Experience with new Gore-Tex Pro jacket

Hi!

With the commercial going in the banner above, I could not just let this case pass:

My boyfriend has just tested a jacket made of the newest 2013 fall Gore-Tex Pro, that is said to be so much more breathable than previous Gore-Tex Pro models.

He wanted to have a jacket just for walks and trekking mostly, nothing extreme, that kept him dry. But what he experienced was that on a 45 minutes walk on asphalt, almost flat but a few meters to climb, noting steep: Damp would gather as moisture on the inside of the jacket after finishing.

Temperature between 2-10 degrees celcius (35,6-46,4 F). Helly Hansen base layer wool and polyamide, Haglöfs middle layer polartec fleece. So the jacket and layers should to be top notch. The jacket itelf costs in Norway with todays currency $968...

He just concluded that that was not good enought and went to return the jacket. As he could buy a less expensive that would give same result.

I did the same walk the same day with another 7 year shell jacket of type Dermizax. Completely dry inside of jacket. I had another mid layer setup with wool, but still...

QUESTION:

Do you have the same experience or can you tell a better story of the new Gore-Tex pro?

Well honestly if he's that sweaty of a guy then he should have gotten an eVent shell or something instead of just throwing money at something and assuming it would be what he wanted because it's expensive.

The new Pro fabrics are more breathable than OLDER Pro, but still nowhere near as breathable as some others out there now.

Seriously. Research before you buy. No shell is a fleece and all will have SOME condensation issues. Being mad because it isn't a miracle that defies logic and physics isn't exactly the most legit course of action. I have a new '13/'14 Gore Pro jacket and think it works great- but I also want it's exact mix of properties- if I ran hotter I'd need something else.

Just sayin'.

sounds like he was overdressed for those temperatures. even with a non-waterproof material, i'd be sweating my nuts off with that many layers on if it was 40F outside

Boyfriend needs to learn how to layer properly. Just because mid layers exist does not mean they should always be worn. Anything above 30 and I'm wearing an ultralight baselayer/shell combo. And that's just for riding lifts. Not actually working.

it doesn't matter how nice your house is if it's built on a shitty foundation.

I can't wear long sleeves under a shell until it gets below 20F or so. I'm usually more than warm enough with a gore tex or similar shell and a base layer tshirt. Odds are I will have some vents open as well. I really can't understand how people have so many layers on. And yes, I do understand cold...I grew up and lived most of my life in Minnesota.

Sounds like way too many unneccesary layers on.

Thanks for the input. Agree could have been a bit too much for that temperature... Anyhow I did some research for him before we did buy the jacket. Actually we went out looking for the Rab Neo jacket that I had read should bee very breathable compared to other shells. But we did not find it in stores her, only online.

The Rab jacket one uses Polartec Neo Shell. Any experience on this one or heard anything about that technology? As I understood It was supposed to be less waterproof than other shells, but again more than enough. As a benefit of less waterproof it should be more breathable.
