External hard drives

see the problem with the rugged drives is they aren't really rugged on the inside, they still have hardrives with spinning platters inside them, and ANY movement can cause those platters to wobble and be damaged. If you want a truly rugged drive, you NEED an ssd, but with the price/size ratios of the current models, it is just not practical. I've seen many ruggeds that have broken, not on the outside but the drive is still corrupt from moving it around so much(happened to my sister, and she rarely used it)

You are editing on a stationary computer, so get a stationary drive. they will not only run faster, but are far more reliable thanks to never moving them.

just get the d2, you will be very satisfied with it

For the best reliability, buy an enclosure with firewire/esata/usb 3.0, and pick the internal drive yourself. You never know what kinda drive could be in an external, and it can vary within the same model. Get like a Samsung F3 if you're looking for best bang for your buck, or a WD Caviar Black if you have money to drop.

I have a 2tb gtech. Super fast, haven't had any problems with it. It's sort of expensive compared to others listed in this thread though

gonna bump this......

ended up getting the Lacie d2 2TB USB 3.0 Firewire 800 eSATA 7200rpms and a Lacie Rugged 500GB 3.0 5400 rpms. Got the Rugged as basically a backup for those favorite shots of mine or shots for a client.

will write up a review and let everyone know how they are once I get them and use them for a while.

gonna bump this because i need a new hard drive. i've been editing off of a 150gb usb connection hard drive for years, i never knew that i was doing something wrong there. never noticed any problems with speed somehow, does the speed just determine transfer rates or does actual editing get bogged down by it? kind of confused as to why i haven't noticed anything. anyway it's not working anymore so i need to get a new one.

-i definitely don't need over 1TB, 500GB would probably be ideal. i'm looking for quality over storage capacity.

-after reading this thread i'm guessing firewire 800 is the way to go for my macbook pro

-i am editing on a laptop and travel back and forth between my house and the city/the mountain a lot via ferry so i need it to be somewhat durable and not require any external power sources. it's not going to get banged around a lot or anything, but it will spend a decent amount of time in my backpack

-can't spend over $200. would like to spend between $100-$150

Lacie rugged firewire 800 1tb drive sounds perfect for you.

1tb - 200 bucks

500gb -125 bucks

honestly, id get the 1tb. After you use up that 500gb you'll be pissed cause you're SOL. the extra money it worth the extra space, IMO. I just used up a 2tb drive in about 4 months. You can get 1tb hard drives cheaper but they won't be "portable" and will need external power sources. I went from a 1tb firewire 800 lacie rugged to a 2tb lacie XL and i tell you what, i miss having a portable drive.

Mmmmm... and this one is nice because it is Windows and Mac compatible. It's a pain when your Windows buddies want music/footage etc but can't get it via your easy, portable external...

I have one, and while its alright, the firewire crapped out on me after about 4 months of usage, and i've had it corrupt on me too.

Woah. those are more expensive than I thought. Any toasters with the same option? Only looking for 2 bays.
