Festival talk

bummed cause it looks like i'll be going solo to time warp. still should be insane though and I dance by myself anyway

Just saw gathering of the vibes released a TON of videos today... here's one from the Lotus Talking Heads set

That was one of the best sets I've ever seen. Videos like this make me miss festie season.

Check out gary clark jr. HE was at moe.down 4 years ago. Good shit. Was bummed that when I streamed the xgames in austin there was nobody at his set. Maybe 50 people at most. Of course there were a billion people at pretty lights and other sets. Made me sad.

Pretty solid lineup. I've always wanted to see j5.

J5 is great live, only saw them once though

I should have at rock the bells in 2007 I think. Wu tang, tribe, de la soul, rage, and other on the lineup that year I think. Considering how much music I've seen it kills me that I haven't seen half those acts.

That said hip hop doesn't end up at that many fests. Someday, someday.

Probably no one who cares about this, but Time Warp was pretty awesome. Last night was definitely the better of the two IMO, with Sven Vath as a big highlight. Went over to the second stage a few times to catch some of Josh Wink/DJ Tennis/Dixon who all sounded good.

There were some hiccups and what not but overall I had a fun time. "The Cave" stage design was wild and lights were on point. Hopefully they'll bring it back again next year and learn from this one to make it even better

I was actually wondering how it went

Cool haha I was hoping someone would be interested.

Like I said, no major complaints. I could see how people who payed over $200 might be a little disappointed, but for the $125 I payed I think I got my money's worth. Sven's set alone was almost worth the price haha.

I went alone which kinda sucks, but there were really good vibes and a lot of good dancing. Mature crowd all around

So, what festivals are everybody planning for next year? For me Myseryland, moe.down and Catskill Chill are always a definite. I would add The Hudson Project as a definite as well but I need to see the line-up first. I am thinking Gathering of the Vibes too. I went on sunday last year and it was a blast and the vibes were awesome. If that line-up is amazing again I will be there. I will also be open to going to smaller festies as they pop up...

For Myseryland: Presale starts tomorrow for mastercard holders and the 4th for everybody. I can not wait!!

I'm waiting for lineups but I plan on doing 7-9 or so Eastern Summer Phish tour dates.

Anyone see what Lockn has for 2015 yet? Already really promising and there are some crazy rumors about it.

Maybe vibes, maybe THP, maybe bisco if it exists

yes! WOOP WOOP

Also possibly doing the whole moe. winter tour. Possibly skipping a couple to do the biscuits efactory shows. Probably doing one of the small fests in NY, then summercamp>waka possibly. Maybe a phish show or two before getting the hell out of 'Murica. Hoping for 3 night spac run at the beginning. Hoping for the summer terr to start in June as well. I'll be able to hit way more stuff if the terr starts like june 7th or something.

How does one do a whole tour? Is it saved up money or do you just volunteer at every show or something?

I plan on doing Phish tour this Summer by working pretty much every day that isn't a tour travel day and traveling on the cheap (carpooling, sleeping in Walmart lots, etc...)

Still getting flashes of the weekend when I close my eyes. Here are clips from 2 of my favorite sets all weekend

Papa Sven playing Deep Down by Dast

Dixon playing Roman Flugel's remix of Idle Eyes

If anyones feeling frendly they should send it on over to the Frendly Gathering in Timber ridge VT! Its usually the last weekend of June and it was definitely the highlight of my summer. Great festival with a great vibe and its on an old ski hill dammit how cool is that?

How many of you guys do molly and whatnot at these festivals? I have a few friends who have gotten really into that and it sketches me out. I usually just smoke and/or drink a bit while I'm there, I don't get the reasoning behind getting ridiculously fucked up to the point where you can't really remember the show.

well, molly is such a broad term nowadays. If you're on pure mdma you would remember the show... Actually it would probably be one of the best days of your life. However, some people do not care if it is real, they just want some sort of upper. I shy away from partaking now a days since i've seen people thinking they're getting good shit, and wind up cracked out til 8 am. I also just drink and smoke. I am usually the first one asleep from drinking too much and no uppers. If I had a test kit and found pure shizzz it would make my night. I don't even bother buying a kit because the chance of it being pure is slim..

