The Grove already had to rent a projector that cost something ridiculous like $5000 for a 1 hour set - and for him to almost force them to get and set up a completely different sound system just for his set(s). I don't care who the fuck you are, that kind of shit doesn't fly.

And I don't think you can say "intelligently" and GHB in the same sentence. I kinda get what you are saying, I have used K to help me calm down and get into sleeping mode sometimes while going really hard, but GHB is even more finicky than K and can become very very dangerous when mixed with alcohol. I've seen G take down my most seasoned of drug using friends.

The Function 1s in the groove were so sick looking/sounding though.

Sound was muddled at pagoda this year, bass was loud but not crisp. Village and fractal had excellent balance for me.

interesting....hadn't heard any of that about Tipper it doesn't really surprise me though. can't imagine what he wanted instead of the Funktion 1s.

and each to their own i suppose. it's a substance that i'm decently well-read on, is easy to obtain, and in low doses does EXACTLY what i'm after. no i don't slam 7 beers mid-day and then eat a teener of G to get more spun. and honestly anyone getting loaded on GHB like that at a festival probably has a whole lot more in their system to worry about. i've never really understood how anyone does opis/barbs/downers festivals to begin with.

mad late but I went to osheaga on my 18th, saw bunch of sick acts and generally had a good time but the vibe was weird as fuck, met some homies but mostly wasn't my speed. Ended up selling our tickets after Friday and took the money to the montreal bars saturday and sunday.

hard to even put my finger on what it was, the music was awesome just wasnt feeling the whole thing way too crowded and mostly the crowds were real basic

wow I should've bought magnaball tix when I had the chance. now possibly looking for 2 tix for around 300 or less each

Damn.. Good luck man! I would have never thought they would sell out. What number did they stop at do you know? I am escpecially surprised since this happened at one time:

The Summer Jam at Watkins Glen was a 1973 rock festival which once received the Guinness Book of World Records entry for "Largest audience at a pop festival." An estimated 600,000 rock fans came to the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Raceway outside of Watkins Glen, New York on July 28, 1973, to see the Allman Brothers Band, Grateful Dead and The Band perform.

I would have guessed there would have been a huggeeeeee capacity there

I won Saturday tickets to Mazzfest, a small festival in 2 weeks in Marlboro, NY (Hudson Valley). Consider the Source is headlining that night. Should be fun. Camping overnight with Louie

think they cut it at 30K? they definitely have the capacity for more but I guess it was decide that 30 was enough?

If you get there people are getting in with cash.

I should be there now but my fucking stickers got delayed

forreal? my buddy and I wouldn't be able to get there until tomorrow so I don't know if we could risk going without tix

I would say go for it and hope for the best. Also were putting a bunch of the ticketless to work today to park cars, work in sweat shops etc.

Idk, I feel like it's worth it to try because they're ON FIRE right now. Best tour since they've been back imo.

anybody able to buy me a ticket and i'll paypal or venmo you??? desperately looking for a ticket and hoping to drive up tomorrow

another day trying to decide if I should go to an event solo. anyone gonna be there? I'd be at the water stage all day but I know shpongle is a pretty big name

Almost sold out of these. Would have if I had all of mine on me the last night. Some people posted them online and they started selling really well.

Also was bummed that I didn't get to play with many friends over the weekend but so stoked to find out my friends who I was trying to meet up with the most, jammed with gordo.

If you want to go somewhere, just go. You will meet people there.

Boom, do it

Getting my ticket for nightmare fest tomorrow and I'm stoked, it's held by the same people who put on big dub and I've never been to either but I know everyone loves them both. Always excited to go to a new festival but the reviews coupled by the fact it's on motherfucking Halloween, my favorite holiday, I'm pretty sure this is going to be the equivalent of dying and going to festie heaven.

yea I know man... I've given pretty much the same advice (maybe even in this thread), but cruising solo gets tiring after a while. at least for me it does. not so much during a show/party when the music is playing, but it's those before, after and in-between moments when it's just nice to have someone with you.

I tend to just get in the zone dancing the whole time and never talk to anyone which is good and bad I guess

so NBD the Phish Mexico run just happens to also be in playa del carmen during the closing weekend of BPM festival.

days of partying on the beach with some of the best dj's straight into 3 days of Phish on the beach is what (my) dreams are made of

for those of you who have seen rjd2 live...how is he?

