Festival talk

Never been to Squamish festival but if you like electronic at all and love good vibes, switch Squamish for shambhala (assuming they are at the same time again).

, coachella, Sasquatch, pemberton, shambhala would make for a killer summer. If you could throw a trip to black rock city in there as well it'd be one for the books.

Good call man. I actually might do that, main reason I considered squamish was so I could get some kiting in. But shamb had always looked like a unique festival to me, so might have to do it.

Just finished my last festival of the year last weekend. Here's what i got hit up this year

1. Virginia Key Grassroots Music Festival of Music, Art, and Dance

2. Modest Mouse at Brewery Ommegang (not really a festival however with the camping and fireworks and everything this venue has it definitely had the same feeling as a weekend long fest)

Anyone else going to Catskill Chill? Louie and I are headed after work. Going to be a funky weekend. Great line up

Catskill Chill was amazing! Definitely going to be annual visit! It was so professionally ran and the vibes were awesome... The lineup was stacked as well. I didn't hear one negative thing all weekend! If you live anywhere near NY make sure you go next year.

Yup, chill was amazing. Great layout, great music, great vibes. A must annual festival. On the cheap side too. Loved everything about it.

I haven't done the last 2 chills. Hopefully it's still chill when I get to go again. MAybe EDM will be dead by then and the womp will be gone. Still a lot of good bands on that lineup. Crazy how fast that fest blew up. They could be doing 7-10k if they wanted to. Glad their keeping it capped at 5 though.

Also either moe. or phish miami for me.

Aura fest in march is going to be a rager. I need to get a fest in my life

Yup Aura is stacked! It's be hard to justify that expenditure during ski season though.

I don't mind a little Womp but there wasn't too much of it at Chill. It was beyond . It gives me the warm and fuzzies just thinking about it. The setup was awesome. moe. on the 27th is next for us. Oh yeah and Albany for lark fest this weekend to day drink.

Word, yeah it isn't too bad. IT was a lot quiter and more mellow the first year Still raging, late night slots were like 3-5:30/6am, pets played one night, umelt played the other. Then the whomp scene started to get pretty big the next to years and there was dubstep blasting in cabins and shit. I mean great festival but I could do without that and the dubstep ice cream truck. But when that's all you can complaun about that means the fest is pretty solid. They did everything right from the start and blew up because of it.

And I won't be at anything till cheese. Got tickets for ithica>burly. Obviously doing phish moe. vegas if I stumble on some tickets but that's not gonna happen.

Anyone doing city bisco? That was a good time in 2012. Don't stay at the north american motor inn. OR do, probably the best hotel to come out with a good story.

Not a festival, but I just saw Rise Against in Oakland at the Fox Theater and it was by far the best concert I've been to. They sound identical, if not better, than their album sound. And the venue was big but intimate enough that on the floor we were always at most 20ft away. Great energy. Super stoked off of it.

some moe. this weekend in Bridgeport, CT... anybody else? Or anybody have been to the Klein/this area? Any recommendations for pregaming or bar to hit afterwards?

Nah but I know a bunch of people going. I would say don't pregame at a bar in Bridgeport honestly. Unless there are a bunch of moe.rons going right before the show. FInd something as close to the venue as possible so you don't have to walk around.

Bridgeport is a shithole, be safe.

Alright looking for a bit of advice here...

I've never been to a festival in the US and am not really familiar with the scene at all, but all of the festivals I've been to in other countries have been the best times I've ever had.

Next summer I want to just go festival to festival. Has anyone done this? The plan is sort of to buy a camper-van for transport/sleeping and hit as many as possible. Obviously financially it isn't very viable but I think it wouldn't be too hard if we were able to get free tickets for all the festivals. Does anyone know about cleaning up after the fests or getting in on entertainer tickets? Is there any other way to get free tickets to festivals that people know of?

The other options I were thinking about were working at like a bar or on security crew or something...Anyone have any idea if those people travel from fest to fest or is it all different?

