Europe Skiing

I'm a college kid studying in Rome next semester. You can bet ur ass that my gear's comin with me, since the alps are a train ride away. I was wondering if anyone knows of the "must ski" places in the alps, preferably in Italy, since that'd be a little closer. Best for off-piste/backcountry? Best park? Best pipe? Also, any cheap hostels?

ITALY has some great skiing dude. Courmayeur (Aosta valley) has some awesome terrain and the other resorts in that valley are good too, La Thuile has a link to France and La Rosiere which is cool.

Madonna di Campignilio is a huge area and has some good skiing. Monterosa Ski area has some epic terrain. Cervinia has an ok park and is linked to zermatt which has a very good park and good terrain.

Livigno might be the best park in Italy, sponsored by Burton I think.

ALPS OVERALL

The rest of the Alps are huge, so you'll have to plan when you get there judging on snow conditions etc. Laax, Avoriaz, Les Crosets (superpark.ch), Les Deux Alpes and Silvretta Nova are some of the best parks and the list of good big mountain resorts is endless and depends on snow.

Verbier, Val d'Isere/Tignes, La Grave, Chamonix, Engelberg, Andermatt, Arlberg and many more are the most popular big mountain destinations but as I say, the oppurtunities are endless.

I would reccommend pming michael_bc for in depth knowledge and lesser-known areas.

Have a sick time :)

i would say from the mountains ai´ve ridden in the alps my list is this,in france-swiss PORTES DU SOLEI this huge amazing mountain in between the 2 countries, 14 stattions al toghether with one lift ticket, epic

also St ANTON in alberg and Mayrhofen y zillertal (austria both) are probably one of the best mountain u can be in europe quote, mayrhofen has the best park in europe.

Livingno (italy) the best park with mayrhofen.

but any big mountain form austria, france or switzerland would be great.

otrher epic to name, silvretta nove (austria) la plagne (france) le 3 valleys (france)

hope u can go to any of thiss cause they´re amazing

Les Trois Vallees is one of the largest interconnected ski areas in the world if I recall correctly. It's straight up massive.

I've been there in the summer and it's insanely huge. I mountain biked there back in '99.

three valleys is huge, but i wouldn't reccommend it. poor snow record, lack of fun terrain, poor parks comparitevly and super expensive.

hay im an alaskan stuck in holland for a school year and i was thinking of going to germany for the winter break. but i have no idea were to go. can someone help me?

thanks

Where in Holland are you staying? Have you checked out the indoor slopes? They have some nice parks to have some fun on the weekends.

And about Germany, I would drive down to Austria if I were you. I can recommend The Zillertal (Mayrhofen), Silvretta Nova for park and of course St. Anton if you wanna go shred some pow!

i am staying in Groningen. no i didnt even think of indoor skiing. i will look at it. i am trying to go as cheep as possible. but thanks for you help. are u in europe?

go to switzerland. i used to live there and it is the best.. id say best area to go is grisons, graubunden in german, anyways.. thats just like 100% ski resorts, laax, davos, st. moriz.. tons of good stuff.. but there is good stuff every where.. graubunden is fairly close to the italian border thoguh.  there is also skiing in italy obviously, but. i dono i like switz.

stuck in holland, pwa, holland rocks. except that its totally flat. you can fly anywhere in europe for fairly cheap though, go to sweden or switzerland.

the best park and pipe area in Europe is at Laax in switzerland... the best big mountain is probably at La Grave and the surrounding resorts, I believe it was a favourite of Doug Coombes (R.I.P).. there is good freeride in lots of resorts though but also lots of glacier skiing so watch yourself..

uh no davos is in switzerland,it is expensive, but there is good night life and bc. lame for park/. but fuck if your a park rat, laax is the place to go.

It's amazing the amount of bullshit that is posted in this type of threads. If you don't know what you're talking about: shut up.

Davos is in Switzerland, not Austria.

Davos is most definitely not gay, it has some of the best snow records in the alps and the snow is really light.. It's not too far from St. Anton so it has similar conditions. The amount of mountains that are lift accessed from Davos is ridiculous. Davos pisses all over most of the resorts mentioned in these threads.

ANYWAY.. ROME.

Rome has some local mountains, don't forget to check them out.

"Best for off-piste/backcountry?"

Alagna (Monte Rosa Ski)

makes La Grave look like a bunny hill, and without the 1 million gapers coming there. It's huge, and pretty much freeride-only.

Best park?

Livigno

The cheapest from Holland is to go with one of the budget skiing organizations.

www.sportura.nl

www.husk.nl

Most Dutch people go to Mayrhofen (there's a cheap train deal that takes you there). Mayrhofen is pretty sick. Or you can go to Mayrhofen with Saiko, they offer really sick trips www.saiko.nl

There are also cheap flights to Innsbruck.

solden in the austrian Otztal is also said to be good,

and another rather secret place is arolla in switzerland no big corduroy planes, but heli-skiing in the most beautiful parts of the alps, definately worth a look if you're more into backcountry andnot pipe 'n park
