External Harddrive for HD footage.

I already tried the searchbar and it didn't really help too much.

I just got a new imac and I'm thinking of getting a external harddrive to put all of my HD footage on. I've heard good and bad things about pretty much every brand so I was wondering if I could get some recomendations for which brand and model to get.

I'm not really looking for a portable one, just something I can leave on my desk with my computer. I'm only going to be using it for storing footage, and all I really need is a 500G harddrive.

thanks,

RAID 1 or 0, Hub Powered, 7200rpm, 500GB or 1TB (250GB or 500GB in RAID 1), Firewire 400/800/ SATA/ USB
Ideal for video editing and can copy an identical set of files and data to the separate disk in case of one HD failing, as it contains two drives. Not exactly the cheapest alternative but depends how bad it would be if you lost all your data, assuming you don't want the hassle of constantly backing everything up.

that looks sweet, only if you can choose what drives they're putting in there, and whether or not you can change a broken drive yourself.

but you got the right idea with a Raid 1 setup, I have that in my computer right now

Make sure to get at least 500gb with firewire 400 or 800. Lacie ruggeds are super legit and portable, western digital is a good brand too. Should be able to find ruggeds for like 140ish and you could find a western digital for about 100ish.

I second g-technology. Did a lot of research a couple months ago narrowed it down to g-tech and Lacie; went with g-tech. I liked the reviews and they have 3 year warranty, time machine ready. I just became pumped on the company and chose them

looking to get an external hard drive for hd video file storage as well. i have a pc with windows vista if that helps. i also dont wanna spend too much but somewhere in the $100ish range would work

Remember, you'll need a backup drive as well. Never store footage without a backup, that's just asking to loose everything some day.

i just picked up a 2TB western digital firewire 800 drive last week. i'm generally happy with it, but time machine won't run. i don't think it has anything to do with the drive, since it won't open even without the drive plugged in. it gives me some error code -43 or something. any ideas?

just bought this but the 500gb model. im stoked and read a bunch of good reviews also!

thanks newschoolers

i have an iomega 1 terabite for hd videos, its worked well so far for me. it was 120 at bp photo video.
