Everyone on NSers please be careful

This is a very common concern and point of contention in the SAR world. As a patroller we have had many people refuse an ambulance in critical situations based on the worry that their insurance would not cover it.

hey man, dont listen to these 12 year old kids telling you that your stupid or "an idiot". You did the rite thing staying therer with your girl and staying warm, OP is the man.

he can wait 5 years. maybe 10. he is not responsible enough for marriage.
lol oh lordy no i love how serious people are getting in this thread. glad to youre okay man. hoping you take alot away from this.

Let me start out by saying I in no way meant to rag on you. I actually thanked you earlier for posting this reminder, knowing full well you would take a lot of heat. The last thing i want to do is give you a hard time for one bad decision, that we have all made, and that you have already paid for through and through. That being said, my first reaction would have been similar to the people that didn't call. I would not have wanted to pick up the tab on my rescue. That story does bring up an interesting point and one I hadn't really seen.

I would like to see these be evaluated on more of a case to case basis perhaps. I think I unfairly lumped you in with the people you hear about every year. The ones that go out hiking by themselves, inadequately prepared or experienced, and then disobey all warning signs and get lost. I think you could make a case that you are an experienced and responsible skier that made one poor choice and you should get your get out of dodge free card.

I think I'm kind of rambling now. It does seem like very steep "fine" to pay in comparison to a speeding ticket per se. I would be in your boat. Happy to pay, but still begrudging because I pay so much in taxes already. ( inam a 24 yr old unmarried aerospace engineer, thank dod i bought a house so i could have at least one big writeoff) I also in no way meant to infer you aren't a taxpayer, I just meant other tax payers. I don't know this is a slippery issue to debate, a lot less clear cut than I initially thought.

Anyways. I don't know. I think maybe you've melted my cold heart because I know that couldve been me. And it would suck to go through all that and then have to shell out a few thousand. And I know you're extremely grateful for your rescue and will definitely not repeat the incident. It's a cruel world isn't it? Seems like some mistakes we pay more for than others, some way more.

For those that have iPhones it's s simple and effective tool, particularly if you use the check in facilitiy before you head up the hill and during the day.

You always see how SAR teams don't want people to foot the bill for their rescues. Often the rationale, like in the example you gave(not your experience), is that people would rather take their chances and avoid the bill. While avoiding that situation may be the reasoning for the actual responders, the more rescues a SAR team makes the more they grow. And to them, as long as the cost of a search is covered it doesn't matter who pays. On the other hand tax payers stuck with the bill don't always agree with being charged for another persons irresponsibility. This goes way past just search and rescue.

Personally I'd like to see people held accountable for their own actions, or at least I don't want to have to spend my hard earned money on another mans, usually selfish, mistakes. I'm glad to read you were accepting of your responsibility. But even if it turns out you don't have to pay, I'd rather have tax dollars go to your rescue than some scumbag on welfare.(though I'll end up paying for both *old man fist shake*)

I'm sure it is, but if I were to make a possibly life saving program such as yours, wouldn't it make sense to try to make it available to that other 60% that are not iPhone owners? Or at least other Smartphone users who may use phones such as Blackberry or HTC?

Another question: can it work for iPod Touches? They're basically the same thing without the phone part...

i think the homie knows he blew it..... hes just looking out for the rest of you, dont blow it. good lookin out.

I don't think you can really pass judgment on his thought process until you are stuck in a similar situation.

i love people trying to hate in this thread. he realizes he fucked up. that is the entire point, so fucking douchebags like yourselves can learn from his mistake.

but seriously man, im really glad you are ok. can you give us any information on when that episode of "I Shouldn't Be Alive" is going to air?

I think some of the posters here need to realize how difficult and dangerous hiking back up your tracks can be. It can take hours just to move a couple hundred feet and the amount of energy you spend can make it a lot harder to survive the night. You'll sweat, get tired and make yourself for susceptible to the cold. Props for coming through buddy.

Good thread, I'm glad that you came out alive and OK. And all the douches need to shut up with their holier than thou attitude, he recognizes that he fucked up and posted this to help prevent other people from making the same mistake. There is no use in telling him how stupid he was and how he could have killed himself and many other people, he realizes that.
