Fat skis vs thin skis

hey I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a significant difference in riding a ski that is 91 under foot compared to 82 under foot. I want to get a ski that is wide enough for the pow but still handles well in the park. i was thinking first bloods.

I'd say PE's they're just about in the middle of what you're looking for, 85 waist, although they don't really excel in any particular part of the mountain. The great thing about them is that they are cheap compared to others and pretty durable, I think they should fit what you're looking for. Although, it would be definetely better if you could demo some skis, personally I think it all comes down to preferences, you shoudln't really judge something based on their brands and prices or whatever, but ya...some of them are really ugly lol

I love all these people just throwing out ski names...he didn't say to name what skis you like, he asked if fatter skis were better than skinny skis, and visa versa. In general (within the scope of what a particular ski will be used for) the fatter the ski - the more fun it is. No one wants to ride skinny ass skis, thats why all skis have been getting progressively fatter over the years.

what would you guys say is the minimum width that would be easily rideable in the back country (not all that often) but easily rideable in the park (most time spent)

Wrong, fatter skis offer a wider platform and more stability - proof: Instead of just offering the Invader this year, Line decided to up with bill with the Anthem, and it was one of the most anticipated skis of the 06/07 season (pre-kiss lawsuit and all that shit). Not many people ride a park ski with a 93 waist, because no one had built it yet, clearly though, there was a market for it, because people realize that fat skis are better. End of story.

fat skis are not always better. You didn't prove anything. All you did was mention a market niche that was filled. I like fat skis myself, on park or anywhere, BUT they do not perform as well on groomers.

I'd say if you're not gonna ride BC that much, you could get something 80mm at the waist and be set for pretty much any day of the year. It seems like now that there's tons of fat skis all over the place people think its impossible to ride Pow on anything under 100 mm waist. It's cool but I mean, if you ride mostly park you don't need a pow ski.

i have pretty thin skis like 80 or something and they work everywhere. i don;t float as much in powder, but sinking in makes it seem deeper so i like it. but i'd like to buy something around a 95

I don't care what movie it's from. Maybe I'm Jewish and maybe it offends me. Little immature punks like you guys shouldn't be allowed on this site. We used to have intelligent conversations....the good ol'days.

I think a 88-94 mm wast is a good all mountain do everything ski. however you do find nice do-everything skis outside of this range. For example the Rossignol Scratch BC. However there are more things to consider. I really like the big trobles becuase they are on the wider end and the flex pattern is great. The do well in the park but are also just as good in powder or courd. Also when mounted close to center they are really fun switch in most conditions. The only things they are not good at is ice and pipe. which is why I have my Trouble Makers.

If you were up on current events, you would know that Sacha Baron Cohen is a British comedian who plays the characters Ali G and Borat (and another, Bruno) on his show. He then goes around Europe and the USA and interacts with people who do not know he is acting, to expose their prejudices. He is Jewish by the way.

I'm very up on current events. Know all about the movie. This site is a place to talk about skiing, not spew racism. If he replaced Jew with Nigger I'm sure there would be more people pissed off. But no, bashing Jews is no acceptable because of a movie. Grow up.

No, you're not. And you don't get it. He is Jewish and did not write the song with the intent to bash Jewish people, rather he wrote it with the intent to out others who may harbor racist tendencies. Perhaps you hate Jews sir.

This is rediculous. I think we should keep this site about skiing. Bringing in racist comments like this detracts from the culture of the site. Maybe there's some 8 year old jewish kid on here reading that. They haven't seen Borat, nor do they have the maturity to deal with the intent of the movie.

I had a wonderful time last season skiing everything on the east, ice, groomers, park, rails, with my 187 MSPs. They're mad stable, not ideal for park, but def work.

yeah, and if you make a big sidecut on a ski, guess what, the waist gets thinner. The point is, you told him fat skis were better for everything, that's just not true.

but then you have to take into account the amount of effort needed to carve. A fat ski requires much more then a ski with a smaller waist.
