Its hard for me to type this right now, but on new years eve my brother died in a avalanche in austria. I just wanna say everyone be careful out there and never, NEVER ski alone in the bc without proper equipment. Anyway just be careful adn watch out for each other.

Get the gear, get a buddy and get trained...the backcountry is so dangerous...know what you are doing.

 
Backcountry scares the hell out of me, you definately have to respect your environment. Even the best prevention and experience isn't always enough either. Alex Lowe one of the most experience climbers in history got killed in one a few years ago, experience can only take you so far. My heart goes out to your entire family.

Hey schwags i was thinking maybe we could talk to the patrolers or management at alpental and maybe setup a memorial or something. I'm looking into a transcevier too, hopefully i can get one soon. Skiing the backcountry can be really dangerous and cant be taken too lightly I know their have been times where I've been caught in small slides and just blown it off. Everyone needs to be careful and not ski alone,and carry the proper equipment ect.

Dude...I am so sorry...you know I am here to talk some more if you need it. Anythign dude. And werd to what ryan said....I can't just blow this stuff off anymore..I am looking into getting a transciever also. Matt...I am so sorry for yours and your family's loss. Your brother was a great guy. I hope he is skiing where ever he is now :)

Hey man, i very sorry about your brother. I ski alpental and almost everytime i go up i hit the backcountry. I will definetly be more catious when i am out there now. That's suck that this had to happen to an Alpentalic.

 
All you can do now is learn from his mistake. Just make sure you dont do what he did.

Matt, I never know what to say in these kinds of situations... But I can say that in that one time that I met your brother, he struck me as a truly nice, friendly guy. He totally helped me out with where to start from the jump and stuff when I was all nervous. And afterwards when we couldn't find a couple of you guys, we sat in the lodge while he had soup and I had a muffin. He was a great person, truly genuine. I'm very sorry. And I know you have everyone on this site's support, but also know that you have mine. So call me or message me or anything anytime.

thanks for everything guys... i have just heard that 3 more deaths have taken place in the same area allready that my brother was skiing in, so really be careful with all this new snow expected soon. Always ski with other people in the Backcountry.

I can't image what you are going through right now. I have lost numerous people to cancer but its not the same. Those deaths were expected and this was not. I hope that you and your family find strength in knowing that he lost his life doing something that he loved and has gone on to ski bigger mountians with more powder days. My heart goes out to you and your family in this tough time. He will always be with you when your out skiing powder or at a party.

your brother was the person who got me to go get an avalanch tranceve. he taught me how to be safe in the BC. It is sad when people die doing something they love.

 
god..that is so sad..i feel for ya man. we need to defiantley have mandatory avy saftey courses.

i give my condolences to you :(
