Republican or Democrat?

A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so

many others her age, she considered herself to be a very liberal

Democrat, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in favor of

higher taxes to support more government programs, in other words

redistribution of wealth.

She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch Republican,

a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had

participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt

that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep

what he thought should be his.

One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher

taxes on the rich and the need for more government programs. The

self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had t o be the

truth and she indicated so to her father.

Her father responded by asking how she was doing in school.

Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and

let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was

taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which

left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She

didn't even have time for a boyfriend, and didn't really have many

college friends because she spent all her time studying.

Her father listened and then asked, 'How is your friend Audrey doing?'

She replied, 'Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy

classes, she never studies, and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so

popular on campus; college for her is a blast. She's always invited to

all the parties and lots of times she doesn't even show up for classes

because she's too hung over.'

Her wise father asked his daughter, 'Why don't you go to the Dean's

office and ask him to deduct 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your

friend who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and

certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA.'

The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily fired

back, 'That's a crazy idea, how would that be fair! I've worked really

hard for my grades! I've invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard

work! Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played

while I worked my tail off!'

The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, 'Welcome to the Republican party.'

 
Except GPA doesn't determine if someone lives and dies in poverty or not, or determine if someone gets the medical attention they need, nor does it provide a good environment for children to grow up and prosper.

But OK.
 
i think that analogy is perfect, yeah it doesnt explain how we can feed people, but its the general idea of the republican/democrat debate. im not gonna say anything more than this story is really good for the fact that some stupid ass e-fight is gonna happen.
 
lets see if you disagree still when you're all the ones in the workforce and all the baby boomers who are leaving the work force that worked under shitty salaries only have their government pension funds to rely on. and since they are so use to their standard of living they will be demanding ridiculously expensive social programs which will raise your taxes to support these people. now your taxes will be going to the impoverished and the baby boomers that didn't have the foresight or couldn't afford to retire. its only going to get worse.
 
Ok, it's a shitty analogy because it assumes that people who are poor don't work hard, which is bullshit. GPAs are fair, life isn't.
 
so basically you're saying that all lower and middle-class people just goof off and fuck around, and they dont deserve help but those people that are rich from oh lets say.. inheritance, deserve the massive tax breaks that they get? Thats an ignorant analogy
 
You are taking that section of the story the wrong way. It was meant to make the daughter want to keep what she had worked hard to earn.
 
exactly, why should the people who have worked hard for their sccess and assets be forced to pay and give more.

Its a pretty funny story that makes a pretty good point but I would hardly say its a perfect analogy. If you just take it for what it is, a joke, then its great. If you try to get more out of it then of course its going to be stupid.
 
It's funny because I was having a debate about taxes and the democratic vs. republican viewpoint. He was very republican about it and I was looking at it more democratically. My parents are also pretty wealthy so it really fits this haha, never really thought about it before and I kinda thought them as selfish for supporting republican tax ideals. Gives me a new perspective to think about.
 
this is a perfect example of why people should not listen to the left-wing media. do you people even know what president bushes "wealthy tax cuts" were, or do you just assume that the top rich got all the tax breaks. for your information there are only 6 tax brackets in the system a bush cut all but the lowest 2. the reason he did not cut all of them is because the lowest tax bracket, in all reality, does not pay any taxes at all, the government is actually paying them. The second tax bracket does not pay hardly any of the taxes in this country. So if you make 31,000 you got a tax break. and since 31,000 is considered "middle class" you must be rich according to the left wing media.
 
Anyone with an average level IQ can work hard and get rich. The people who have rich family's? Well their ancestors were either smart or worked hard, probably both. Why shouldn't their money go to whatever they want, be it their family or self indulgence? If you have a crappy starting pont in life blame your loser parents. Most poor people in america are either dumb or lazy, so I say fuck em'. My money belongs in my pocket, not providing child care to some hood rat who can't support her own family. Most of you guys are still living under your parents, at least financially, once you're on your own, you'll probably have a change of opinion about what's fair.
 
if your born with money and inherited then your just a lucky person and should not be punished...im sure that most people with some money who worked for it would rather not give it away becuase they worked for it and had to put a lot of effort. the thread creator's example is perfect why you should keep what you make or inherit.
 
Its pretty easy to see on NS who is still living with their parents, or off of them. Like the previous two posts above mine, i worked hard for whats mine, i really dont feel to kindly about giving it away to taxes.

Take the joke for what its worth, just wanted to make a couple people think, but more importantly laugh!
 
I dont live with my parents, i pay every penny of my college education and my rent. I pay for my own food and clothing. I will support taxation till the day i die. Why? Because paying taxes makes my state college tuition lower, it helps out ppl who need it, and it provides the essential road work and infrastructure that is needed in this country. Also, not everyone who works hard gets rich, there are plenty of ppl in this country who work 2-3 jobs and can barely make it by, they work way harder than most ppl but cant get ahead.

That being said this story was a joke and a pretty good one. The logic is off though period.
 
you, sir, are brilliant. thats why the privatization of social security is brilliant. thats why voting for mccain, instead of candidates who will raise taxes and nationalize health care (thereby putting a government hand in investment and eliminating compeitive free market choice) that would bankrupt the country and destroy the quality of our health care.

go read my thread about social security and you will see the emmpirical evidence that supports this position. then go vote republican in the coming election!
 