Just bought my vibes ticket on Black Friday, already excited for that. Trying to hit waka, bisco, Hudson, wormtown, an frendly gathering money and schedule permitting.

I am happy ya said Hudson. I thought it left a sour taste in your mouth. I may be getting confused though since so many haters on FB. I for one hope the lineup is sick again and I will be there to rage

I loved Hudson! Like yeah it was so terribly put together and none of the people who worked there knew anything about anything, but the line up was great, it was relatively inexpensive, and the people there were really awesome.

I'm still a little bitter about being in line to get on the bus to the venue for over 7 hours, seeing multiple water mocs by my tent and then being told to "just stay away from them because we don't have a whole lot of anti-venom," and then being stuck there Sunday night because the bridge flooded. Those are all problems that I'm hoping they'll think about a little more for next year but overall, I had an amazing time there.

I hope I'll be able to get some friends to go to Life in Color in Miami, it looks like so much fun.

Not a festival but I love this thread for posting shows as well... I am going to skip the moe. new years in Albany since we're doing the 3 night run in nyc in march. I am going to hit up Jimkata in Ithaca instead and do some exploring. We saw them in nyc saturday night and they are awesome live. Definitely check them out anybody into electronic jam bands...

It's not that hard. Knowing people is crucial. So being friendly at shows and meeting people is always good. You could crush it on grilled cheese, beer, jello shots, water on summer terrr. moe. is hard with no lot seen but some pins here and there, some money saved, some couches, not too bad.

Idk, when you go to too many shows it get's kind of easy. My biggest thing now is time. Would have finally done my first whole summer phish terr but then I left. And then they crushed it.

13246774:Zimmerman said:

Sling some waters man. I crashed with friends at their hotel all weekend, didn't throw in for parking that, or the jello shots in chicago. (I think I brought my own beer but might have snagged some of them too)

Sold some jello shots for them. Not sure how much I made him with those but after the show the 2nd or 3rd night I made 127 I think in a half hour or so. Was epic because security tried to take my cooler and had to tell them to fuck off, brought it to the car, and was running back and forth with my hoodie full of water. Ice cold hands but people were thirsty.

The down side with that is you can't depend on it. You can generally always make a few bucks to offset the cost. ESPECIALLY if you're slinging them in the day as well. But sometimes after the show there will be 10+ people next to each other selling water. There are lots of people, but you're not going to crush it always. Sometimes there's almost nobody as well.

If you do it during the day by shakedown then move in front of the venue an hour before show time, then get out during encore and set up again you'll do pretty well generally.

Venues that allow you to bring a sealed water bottle in are the best. Make sure to look up the venue policies and let people.

Be vocal. It doesn't really matter what you're saying as long as it keeps you from killing yourself, and entertains people. I was slinging cigrittts as "Ice cold cancer!" and "Bunk cigarettes! Bunkest on lot! All the cancer none of the buzz!"

Some guy at super ball was like "bunk cigritsss? Hey buddy you aren't gonna sell any like that" Lol. Dude was an idiot and didn't understand marketing 101. Crushed it. I think people that didn't even smoke were buying them just because they wanted to waste all their hard earned money on my phony ass cigrritss.

Also it was a million times more fun yelling stuff like that than saying "waters" or "cigrritts" for 10 hours.

Also sometimes I change accents throughout the day. I'll get my southern on,maybe a little latin accent, etc.

