yeah jarossamdb7, Bid D is sooo good.

I saw MU 330, Voodoo Glow Skulls, and Streetlight Manifesto live in Jan. at the Ska is Dead Tour. MU 330 was incredible. Voodoo Glow Skulls were also good. Streetlight was decent.

way too many bands but I'll list a bunch anyways.

1208, afi, alkaline trio, bad religion, bayside, bouncing souls, face to face, die trying, death by stereo, dead poetic, emery, flogging molly, from first to last, funeral for a friend, h20, letter kills, misfits, nofx, pennywise, pulley, rise against, social distortion, strung out, the explosion, the real mackenzies, the matches, the used, tiger army, underoath, unwritten law,

AFI..I already talked about them. They aren't really punk anymore. Alkaline, Bayside, Death By Stereo, From First To Last, Funeral For A Friend, Letter Kills, The Matches, The Used, Underoath, and Unritten Law are all Screamo/Emo Bands.

Sure..they all spawned from punk. But I figured you were going for true punk and hardcore punk. Which is pretty much all old bands by now.

Rise Against is sort of like new punk..but at least you've got NOFX and Tiger Army. I'm going to go see both in about a week or two.

Punk is pretty much the older original punk bands.

"Punk" evolved into Emo/Screamo/Hardcore..etc.

Most are already listed. (NOFX, Minor Threat, Cheap Sex, Sex Pistols, Opertation Ivy..etc.)

Punk is to emo in that they whine about political problems and shit like that instead of how their girlfriends dumped them. Not everything is political...thats just a big thing they all happen to like to sing about.

I know this. The question was what are my favorite punk bands are and I listed a bunch of different bands that come to mind.

While death by stereo is about as different from the clash as night and day I still consider it all punk music. There's way too many subgenres out there but still fall under the 'punk' category. Just like all trance, rave, industrial, and progressive trance gets categorized as techno.

Sure, AFI's newer cd might sound a bit poppish, but it does not define them. They are still a punk band. When I refer to them as being one of my favorite punk bands I think of all their cds from 'answer that and stay fashionable', 'very proud of ya', shut your mouth, and so on.

Yes, bands like the ramons, sex pistols, new york dolls, the clash, and the damned were originally labelled as punk music. But there has never been any rigid defiinition of what punk music is. It has been a loose term to define the scene, attitude, and music movement. Punk literally means snotty and worthless and was the term that Dave Marsh coined. He was a rock critic for Creem Magazine. Many other journalists picked up on the term and so it came to be.

Call it screamo, hardcore, garage punk, proto punk, pop punk, emo, or even pseudo goth emo. There are many derivative forms and subgenres. It is still punk music nonetheless.

^hes right. there are tons of bands that are considered punk or proto punk, such as the who or a very influential band called 'the sonics' who were from seattle, you really can't put a rigid definition on punk.

as for my favorites

misfits

the kids

filth

the stooges

the velvet underground (if you want to count them)

the adicts

sex pistols

cocksparrer

the damned

adolescents

germs

mission of burma

indie lovers unite! the independent music cult

haha nice someone else who likes mustard plug.

has it occurred to anyone that a lot of the bands you're listing are somewhat questionable as punk...i.e. I'd more consider the ataris emo, but that's just me.

Techno isn't the main label for that sort of music..

Techno falls under ELECTRONIC music.

Ambient, Hardcore, Techno, Jungle, etc..they all fall under electronic music .

The thing is though, that Punk was originally what I said before. Other genres evolved and it just seems more proper to put them in those genres, because they sound and sing about a lot different stuff.

Emo/Screamo/etc now is a whole lot different from older Punk...and I also did mention that they all sort of fall under punk..since they all evolved from it.

But where do you draw the line with genres? With the number of genres today, no artist can be grouped into just one. Many singers who are considered emo are also hardcore and punk and alternative ect. And to top it off, no one can agree to certain definitions of each genre, everyone has a different interpretation of them.

yeah i guess even emo and screamo and all that stuff is just a derivitive of punk, so wouldn't it be easier for it to just be classfied as punk?? i mean, i know that most people say punk is politicla and angry music. but what about bands like the ramones? many of therir songs were about girls and the beach. i just think it is weird.

Anti-Flag

MXPX

NOFX

Sugarcult, sort of

old green day if you consider that punk

No. Wrong.

When a new genre is made, it is made by a creator. That creator then defines the sound for that genre. For example..there are MANY metal genres...all are different than eachother and all have there defined reasons for being entitled the way they are. A genre can't be interpreted as it is a specific sound of a type of music. Something like that is based on fact.

And I don't think you even know what the hell hardcore is if you are saying its emo. My god you are so far from reality that it hurts. Hardcore/Math is SOOOOO fucking different than emo and if you know what they were you would NEVER get them mixed up.

Go download The Chariot or The Black Dhalia Murder for some nice Math/Hardcore, and then compare that to Motion City Soundtrack, Park, or Armor For Sleep. NOTHING alike.

Every band also sort of chooses there sound and puts themself in a genre. A band chooses to be Emo or chooses to be Power Metal. With that said, they inherit that sound. There may be minor innovations..but unless they are totally trying to create a new genre of music, you should be able to deviate what type of sound it is.

No. Wrong.

I never said that hardcore and emo or are the same, but an artist can fit into both genres, they are not that different. Example, http://www.purevolume.com/underoath .

Underoath is listed as screamo, hardcore, and alternative (Screamo being a form of emo). I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume that whoever labels these bands has a better idea of genres than you. Heres another example of cross over between genres, http://www.purevolume.com/thechariot . The Chariot is listed as hardcore, metal and southern rock. Woah, just like I said in my last post, there is a lot of different genres and bands can be in more than one.

Oh and bands don't just choose to be in certain genres and then conform to that style of music. Genres were made to describe a group of musicians who have a style of music distinct from others.

If you would have read my last post, you would know that my whole point was that there are so many genres that it's often difficult to dicern which one best suits a certain artist. There are no definitions that everyone can agree on, because there isn't a "creator" that sets out to create genres.

I was mostly discussing the fact that you were listing extremely contrasting genres of music together.

Hardcore and Emo will never be together.

I understand that stuff can fit into multiple categories.
