Europe VS North America for skiing

I find in North America skiing has lost a lot of what it should be. In Europe it's all about having fun, which was what skiing in North America was about 3 years ago. In North America its all about who has the longest tall tee? who can be the most wangster? or who can look the coolest with no skiing ability whatsoever...I think this is bullshit and kids don't know how much more fun skiing used to be before kids started checkin there 'steeze' 5 times before they went down the run. Basically in North America our sport has turned into a bunch of spoiled little rich kids who just care what they look like.

Now in Europe, wonder why there is so much talent coming out of there lately? Because people don't care so much about what they look like going down the hill and pay more attention to how good they are. There are also more parks and mountains in a denser area and usually these parks are pretty fuckin sick. With a couple Perfect jumps and a few nice rails and a killer pipe which is really all you need to get a few more tricks in your bag of em. In Europe they also have big air bags, indoor parks, water ramps, and FREE glacier access to the parks in a lot of places.

So next time you think North America has SO many better skiers than in the US and Canada think again, in 8 days in Austria last year I saw about 10 people who could easily take a lot of the 'pros' here that are coming out of the woodwork and that was just at a little mountain called Nordparc and a big one called Lech. (another reason is because a lot of people go to train in Europe, probably cause there arent so many little gangster fuckers skiign around and thinking they are the shit)

I know I am gonna get raped in the asshole by all the North Americans on here that think there the shit but take what i said with a grain of salt... maybe he could be right about all of this cause I havent been to europe?

Europe is more relaxed. I find the same thing in japan. Everyone here takes themselves so seriously and its all about who can do 1440s on their 300cm (insert name brand of core boutique ski here)'s in their 3XL gucci one-piece.

Some of the best skiers I know ride the oldest crappiest rossignol pointy skis from 15 years ago and wear carharts from work. Europes more relaxed in general. In fact, the rest of the world is.

I'd say its because we never vacation or take breaks from work but the Japanese are some of the craziest hard working people ever, yet somehow even they are maximum chill.

"In North America its all about who has the longest tall tee? who can be the most wangster? or who can look the coolest with no skiing ability whatsoever..."

If you really believe this, you must be spending far too much time on Newschoolers. The vast majority of really good skiers in North America probably don't even know what a "tall tee" or a "wangster" is.

It should also be mentioned, though, that skiing in Europe is in general even more of a fashion show than in North America.

hahaha. Wow you did you really just genralize an entire continent of skiers as Wangsters?

"Basically in North America our sport has turned into a bunch of spoiled little rich kids who just care what they look like.".

haha you do you seriously think this way? Go up to almost any Vermont mountain and look at the resident locals.. I would call them anything but a bunch of spoiled little rich kids. Also i rarly see a bunch of "wangsters" on any mountain.. Though i have never been to the West coast around the east you only see maybe 3 people with jerseys on.

You my friend are a idiot..

*continent?

It's not really that hard to ski around Europe and North America and notice trends. Sure everywhere is different, but generally the culture in one country is the same accross the entire country, especially in a tiny sport like skiing.

In Europe, the main point is that your worth park can easelly be compared to our best one. Most of the EU resorts used to not give enough money to them who would like to build a good park, so we don't have the tools to shape a huge and good looking kick. That's why we don't usualy see rookies coming out from nowhere.

(Sorry for my english, I'm French :)

dont know about that pixc. I ski at one of the better resorts in Quebec, and they have a shitload of money and their park sucked my left nut.

I want to know who those ten Austrian kids are who can destroy all the North American pros.

Well, there are none. We have a few good kids over here (especially a guy I ski with who has been skiing the park for 3 seasons, is 16 and throws cab10s octos and cab cork7en double true nose like a god), but no dumonts, tjs or carlssons.

In fact, I

the majority of people around ontario just wear "normal" jacket and pants.. nothin out of the ordinary. But you'll often get the odd two or three guys that are wearing jersey/baggy clothes. But they're always the best ones on the hill

HAHA, the dude who started this post is FUCKED up in his head.. In norway almost everyone who SUCK at skis and only do 3 and stuff have armada's an the best oakley clothes

The park isn't wrealy good, I would go 2 days to breck/keystone or something instead of 2 weeks in laax/hemsedal/åre or somethin.. And if you have been to 2 resorts in Europe you DON'T now anything. When i was in laax and a little kid broked his arm on a jump the peoples around him started laughing..

And there are so many who thinks they are cool og gangsters, 12 year old kids wearing xxxxxl and stuff..