Also for phish figure out the show and how it's sold where you're trying to get a ticket for. If you're cool with lawn all summer unless it's cheap you can do it easy. Get a budget like $40 for this show and then look for a cheaper ticket. If somebody is selling 1 it's cool to offer them less but don't be a douche just because you're trying to get it for $20 and they're trying to get $40. (fucking wooks do that shit)

Idk. If I make it to new years I'll have pulled off a pretty epic amount of shows for how little I've been in the country while they were touring. Got shut out of great woods but other than that did everything else I was here for(which wasn't that much.

IF you play an instrument that's always good. There's a guy that's been playing the sax after shows on phish tour for a while. Anything to keep the gas money coming in.

Be careful with beer. If they're going after anything they'll be going after that. Some girl had a giant cooler full of heady topper at spac. I advised her to chuck all but maybe 6-8 in another cooler in her car in case her cooler got snagged. People were having to dump coolers with 100-s of jello shots in the dumpster and shit like that. Jello shots are good because even if you don't sell em all you can make your money back, get drunk enough to do something stupid, and make a bunch of people happy with some freebies. Also barter for food and other goods.

I'll shut the hell up now.

Festival announcements are rolling in! This sweetens the deal for Mountain Jam for sure! (at least thursday day ticket)

Is this a sign about the faith of a moe.down in 2015?

MJ is a possibility, however when more line ups roll out, quickly trumped. I know it only represents a small number of attendees and online comments should hardly be taken seriously but mountain jam fans are bitter and it's pretty brutal. THP will probably be similar though for totally different reasons but I like the direction the mj line up is going and looking forward to more line ups.

Yup

What about moe.down? Are you talking radius clauses kind of deal? OR that moe.down won't happen? Or about the lineup?

moe.down will definitely happen. The lineup won't be released till a week before but that's how it always is. moe. is the worst in terms of getting things out quickly. It's all family working the .org for the most part but damn it's pretty terrible sometime.

Also interested and might go but really over mtn jam. Went once a few years ago. IT's alright but that location blows. Actually had the best campsite party I've ever had/seen at a festival at mtn jam but still. The situation at the gate and the location in general is shady imo. Rough on them good vibes.

I'm almost certainly going to Luminosity, and really stoked. Anybody have recommendations for other music festivals in Europe (Austria, specifically, as that's where I'll be this spring) that they recommend?

"Festival talk" = talk about jam bands that are old and washed up

Lol sure bro. The music festival scene was really all out of that vibe bro. Even bonnaroo started as a jamband festival with some other stuff mixed in. It later ditched jambands for bro tunes but that's not the point.

Basically the festival scene whether it be the bro fests or the womp fests wouldn't really exist at least not in the way that it does if it wasn't for jambands.

Thank god for there being so many now. I can now avoid the kinds of things you and your friends would go to, see skrillex or whoever and spend all your money on fake molly to put up your butthole

;)

God it feels nice to throw down a rant once in a while.

Haha good this thread was getting boring, almost as boring as a moe. set.

TBH I kinda prefer shows to festivals, and I think that this crazy rise of festivals in the last decades have drowned out summer individual shows like crazy. Bands don't come to my hometown except for the two major festivals in the summer, which kills the local scene and the bars in town.

Don't get me wrong, festivals are mad fun every once in awhile, but I get tired of that atmosphere pretty quickly and want to see full sets from my favourite bands, not 30 minute fest hit sets.

For the record I don't run around sticking acid up my butt or taking my shirt off for major lazer, I just miss seeing my favourite rock and punk bands coming to town and playing smaller venues. Yes I like new rock/punk/indie/no wave bands, and these bands deserve spots that jam bands swamp up.

Would you rather a cool band played every week in your town over the summer or instead all those bands came in 3 days?

The whole indie scene really went to shit. Not as bad as the pseudo folk scene. Lets wear old clothes and insert a really really horrifically shitty banjo line. Honestly pretty much all of the the good music out there today is coming through festivals so I don't understand your complaint on bands not getting slots. Even the shitty bands that are popular are at festivals.

The idea of jambands "swamping up" all the slots from the indie bands is lollerblades though. Probably the funniest thing I've read today.

