jim carrey creates an evil machine that makes the sun always remain in the sky, and then it takes all the spots off peoples minds.

'Carrey stars as Joel Barish, a weary Manhattan wage slave who wakes up one winter morning, calls in sick and takes a train out to a beach in Montauk, on Long Island. Something draws him there; maybe the same thing that draws him to Clementine Kruczynski (a never-better Kate Winslet), a free spirit with dyed blue hair -- she calls it 'Blue Ruin' -- whom he meets on the train home. These polar opposites feel a connection they can't explain.

So Kaufman gradually fills us in. Without giving too much away, let's just say that Joel and Clementine have both had all memories of their two-year relationship erased. She had the process done first, having seen a TV ad for a company called Lacuna in which Dr. Howard Mierzwiak (the invaluable Tom Wilkinson) asks, 'Why remember a destructive love affair?' Joel, hurt by her actions, follows suit. In his apartment, on the night before the train trip, Dr. Mierzwiak's assistants Stan (Mark Ruffalo), Patrick (Elijah Wood) and Mary (Kirsten Dunst) attach the weird headgear and zap the recollections one by one, the most recent first. It's a botch job, mostly because Patrick splits to make a play for Clementine (he has stolen Joel's memories), and Stan and Mary strip down to get stoned and boogie. '

Mr. Cranky's Review

Warning: If you don't like spoilers, don't read this post.

-The Eternal Sunshine of...fuck it, too long.-

Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) is a colossal loser. Now, it's not like we have a lot to go on from director Michel Gondry's film, but it's pretty easy to extrapolate when he first meets Clementine (Kate Winslet) that's he's a loser. He doesn't know how to talk to her. He can't make eye contact. He doesn't know what to do.

Fortunately for Joel, Clementine is a freak and doesn't react like a normal woman would in Joel's presence, which is run as far away as possible. Instead, she jumps into a relationship with him. When that turns into a disaster, she goes to the Lacuna Corporation to have her memory of Joel wiped clean. When Joel decides he can't live with the pain, he does the same.

This is a conveniently linear explanation of a movie that is all over the place, flashing forward and backward, much like the inside of the loser's brain as he remembers this and that, in the past and in the present. Joel consults with Lacuna's founder, Dr. Howard Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson). Dr. Mierzwiak sends two of his technicians, Stan (Mark Ruffalo) and Patrick (Elijah Wood), to wipe Joel's memory. While they're doing that, their office clerk, Mary (Kirsten Dunst), shows up. As they're talking, Joel has this big, metal helmet on his head and he can sort of hear them as he's going through his memories and they're being erased. Of course, one wonders in a medical procedure of this delicacy, why the effect of the patient's surroundings wasn't taken into consideration.

But no matter. That last point is needlessly picky. What makes this film close to unwatchable is the chaotic direction of Gondry, who apparently feels that he has to add a certain level of wackiness to Charlie ('Adaptation') Kaufman's script, which is sort of like pouring a couple teaspoons of sugar in your Coke for added flavor.

This is a far better idea than it is an actual film. The idea revolves around our fascination with the nostalgia of relationships. Why do we usually focus our memories on only the best moments of bad or mediocre relationships? It's not so much that this is a bad idea as Gondry just drives the point right into the ground, repeating the theme over and over again with his ridiculous mish-mash of stylistic extravagance.

If a procedure like the one in the movie actually existed, I probably would have had my memory erased the second I stepped out of the theater.

I saw it on friday, and saw it again today. Its really good. I had no idea what it was about going in to it friday, which made it so much better. I figured it wouldn't be as good the second time either, but it was only better.

Theres just so many little things throughout the entire movie, and kate winslet is hot too, so thats a plus.

Dont worry, its a controlled slide.

i also really like how the entire film was filmed with handheld cameras (versus tripod, etc).

it made it much more like you were inside the movie, like a fly on the wall just watching it, rather than the entire movie being acted out or presented for a camera.

the guy who made this also made being john malcovich and adapation, i have yet to see being john but adapation was a great movie so i think this will be really good as well

^DAMN! Foiled. Oh well... by the way, to whoever it was above, Being John Malkovich is a better movie than this one and Adaptation combined. Wierd as fuck though.

yeah ti was so sweet. I tmade you think for sure. I think i need to see it like 2 mor etiem sin order to fully understand it. I also really liked the handheld feel the movie had.

(trust me, the '' things aren't actually there)

i just saw it today. it was amazing. defintely going to be one of my all time favorites. it was so trippy the way they did some of those scenes. it was sweet how they were running and hiding in other memories. and at the end with the house falling apart, that was cool. like everyone else has said, it just makes you think about a lot of stuff. i suggest anyone who hasn't seen it should check it out. i'm going again as soon as i can.

I thought it was excellent, very well put together.

better to burn out...

...then fade away

oh man there's so much to say about this movie. i showed up ten minutes late and was bummed, but then i figured out what i missed cause of how they movie goes. i love it.

i was really impressed with Carey's performance in the film. up till this movie i had only seen him playing outrageous roles talking out of his ass or making lots of strange sounds with his mouth, but after about seeing this movie, i really realize that he is an extremely talented actor and is capable of stirring up emotions much more than just laughter.

i've seen alot of great movies in my time, and id say this is easily one of my faviorates. dramatic, yet at the same time it had moments that were so funny i almost cried

many critics in the papers are bashing this movie, saying that its too complicated, makes them think too much and dawdles along with an unsuccessful story presentation and point. I say screw them -they are the ones that praise every cookie cutter movie that comes along that is pure entertainment only and doesnt give you anything new or interesting to chew on.. and i hate that. Focus Features has been putting out nothing but excellent films lately, films that stir up your emotions and keep you interested with a stories that are refreshingly unfamiliar. Anyone who said this film and any other film Focus puts out is garbage then i question what kind of boring, uninspired people they are. Im not trying to put anyone down here but i hate when critics scorn at a movie that breaks away from the hollywood mold and gives you something amazing that no other film from any big production house could do (except for searchlight). So, Im looking forward to each new film that Focus puts out.. i havent been let down yet.

I dunno, I thought it was craziness and 'well done,' but in the end a little too much thinking required. It seemed to follow that new 'trend' I'm seeing in Hollywood where big names are trying to make the 'abstract' 'art-sy' shit with a crappy camera and crappy editing that is supposed to be deep. Some stuff was really funny, some stuff was fucked up. At the time though I was also drugged up after having my wisdom teeth removed, so that could have affected my view. HOWEVER! Too mooch thinkin. Best line in the movie was a minute in though, where he is picking through the sand with a stick and just says, 'sand is overrated.' classic.

We'll have you dead pretty soon.

well, thats the type of movie it was. you're supposed to think after you see it, thats one of the reasons its such a great movie

^^ to much thinking... haha... im stoked that americas youth is so deep... go watch 'waking life' then talk to me about deep