And my english SUCKS i know

i havnt skiied north america, but i always ski europe, and from what i can tell, it is more relaxed, and yeah nobody cares about looks, accually thats not true, every kid on ns cares what they look like, but north america seems to care more, candide cares what he looks like because hes in front of the camera all the time, but apart from that, europe hasnt gone through the ''gangster'' phase that america is currently in, and ive gotta say our indoor parks are fun, they bring loads of skiiers together, everyone knows each other and just chills, its sweet and i love the way it is here

go to any good resorts up in VT and youll see nasty bark eating powder skiing locals who dont dress all flashy and are disgusting skiers.

I agree that the "attitude" is out of control, especially within the park scene. Thats what I love about places like Alta, even though they don't have a park, there is something special there. Its just about the skiing and seeing how many turns you can get in in a day. Not to prove anything but simply for the love.

i was just about to say how chill alta is

they acually put up some jibs over by wildcat this season, hayden did it.

my grandpa skis there 150 days a year almost, and he skis with all these people who do the same thing, who hike 10 minutes in and 20 out for some pow and peacefullness

Dude, YOU are the twelve year old kid who wears xxxxl oakley outerwear.

And you cant judge after continents. In Norway, like all the spoiled brats go to Hemsedal ( the nr.1 partyskiresort in Norway), and the people who dont care so much about partying go to Hafjell or Trysil

Akkurat

Sorry guys, this dude is a retard

you should call out the group directly instead of saying north americans....i've done a little skiing in my time, and i've seen some real shit. like, real dope shit by americans. other than that though, Hood River is hot as shit today.

lets think about this. Europeans have sick mountain, an abundance of snow, and insane parks compared to the east coast of the US. We have nothing compared to europeans. That makes places like New York and Pennsylvania and the midwest the ghetto of skiing. and that is why we support tall tees. Just an expression, aint like we are focused on our tall tee. You try making the most of your skiing when you are given shit and ice-if your lucky. half the winter there is no snow on the ground. for 1/4 of winter your mountain gets shut down because of rain and no snow.

I am half american half european, I have lived in LA, Boston, Brussels and Zurich.

It isn't rocket science to figure out that the USA has a larger percentage of retards compared to any other place in the world. It didn't get the nickname AMERICASTAN for nothing. This is because critical thinking is urinated upon in all aspects of American society.

BUT that does not justify generalizing all Americans into this retard bunch, as there are far too many chilled out intelligent Americans. This thread is bullshit. Because some kids like to dress in tall t's? Honestly, who gives a shit what people dress like?

I have yet to meet an american kid in tall T, who is a royal asshole like 90% of those French and Italians who roam Les 2 Alpes. That place is infested with dicks, who dress like pricks, cut everyone off, put people into danger as they snake whatever they can, have no respect, suck at riding and suck at life. There's a general courtesy and friendliness in American culture that I wouldn't just dismiss like the starter of this thread did, a courtesy that is hard  to find in popular French and Italian culture.

Sure in Switzerland/Germany/Austria... but 60-70% of the alpine resorts are in France and Italy.

from what i know i actually agree with the statement.

i have never skied in NA

if my view of north american skiing is taken solely from ns, then it seems to me that it is right to say that image is more important to people than techique and technical abiliies, it seems to me that the NA kids have a different idea of what steeze incorporates than the idea that i have.

here in europe people seem more interested and more competitive about technical abilities than image, this is certainly true of the scandies that i know and have skied with, so to me it is no suprise that they have become such a force in world skiing. Europe does have alot of people that are more interested in fashion and looks, esp in meribel, courcheval, val d, and st moritz. but i would say that the fashion conscious tend to have not much interest in newschool skiing

your images of north america are soooo corrupted. Im not dissing you but you gotta realize, We call out people for being posers. A poser is a person who wears all the dope shit, has good skis, and they suck ass at skiing. If you arent real and your sportin that shit you get ripped on hard, or atleast where im from. I have never been to a place where they care more about what they look like than skiing abilities. that is just a rediculous statement. You can look good while skiing or be into the fashion of it, but in no way do those people care more about their image than their skiing ability.

poser is more of a personality. Your friend sounds like he is out there for the fun of the sport, for himself. A poser is out there because its cool and they wanna look cool doing it. Im sorry if i offended you, i didnt elaborate enough. But the main thing behind it is, why do you spend 1500 in gear that you dont need, and possibly makes your skiing worse because it isnt designed for you? thats the deal with posers. Their heart isnt there, and neither is their mind. Just because you ski 1 day a week doesnt make you a poser, some posers ski alot. The question is, is your friend absorbed with his image? there is a difference in buying the best gear for image and buying the gear because it works for you and its something you enjoy

Agreed. Plus, Everyone knows that if you are steezy.. Then you are a good skier.

