As i've found, the majority of popular female singers suck, (i.e. britney, christina, destiney's child) does anyone know of any good punk or alt artists?

The Chick in postal service is really good. but thats the only girl singer i like. everyone other one i think sucks.

It seriously depends on what kind of music you like and what kind of sacrifices you're willing to make when trying to rate a female singer, style, talent, lyrics. The names you listed are good ones to avoid, but then you have some girls who are very talented and real, but a record company has decided to over market them automatically making them suck. Take Jewel for eample, yuo listen to her old stuff, and she comes across as talented, if not a bit wishy washy, and now look at her... Record company wants to market a new image for her, she's wearing stupid clothes and singing soul-less music with no inspiration. The Music buisniess is a fickle machine and when it comes to females in the business it's really hard to decide because they don't get the respect they deserve, well at least some of them, and then the label decides they need to change their act, then, disaster...

Well, technically, Sarah Brightman might be the best female vocalist in the world, but I can't say I really like her style of music. Too poppy. Good bands with female singers include Jefferson Airplane (Grace Slick), The Pretenders (Chrissie Hynde), Fleetwood Mac (Stevie Nicks) and my favourite, Heart (Ann Wilson).

I personally don't like the distillers, or their vocalist...but I have heard a lot of about them from others. There are a couple girls on the postal service album, one is a back-up singer in like the choruses and such and then the other is only on track 4, I like her voice also and it works very well for that track.

Persnally I like Beyonce, and her music is nice to ski too...she is market like all those others, which sucks but what are gonna do?

The yeah yeah yeahs(very good), the sounds(not the greatest band...), redhead blondie(the female vocalist is amazing), the cardigans, ranier maria(spell check)...I can't remember anymore right now, but there are a lot of good female vocalist fronting bands.

The girl in evanescence, she used to sing opera, so she pretty good for the voice soundings.

^Amy Lee. Has a good voice, but Evanescence is somewhat annoying. There are many better opera singers.

Heart is good stuff. I am using 'Heartbreaker' in my 'segment' in my 'film' I am making. By Pat Benatar, she's okay, that song is pretty dope. Some of her stuff is garbage though.

Mazzy Star (Hope Sandoval)is hands down my favorite female lead singer. Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth is great, PJ Harvey, Karen O of the YeahYeahYeahs, my girlfriend loves Sinead O'Connor (I love the song with Shane MacGowan, Haunted), some of my friends like Rilo Kiely, but I haven't really gotten into them. On the Sweet Relief 2 cd, Garbage covers a Vic Chestnutt song which is very good called 'kick my ass'

I don't really like Christina Aguilera as a person, but she has an amazing voice, and some of her music is decent. I can't really think of any other girls.
