Fear of first flip

Hey so I've been skiing in the park for three years now and I feel like my progression on jump is pretty bad. I can do 720 no problem but whenever I want to try my first flip/off axis rotation I always panic. I can't bring myself to do my first flip and I am pretty comfortable doing off-axis, flips and even doubles on trampoline so my air awareness is pretty good.

Has this ever happened to you? and if so how did you conquer that fear.

Thanks!

Plenty of times. I use logic and self talk to overcome it.

My logic being, " I've done so many fuckin' (trick description) 's on the tramp my body knows how to do it but my brain won't allow me.

Self talk is kinda like you coaching yourself through words or a phrase. So if you get nervous, just tell yourself in a cool calm voice to, "just do (trick description)"

I find we do best when we're relaxed so just keep that in mind and don't let your nerves get the best of you.

There is a point when you just have to cut your teeth and do it... especially if you have them dialed on tramps. The release of mental tension after your first try is incredible.

Basically just sack up.

First time I tried a flip was a front flip off a 20ft jump. I legit just went to practice and was like fuck it I'm gonna do it.

Right now in at Windells and my friend convinced me that I could Lincoln the big jump so I just said fuck it and did it! Just gotta over take that fear

Dang I hope I'll be able to conquer that fear this winter... My rail game is like 10x better than my jumps and I hate it. I just really hope my fear will go away after my first try.

Just do it

Find a jump your comfty on

Hit said jump and get a feel for it

Visualize doing whatever trick off that jump. The airtime, the pop, everything.

Send that shit

The first time I did a flip I used music to pump me up to go for it. Flips are some of the easiest tricks you can do because it's probably 90% balls and 10% skill. And after you land the first couple you'll get over the fear of being upside down and stomp them all the time.

I feel ya OP. I was terrified the first time I ever attempted one.

Most times it's all a mental game and once you see past that it's much easier. Stop thinking about it when you actually go to do it. The less time you have to overthink, the better off you'll be. Have confidence in yourself that you know what you're doing and a little bit of that fear will subside...which kind of helps you fully commit and that's always helpful haha.

You got it though, youre gonna send it and afterwards be like that wasn't so bad! And you'll be hyped and it'll be so sick. (:

Alright I guess I'll just stop pussying out and send it in early season. BTW love the idea of T-Hall whisper haha. Is there any flip that is easy beside front and backies? I feel so unfomfortable doing them, I learned to double cork on tramps before doing a back flip xd

Flatspins, Lincolns, and Rodeos are the next easiest to learn imo. And you will feel more comfortable doing them as you go.

listen to mingg op. I remember watching her send her first backie in whistler on the ns snapchat and she was hyped haha, I learned Lincolns first. Felt really comfy on a tramp and I took it to the backcountry and sent it landed second time. Feels Sick

Everyone thinks flips are super hard for some reason. They're really not. Just send it.

Yeah, flips are easier than on axis spins in my opinion, because you just set it and send it.

not gonna lie. breaking the mental block for backflips was the hardest thing for me. like im still not 100% comfy on big jumps, but ill send em on medium sized. once you get that first one, hype goes through the roof. i was in your spot. dubs on the tramp, even a triple to foam. good luck fam

I'm gonna go the other way from most and say if it stresses you out that bad, remember no one is making you do it. Just remember that. You're not making yourself, none of us really care where you do or not.

Yeah I know but at the same time I want to do it for self accomplishment. I wanted to do it last season but never got the guts to do it. And it's frustating me because I know I'll probably land it first try.

If you have access to a water ramp I find those really help because it feels like a real jump, and because you're hitting water it kinda hurts if you screw up, so once you land it you know that you can push through the pain to get the trick.

Sadly no.. There's no water ramp/air bag that I can go to to practice. Only icy landings.

I'm in the same position. Do you think a front or back is easier? I am way more comfortable with fronts.

Backs are way easier since the jump is already pushing your momentum backwards and you don't have to rotate as much as a front.

backs are 100x easier and more natural

and OP as general advice, if you can visualize yourself doing it you probably have it, but either do it or don't. 100% commitment or nothing

if youre on the fence, wait til you can hit an air bag to assure that you can do the trick