You don't become steezy wearing good clothes...

AAAAAAND. Don't dis NA.

(Dis people in a specific area who suck and think they are black when, in actuality, they are not.)

(im not generalizing black people and their style... you all know what i mean there right) ? sorry for those people who may be upset right now ... lol

dude i total agree with u i live in ny and people dont care wat they look like. NO one dress like gansters or anything u might have the occasional few but there not that good most the time.the best skiers are poor and have devoted there lives to skiing.

Come to Les Deux Alpes right now, the attitude in the park is ridiculous, the park is amazing but about 80% of people are wearing xxxl jersey's, tall tee's and bandana's. So As far as being fashion orientated then unfortunatley Europe is like America also.

Ive done 3 seasons in Europe and 1 in Australia and from I see its a variety of people that feel the need to "be gangster" up a mountain. I lived in a place called Morzine last season which is in a place called the port du soleil. This area is one of the biggest in the world, it has about 200 lifts and covers part of France and Switzaland.

I lived with about 30 other Brits and I was amazed at how many would walk around with their trousers around the ankles talking a load of shit. It does have to be said that it was moslty boarders.

It does my head in to see Brits wearing a load of Yank gear thinking its cool. Its good to look good and I dont give a fuck what you look like as long as your not a prick.

Oh and in Eurpoe you get some of the best all in ones, propper retro!!

it's not necessarily europe vs. north america. there are lots of places in NA where you barely have any posers and it's just downright nice, it's just that most aren't newschool but more big-mountain type places. i find that usually there's so much less attitude at places like alpental, bridger, alta, a basin, etc. because if you pose and can't back it up on the hill you aren't just humiliated but you could get screwed up by the mountain in the process.

europe seems like it is much more relaxed, just judging by it's bc access rules and what i've heard. especially la grave.

I've skied at like 12 places in Europe by the way, I just skied at 2 places last time for the entire week.

and as for the skiers, I skied with Russ Henshaw and a couple of his aussie buddies at nordparc and they were all throwing like switch cork 9 true noses off a 70 foot booter, then there were also those other people like the europeans from rage films tobi somethin? something were there and were throwin the most styled out shit ever.

I wasnt trying to generalize the shit out of it, i was just trying to get across that its much more relaxed over in europe and most places are like ALTA opposed to here where we have a lot of 'g-unit banging' places

this thread is shit

you give an opinion against you north americans and you all go fucking mental,

chill out, its only an opinion

It seems ironic that you are claiming that North America is not "chill"

while at the same time judging an entire group of people as being

assholes because they wear tall-T's. That seems pretty "not-chill" to

me.

I didnt judge an entire nation as 'not chill' there is a lot of chill kids in north america... such as the ones i ski with all of the time... im just saying that it seems that there is a lot more 'chill' kids skiing over in Europe cause they dont seem to care as much and there much more relaxed.

Right, and I think it's ironic that you cared enough about what other

people looked like to use kid's wearing tall-t's as an example for why

they are not chill. It's possible to care about your appearance and still be a relaxed person. I don't think wearing baggy clothes has much, if any, of a correlation to how relaxed a person is or why they are skiing.

I don't know if kids in Europe are more

relaxed or not, I've never skied there... but I rarely run into skiers

that are dicks, anywhere. In fact I can't think of the last time I talked to

someone in the park and went away thinking "wow that guy needs to

relax". People just wanna have fun, ya know?

europe is all about the enviroment. its fun to experience new cultures. Asking for a lift ticket in a different language is fun.

It gets expensive with the exchange rate. but well worth it just to have that memory of skiing in europe.

In north america the only memorys you can remember are those epic powder days or that funny thing your friend did.

Sorry for 'generalizing' a whole entire continent i mean i've just seen these types of kids at tremblant, fortune, st marie, st anne, mont avila, sauveur, stoneham, stowe, smuggs, blue mtn, whiteface, waterville, sunday river, park city, mt hood, whistler, blackcomb, big white, mammoth, june mtn etc.

and ive seen a lot of cool kids in places like nordparc, laax, lech, st anton, schlick 2000, tignes, axamer lizum, snowpark, mayrhofen, perisher, cortina, stubai gletscher etc... so wow i guess im really not 'generalizing' two entire continents when i've skied at most of the places