The last option I was thinking about is making and selling a whole bunch of tie dye...Anyone have an idea on how expensive it is to get a booth for selling retail goods at festivals, or other ideas for things we could sell other than tie dye?

Any help is greatly appreciated...I don't even know where to start really.

Saw Bassnectar for the first time yesterday. Not a big edm guy but this was something else. One of the coolest experiences ever

abortionator can help more but I recommend following festival facebook's and get on their email list. Most, if not all festivals have options to volunteer and you get to attend for free. Which I think works like you gotta buy the ticket up front and they'll pay you back. The volunteering is most always promoted on social media. Some of the spots fill up quick and some they are advertising volunteering up until the last week.

What type of music are you into?

I'm into all sorts of music. Favorite band is Caravan Palace and electro swing is my favorite genre too, but I don't' think its very big over here so that isn't really anything to go off of. I guess I just want the most variety, I have nothing against EDM so my options are pretty much completely open. Are there any good sites anyone knows about that just have a calendar with festivals on it I could check out?

threads. some good stuff coming up soon in the nyc area including Lettuce on halloween and Time Warp's first US appearance on thanksgiving weekend

we'll be heading to NYC saturday 12/6 to see Jimkata at the knitting factory.. Awesome band I haven't got to check out yet. I recommend checking them out! I recently got into archive.org and their shows sound great.

cool, I'll definitely keep it in mind. haven't listened to them at all but I'll check out some stuff

I am about to buy the moe. tickets for their 3-show run in NYC in March. So stoked! The venue they're playing on that thursday only fits 700 standing. I can't wait to see them in an intimate setting!

My birthday is on the 13th so I'm gonna try and get some friends to go. Missed them on long island in September so I really wanna go. I prob wouldn't do all three nights but le poisson rouge should be sick for sure. I'm glad they're at Best Buy Theater too cause I like that place I've seen a few good shows there

I haven't seen anything but that would be sick. I am pretty sure the Hudson Project had a 5 year deal so there is always that. Either way i'll be at them!

What kind of music are you into, what size fests are you looking at, what part of the country are you looking at. I don't know as much about the west coast stuff but I still know about a few. Very few fests that arent super small on the east half of the states I haven't heard of though.

If you're looking to volunteer the 2 main ones at the bigger fests are Clean Vibes and Wet (work exchange team) I haven't done wet but had friends from canada on tour with us that did it at several fests and like it. Basically you put up a deposit the value of the ticket, then you work and if you don't show up and work you don't get your deposit back.

I did clean vibes at superball(phish fest) a few years ago. I was beat from working all day in the sun picking up garbage but it wasn't that bad. I had NOOOOOO money so it was massively better seeing phish each night than being home. Met some people, got some free drinks, food, other things, and high fives from festival goers for cleaning up garbage everywhere. Also you have the option with clean vibes of doing post festy clean up. You can ground score some crazy stuff but I just wanted to be done at 3pm the last night of music and rage and then leave the next morning.
http://www.cleanvibes.com/events.cfm
https://www.workexchangeteam.com/init.action?active=home

I think there's one for phish as well. Might be through clean vibes. I know they have people but not sure how to get involved.

All fests run on volunteer effort. The smaller fests couldn't exist without it. If there's a fest you're looking into email, or call as early as possible and see if they can work something out. Some of the small ones you can even work half the time for half the ticket. Festivals, especially the smaller ones very greatly in the amount of work they want you to do.

I've volunteered at more smaller ones. I prefer to just buy a ticket at the bigger ones. If you're doing a bunch of fests you can street team some of them for tickets to others. I've done that but not sure how easy it is for certain fests.

Are you trying to road trip or just bounce around wherever? There are fests every weekend from mid/late may - late sept/even october depending on location. In NY they go mid may- late september 100% and it's cold up here so you can bet there are some even earlier later farther south. Also way down south there's stuff in the winter even. Going to Aura in FL in Febuary.

