i think that's just an extreme amount of lens flair. is it just in that photo or others from that day as well?

Could be a couple things, pending its not steam or fog around him, and based on that ugly ass flare, Ill say they are newton rings.. I could be wrong, but either the lens is garbage or the filter is garbage. Once again, based on that flare.. the lens is garbage.

googled it and newton rings would fit. I'd vote filter over lens. Lens is Nikon 50mm 1.8, filter is whatever was the cheapest thing on the rack.
I guess there's an odd chance that it's perspiration from him breathing in the cold? seems a little ridiculous.

I mean I even doubt it was his breath, it would be some funky ass diffraction to give you those circles off just his breath.

And its likely from that china filter you thought wold be acceptable lol take that shit off. Go buy a decent B&W UV filter, they couldnt be more than $25 for a 52mm UV. Oh and while your at it, throw that lens away too.. I swear Nikons 50mm 1.8 has to of been the worst lens Ive ever held.

Not even acceptable, just something i thought i'd throw on to give me a little "peace of mind" i guess.
for filter/Lens what do you recommend? I haven't really been in the market for a new lens, kinda stopped looking. also what filter(s) do you use?
As much crap as it is i gotta give it credit for being worth it's dollar amount.

I have a 50mm 1.8 and i hate it. But i bought it for 20 bucks on ebay, so i guess i cant really expect all that much haha. Woulda been a sick photo..

Is it a series e 50mm 1.8? I kind of doubt you picked up an af-d for $20.

And you can't go wrong with a Tiffen or B&W filter.

Regardless of your lens/ filter combo, shooting into the sun will almost always produce some amount of flair. Obviously better lens/ filters can alleviate this problem, but nothing will ever be 100%. Gotta live with it, shoot less directly at the sun and maybe buy a better lens if you're so inclined. In a case like this you're probably better off not using a filter at all. No need to add even more glass and chances of reflection in an already difficult scenario.

>implying that i don't know what lens flare is.
which leads me to believe you didn't even read the thread.

ahahaha, completely did not. sorry man. didn't look at the picture full size. it's friday afternoon, I'm in college.. I shouldn't be trying to sound intelligent. They do look a lot like Newton's rings. Either way, what I said about not adding even more glass with a filter still stands. Interference is weird.
