One thing I would suggest, instead of buying an external hard drive, buy a hard drive enclosure. With the enclosure(which isn't that expensive) you can just put a normal hard drive in it and it becomes an external hard drive. And the combined price of enclosure and hard drive, is a lot cheaper than an external one.

If you buy an external, don't buy one with lots of lights. It will get really annoying and they are pretty bright in the dark! You'll end up putting it in your drawer, which is a good idea anyway just to keep it out of the way.

That's exactly right. Buy a case and get a high quality drive. If you get something like a good +120 gig hard drive and an external case seperately you'll end up saving about 60 bucks or so and have better equipment.

^is this setup fairly small in size or would it be huge? I want something that I can move around a lot easily so size is a factor. Thanks for the input so far.

I have 2 hooked up to themselves. One is a no-name brand 120 gig and the other is a Lacie 250 gig. Soo money. The Lacie was a dank deal, $170 for 2fity gigs. Check macmall.com for good deals.

newegg is a good place to go, they do charge more though b/c of their customer service (which is quite good).

If you're relatively hardcore about it (and that's not that hardcore) you should find the best deal on the size hard drive you want and buy an external case from somewhere like macmall or clubmac.

The lacie someone referenced above me is one of the biggest rip-offs I've ever seen. a 100 gig hd running at 5400 can be purchased for about $50 and the case you can get for an additional $50.

Do yourself a favor and make sure the drive is 7200 rpms.

To find what you want go to http://www.pricewatch.com. Find the drive you want (or go to bestbuy or stapleseven...sometimes their rebates are REALLY good). Then, go to pricewatch and search "usb hard drive case". You'll find a number of USB 2.0 external drive cases for around $30-$40. you do not need to worry about name brands for those cases b/c they all are normally built off the exact same converter board.

The case will end up being SLIGHTLY larger than the hard drive.

Check out this link for external usb 2.0 cases