Dude just because you took a highschool level poli sci class doesnt mean you know everything about everything. By voting for McCain you are basically driving the country closer too bankruptcy because you are in effect voting to pursue more war in more countries. That costs money. Effectively you cant lower taxes and increase spending. The numbers wont add up. I cant believe ppl buy in to that Reganomics bullshit. Good to know your actually paying attention to something in school, even if it is complete bullshit.

Oh and I never said we shouldnt privatize Social security. Ill let you in on a little secret tho.....its not going to happen. Here is why: Statistically young bucks such as yourself dont vote. Old ppl do. So whoever is going to try and change Social Security the other side will tell the old folks they wont get their money. Old ppl being the voters that they are, will effectively stamp out any chance of you ever seeing a nickel of tht money.
MORAL OF THE STORY: Vote.
 
this story is so simple and easy to follow, they should make this into a picture book for rich white children to explain why they deserve a brighter future than poor black children.

youd have to be pretty white and pretty stupid to think thats an accurate analogy of redistribution of wealth and social programs. but fine, im sure the executive who makes hundreds of thousands at a job 'earned' through his daddys connections is working harder than a single parent struggling to support a family. ive said it before.... stupid people are proof that there is no god

You do realize that capitalism has been fixing the problem of poverty, not creating it,. Capitalism originally inherited it. The average status of man throughout history has been poverty. It hasn't been until recently that the average person was given the opportunity to come past this norm.

good post Tanner, but people are still going to rip on you and say stuff like, well the reason for the increase is because the industrial age came along, or that prices started to rise as the worlds population rose, stuff like that.

However, and I'm sure you realized this on the graph, that the turning point is when capitalism took place when this country was formed.
 
There is no simple way to say this. But people deserve what they earn. Whether it be by luck, intelligence, work ethic, or whatever. It doesn't matter whether you have a lot or you have a little, you should be able to keep what you earn.

there are poor people who "deserve" to be poor

The less the government steals from people the more attractive it is to be generous. I believe in voluntary socialism, but not government mandated. If a group of people like a church wants to be like the churches in the old testament and put all of their stuff into the church to share that is fine but I don't need them taking the fruits of my labor if I need it myself.
 
But if you don't spend taxes you don't get any help from the government...and everyone gets help from the government. I think that it isn't a very good analogy, but if the college gave free tutoring to everyone who wanted it and you had to give up part of your GPA for everyone then it would be fare.
 
That rich executive deffinatly had a step up from the start, I'm sure his parents were financially secure before he was born. Unlike the single mother who got knocked up one drunken night. Daddy doesn't pay child support? I guess she shouldn't have fucked such a loser with out a condom or birth control. I guess she'll just have to enroll in the numerous government programs offered for poor familys, programs that the rich executive paid much more into. Don't turn this into a black/white thing, it's not. It's about stupid people making stupid decisions that not only ruin their own lives, but give their kids a disadvantage. For some reason you feel sorry for them.
 
the girl got raped and that is why there is no child support coming in, unfortunately this happened during her senior year in HS so she couldn't graduate, it ended up being twins, her parents tried to help but couldn't, one of her kids gets sick but she doesn't have health insurance because she can't afford it, what then? I am not saying that there are many people in that bad of situations, but even for the ones that were on drug addicts and had sex without a condom, but even those people deserve the governments help, and the government needs to get its money from somewhere.
 
I'm sure rape babies make up less than a percent of people in that situation(unable to provide for their family). But I'll play, she shouldn't have been hanging out in such a dangerous area. Abortion and adoption are more responsible alternatives. If she wasn't willing to kill or give up her rape babies, be it for religious or personal reasons, then she should live with the consequences of her decision. Drug addicts who had sex without a condom? Once again, too fucking bad. They don't deserve my money, they've already proven they're incapible of making good decisions, why should I bail them out? If you're having sex you're probably aware of what happens if you don't take precautionary measures. If you want to help them go ahead and make a donation of your own money, you earned it, do what ever you like with it. You say they deserve help, I say they deserve to be held resopnsible for their choices.

Yes, this analogy does basically describe the Republican Party vs. the Communist Party. Not the Democratic Party.

Yea it sucks for people living in the ghettos, but i have worked hard for what i have, and no way in hell am i donating it to someone else. And no one should bring this race thing into it, i would never give my money to a white trash family any more than a black one.

and on another note, i vote McCain not only because of i like what he has to say, but i would NEVER vote for a man who has ties to a preacher who believes that the white men are the root of all evil...

thats exactly right. i care about myself and my family because they are who my money goes into, and thats what my motivation for work is. sorry, i just find motivation in giving my money to some crack whore who got knocked up.
 
A) You dont care about yourself?

B) its our hard earned dollars that are being taxed.

C) We all care about ourself and the well being of not only ourselves but others as well. Some people actually deserve to be on the system and thats why its there, but given our current economic situation its hard enough for the average individual person to live on their paycheck now, let alone give more up of it to people that make bad choices.
 
If I was enslaved by white men for over 300 years I would believe that white men were the root of all evil too...
