External Hard Drives

Alright, I have an IBM laptop right now, next year my school is giving me a brand new iBook. I need to transfer all my data to my new computer. If I buy an external hard drive now, can I format it to an IBM, then format it again to the iBook?

I'm not sure.....that's actually a pretty good question.

uhh thats a damn good question.. My intial thought would be no, but when i think about it there really should be a way to do it. I'm somewhat mac illiterate but then again who uses macs anyway

I think if you were to do a full format and wipe the drive clean you could than start over with whatever format you'd like. What school give out ibooks?

I'd say screw the external drive unless you're gonna need it to transfer files. I'd get a DVD-RW. you're gonna use it more for other things and you can cram most of your shit onto 1 or 2 disks and they burn cds aswell.

*need it to transfer files to computers that don't have a dvd drive.

I would agree except they are still pretty expensive. It may be cheaper to just buy a external drive. The dvd-Rw would be alot cooler though

Get an iPod (or similar), then you have a sweet mp3 player once you've transferred your shit.

I've sort of been looking into external FireWire drives since I got my new laptop. Most of the ones that I have been looking at support both PCs and Macs but I'm not too sure about both at the same time. Like someone said above, if you format the drive and then change file systems things would be fine.

well as long as you do not plan on booting from the drive you could partition it. and format the one partition for a fat or ntfs file system and let the mac format the other partition with tthe mac filesystem. you may have to partition with mac first and format mac first or pc first, or else it might not work, i am not sure which one you would have to do first but theoretically it is possible.

shit sorry i'm acting like a post whore but he's still not done

don't think it'll register with both an iBook and a IBM PC... you might need to burn a CD, if you can find an external CD burner.

i think he's done now..
