If it were up to me, I would redefine the term 'author' to exclude JK Rowling. But as it's not up to me, she just BARELY qualifies.Go read Robert Jordan if you want moern fantasy. But enough talk of trash reading; my favourite author is Tolkein, but Wodehouse, Austen, Wilde, Chesterton, and Hemingway are all greats in their own respects, and are among my favourites.

Bret Easton Ellis or Chuck Palahunik, and Diary is pretty good, weird of course but enjoyable. Tom Robbins is also very good, I recommend Still Life with Woodpecker.