I've known about him for ages thanks to NS and he's coming to a local music fest next weekend. I'm pumped to see him, just wanna know a little bit about how his sets are. Also amped to see jimkata again. Gonna jaammmm out when their set comes up.

RJD2 is the only DJ who doesn't play with live instruments who I actually enjoy seeing live (asside from OTT/Shpongle of course). He plays with between 4-6 record tables and live mixes actual records. Most shows he will play until he literally runs out of records to mix. I saw him once when he had some technical difficulties getting his sound right (two of his 4 DJ tables weren't working), so he appologized to the audience and hopped down into the crowd to hang out with them while his techs fixed the issue. Then he hopped back on stage and slayed the second half of his time slot.

whoa just saw the prices. at 1350 for the cheapest option I don't think that's doable for me haha.

went to brooklyn yesterday and caught the end of David August's live set -> dj koze - > dj tennis - > maceo plex. Super stacked lineup for the type of stuff I like. Also had a cool view but for some reason I wasn't feeling the vibe as much as usual. I think I just prefer dark clubs now

Probably doing lockn this weekend and chill. That's about it for my summer festivals. Want to get into the shop and weld some rails/ take a break from traveling for a bit.

I would skip lockn probably if it wasn't for steve earle and the dukes. On my list of things I've wanted to see and never got the chance. Obviously cheese and panic and umph and phil and friends and stuff are great but steve earle and fishbone are my main reasons for going.

Catskill chill is always good. Haven't been in a few years but ready to make my return

Quotes from an article interviewing Chuck from moe. in reference to headling Catskill Chill this weekend:

"Playing a festival like Catskill Chill, where a lot of the people will probably know our music, we can go deeper into our catalog and pull out something a bit different or more ambitious," he divulges. "I remember talking [with the band] about unearthing some of our older songs we haven’t played in a while that haven’t been done yet." Garvey also notes moe. recently "dusted off a cover or two" that might find their way into the upcoming performance.

Garvey also reveals the guys may be inviting some of the other acts on the bill to share the stage with them for a song or two. "If there are some friends of ours that are going to be there the day we’re performing, anything can happen," he reveals.

Article is Moe.'s Chuck Garvey Reveals Details Of 'Ambitious' Set For Catskill Chill -http://liveforlivemusic.com/feature...-details-of-ambitious-set-for-catskill-chill/

This article made me too excited not to share!

Thinking about going to Pilgrimage in Tennessee. It's an 8 hour drive, but it looks like it would be a good time.

like my tees? hunter thompson "just admiring the shape of your skull" stealies.

Decadence NYE in Phoenix December 30/31. Lineup right now is Jack U, ODESZA, Pretty Lights, Adventure Club and Borgore with more to be announced

I entered into the contest for the free Dead and Co tix at MSG. They are giving away 10k tickets since they added a free show after selling out the other shows. So many people probably entered but giving away 5k pairs seems like an actual chance at getting tix.

On me and benedetto's radar for shows is the moe. in Port Chester on 11/13 and dopapod in Woodstock at the Bearsville Theatre on 11/14. We're going to at least one of those shows if not both. I really want to check out the Bearsville Theatre because it used to be an old barn and it looks awesome..

So many shows going on for New Years it is hard to choose. moe. in Albany is a solid choice but I am waiting to see if any other bands announce any events.

Ooohh did not know about this thanks for the heads up. I'll check out tix and maybe I'll end up there on Friday.

also entered for those tix so I'll keep my fingers crossed for both of us. just looked at some photos of Bearsville Theatre and it does look really cool.

agreed there's always a lot going on around New Years. I'm definitely trying to do phish one night but might not be NYE cause that's gonna be $200+ most likely

Anyone that lives in New York

Lespecial is throwing their annual Halloween event called "Lespectacle" in Brooklyn tomorrow night. If anyone has been looking for an opportunity to see lespecial tomorrow is it.

me and benedetto were considering this but we're going to go see some comedy instead. Also, so many upcoming shows I couldn't afford to go to brooklyn. But this has been on my radar since it was announced this year.
