Explaining Rave Culture to the Americans

yeah, live instruments can most def be incorporated and imo greatly improve any show

chemical brothers for example mix their own tracks at shows but add in live synths, drum lines, and whatever sounds they feel needed

off topic but this is really interesting

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/dec11/articles/chem-bros.htm

but i agree with most of what that article said, not every song needs a drop, and yes without drugs people would probably not feel the same way about listening to repetitive electronic sounds with flashing lights

I read a few of his other articles and while they're sometimes funny it seems like he's just always bitching about something. That's all he can really write about. Like the "I don't get smoking weed" where he calls weed the worst drug out there. Like that can be your opinion but its a pretty stupid one to have when there are drugs like meth and heroine... Just my $.02

Dubstep is gay, Raving is gay, all just gay and god awful music. The crowd at those shows atleast in the U.S are a bunch of pussy queer bitches who cant dance and drop acid and think they are cool for looking like a fucking retard with a bunch of LED lights hanging from their dick. I HATE ravers HATE THEM, There are so many at my damn school and I just want to punch them in the face and give them a god damn Rolling Stones album.

end/rant.

If you ever get a chance to see him I would highly recommend going. He has a great stage presence and really mixes in so many different genres of music, it's a fucking fantastic time. Stoked to see a set by Grizmatik this March too, shit's gunna be wild.

Thank god the rave scene is dying at my school. Unfortunately all the rave kids are starting to lose their beads and trade them in for drug rugs and grateful dead shirts. I really don't want these people in the jam scene...

sorry what? Toronto - culturally repressive? clearly you've been partying with quite the wrong people. MTL is fun but it ain't Tdot.

Well I disagree about the dead, but I'm talking about more than just the dead- Yonder mountain string band, string cheese, moe, umphrey's, widespread panic, Lettuce, soullive, galactic, greyboy all stars, Kung-fu, etc. And I don't just listen to jam, but as far as live performances go, the music at smaller jam festivals like mountain jam, gathering of the vibes, wormtown, and Catskill are the best. I've been to tons of different shows of different Genres and jam festivals are always the most fun.

Woah, careful how you use that term... Techno actually refers to a genre, not just general electronic music. But that might be what you had in mind.

"EDM" is to Dance music as "twintipping" is to freeskiing.

The author knows his shit. Plain and simple.

Not even close to what I listen to. Keep "raving" bro a ton of successful and very smart people go to those "concerts".

this article is horribly disgusting, written by someone who clearly doesnt understand the north american or the rest of the worlds EDM scene, and read by people who clearly dont understand it either. Two completely different scenes, anyone in this thread hating on Mad Decent is wack, and if you dont like hearing 100,000 watts of bass at a show, you might wanna get checked out! Raving is much different here than it is in the UK...its so different i really feel wrong calling it raving..