That's how it is every fest though. There are a few slots for the indie bands but then some asshole is like "Let's flood these spots with jambands just to fuck with every one".

Also as far as the hate on jambands. The percentage of non jambands switching up their setlist every night really isn't that high.

With some of those bands it's like "Hey let's go see that band that I only know that one song that I heard on the radio and when I get there they won't even play it well because they're barely musicians" I love stuff like that.

Like the 15 minutes of MGMT I saw at bonnaroo in 2009. It was painful. Luckily nine inch nails and ben harper relentless 7 were also playing so it wasn't hard to find something to do.

I mean I guess at least you're not whining that there needs to be 6 more dj's at every festival. I think I was offering $200 at waka to anyone who could shut the main stage down while girl talk was on. Mixing some kelly clarkson and something else in a field where you couldn't escape the music. The one time I was pissed that I COULD here the music from the campground.

Actually on the indie band radio thing. Dispatch at bonnaroo was like that. I actually dig some of their stuff. But people were talking in clusters the whole show, not even looking at the stage. Then they started singing the general and suddenly dispatch was everyones favorite bands. drinks were spilled, babies were trampled as everyone ceased talking and began running or dancing toward the stage while singing like it was their favorite song in the world. I was just sitting therein the grass watching them like a migration of retarded caribou or something.

Also same year met some of the "You're not in my carpool why are you talking to me" type bros there as well. God forbid somebody says something to a stranger at a music fest.

But yeah, bring on them indie bands and radio rock. The jambands are old.

Maybe the local music scene is dying because everyone would rather drink shitty beers in a room playing zeds dead on their iphone curb stomping around as yelling "OMG I LOVE HOW HEAVY IT DROPS IN THIS SONG BROUUUUUUUUU" than go see musicians performing in a local venue.

Besides, who has money to spend on shows when you spend it all on light up binky's absurd amounts or cheesy as fuck " look what we made in preschool today" bracelets, neon shirts that say molly, some fake droogz to boof, and maybe even a "concert" ticket like a $150 scalped pretty lights ticket so they can show off all their neon accessories. Then again at least the brouuuuuus in the room blasting womp didn't have to buy a ticket and could afford extra neon accessories and low budget alcohol.

#YOLO

Missed the ending of that.

Oh god the music didn't come to my doorstep what do I do!!!

Start promoting shows. Maybe there's no market for the bands you like and that's why they don't play. Maybe you're lucky they play at all with the fests. Maybe they don't like you and want you to suffer.

Also at the places that have a good mix of music people go and see the shitty stuff. Gary Clark jr. at Xgames had maybe 30 people in the crowd if even at a huge stage. Pretty lights? Packed, trample people territory with enough neon bullshit electronic to power the whole country for a year. Good choice people.

Also shitty moe. and their lame festival had him there in 2010. Also had the black keys before they blew up. But yeah, all the spots just go to jambands.

I think you just suck at music.

not really a festival, but i got to see billy idol, interpol, two vance joy songs, alt-j and cage the elephant.

cage live was fucking mind blowing, seriously the greatest set i've ever seen. also helps that i was front row and bear hugged brad shultz /claim.

if you have the chance to see cte live, jump all over that

Those "washed up" bands can play circles around pretty much every other live act.

Also, Rusty: Don't let an MGMT performance from that era keep you away. From 2009-2012 they absolutely sucked live. They're a lot more comfortable with their material now and can play a really awesome show when they feel like it. There's even a couple minute jam in Kids now, lol. I guess it may just not be your style of music, but their repertoire is actually really deep/psychedelia ridden, especially that new album. They're confident now unlike in 2010 and shit when they literally thought their own music was a joke, and played it that way too...if they're at a fest you're at again I'd encourage giving them a second chance.

Do they ever have testing stations in festivals in the US? At Sonar in Barcelona as soon as you get in there is a free testing booth where they will tell you what you have in 5 minutes, and how pure it is in an hour.