Let me know what type of music, what part of the country and what sizes, what dates you'll be around for and will go from there.

There are SOOOOOOO many good fests in the states. I was bummed to miss pretty much all of them this year. The only downside to being in NZ/AUS. IF I hadn't hit my head I would have raged the late spring/early summer stuff. Going to go hard may/june if I'm around this year.

I bought my NYC and CHI tickets for that reason. I wish they'd play the beacon instead of the Best buy but moe. isn't selling that well these days.

I have an unpopular opinion but I hope camp bisco is dead. That place was fucked at the end and from what I heard I'm glad I skipped the last year. It's a shame but I wouldn't even want that festival back unless they were going to some how improve it. I feel like the EDM scene really gave that fest the final blow. Oh well.

Mentioned it earlier but I'm hoping to do the Saturday (11/29) of Time Warp in BK. It's expensive but the lineup and production should totally be worth it. If anyone else is thinking about going definitely let me know

Cheese was danks, I was super impressed and got a few songs I wanted. Contrary to some of y'all, I prefer the new Cheese. Dunno if you could tell but I was comin up pretty heavy at the time haha, that made for a fun show.

As for Bisco; As long as you have a tester you're fine there I'd say. I really love the little bubble of anarchy they had going.

IT was more than just that. The scene, the bikers, everything. A lot of real shady shit and not in a good way.

Idk, if it comes back I'm not sure I'll go. Depends. I do love me some biscuits though.

I've been talking to people and apparently it's a thing. I'm with you on the whole anarchy situation, I've been going for a few years now and I was bummed when it didn't happen last year. Yes it's a shit show, yes a whole hell of a lot of shady shit goes down but I totally find a weird sense of comfort in that and if it does end up happening, you can bet ill be there.

Same goes for Hudson. Now that was a literal shit show with all the nasty stuff I was stepping in towards the end of it, but hey I had a fantastic time not seeing Bassnectar there. Now I know that's happening again and if the line up is as killer as it was last year, I'll be there for sure.

wait tull someone in your crew gets beat up and robbed by security or in the middle of many other shady things happening. The last few yearsvthat place really got out of control. I wish theyd get rid of the edm for the most part and just have more bands playing. Sell less tickets and clean the place up. Not even sure if thats doable at that location. Honestlt surprised it ran as long as it did.

I guess i just dont find comfort in kids having seizures left and right and everything else that place has to offer. If it wasnt for security really going too far last year and killing any spark of that place had left id probably go again. Oh well. I wish i had made vibes and some other fests this year

abortionator mentioned selling less tickets for Bisco would help. Same for Hudson. First year and they go all out and didn't even get close to their max. Very unorganized and it turned into a shitshow. Was an awesome time and I hope the line up is as killer. I pass by the farm where Hudson was a lot on the way to the Catskills to go hiking and I always get nostalgic. The mayhem was just an amazing experience.

Waka is great. Finally might make an aura this year. Was supposed to go work there since 2010. Never made it. Almost did hulaween when the biscuits played in 2010 or 11 but didn't for some dumb reason. I think I hit something else. Lockns good stuff.

What'd you think of ROO? I'm not going near that place again personally but always interested to hear other peoples experiences.

Word, I was gonna say I have a friend selling two tickets for it. And they'll definitely be back around. Probably at least 2 shows at the spot in Rhode Island unless they outgrow that. A couple NYC shows a ct or 2. And plenty of NY, VT.

Roo, was fucking nuts I was way to spun to function for half of it but Umph killed it as always, I found good dose and I some how made it home. Would always be down to go to festivals with fellow NSers, PM me, and I am going to STS9 for new years in Denver

I might not make it to much next year. Only went to one fest this year. Probably doing summercamp>waka and a couple small ones then going back to NZ till the fall. Oh yeah hitting aura though.

Doing Phish NYE.

Glad you had a good time at roo and didn't run into all the shitiness that place has become.

bummed cause it looks like i'll be going solo to time warp. still should be insane though and I dance by myself anyway
