EMO

At the drive in...emo?!

If emo's what you want, go for chiodos, from first to last, scary kids scaring kids, saosin or thursday...thats where its at

emo's are such fags. i cant even comprehend what the fuck they are trying to express... so fucking dirty, don't let those fucks play in a band they deserve nothing

im suprised people on this site know emo bands. why do u listen to it? it doesnt pump u up just makes u wanna like hate life and cut sheep or something. and having sweet long black hair over one eye is pretty ill if u ask me. i iike tight black pants as well as long as there is a metal chain connected and some sweet black converse shoes!

im nto sure if that was sarcastic or not

however.alot of it does pump you up...of course not the emo that your thinking about "gay acoustic guy complaining"

but post hardcore screamo is so primming its unbeliavble...

some emo is good because its very near to melodic punkrock which i like. but for me its about the music, not about beeing emo or something. as long as its good music the genre doesnt matter at all

congrats bitch. you posted 3 times in an emo thread COMPLAINING. wow someone really has alot of problems. sounds like you are pretty "emotional" especially about your music...and all 3 posts refrence homosexuality...

fucking emo shit.

man this emo bashing is crazy. I'm not emo, but if someone is I dont care, and either should you guys. Its like emo bashing is just a trend here, I bet if Tanner Hall became emo all of a sudden, a bunch of you would too. So basically what Im trying to say is dont hate someone cuz they dress a certain way or listen to a certain type of music.

yo A Dawg. simple plan is sooooooooooooo good!!!!!!! i love them sOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!! they are sooo hardcore!!!

Ok. Let me address two things i have seen in this thread:

1. Coheed and Cambria are in no way shape or form emo. If you want to argue this, i will

2. At The Drive In is not even remotely close to being emo

3. Emo was started by The Cure, and Oingo Boingo... only recently did that faggot, emaciated, girl-pant wearing, ugly hair-cut sporting genre really pick up.

emo wasnt started by the cure at all. emo emerged during the 1980s from punkrock and hardcore. the cure is about 10 years older.

and at the drive-in kinda reinvented emo/emocore. they are one of the main influences

I bet most of you stupid fucking idiots have never even heard real emo before. Quit hateing you ignorant pieces of shit.

let the kid listen to what he wants freely ... all he wanted to know were some good emo bands ... i like the cure

at the drive in (r.i.p) are so far from emo its a joke. theyr are a fuckin mad outfit. legends.

true emo is like taking back sunday. they are about the only decnt emo band out there. and that other bloke who called thursday enmo can get f'd.

p.s fuck emos

why is everyone COMPLAINING about emo's here? emos complain about everything, and you are an emo.

Anyway i like Bright eyes. fevers and mirrors are a great album

what does urbandictionary's finest scholors have to say about that matter. (yes i realize im an idiot for spelling scholors wrong and it is a hilarious irony)

"Emo" is not short for "Emotional." "Emo" does not mean Taking Back Sunday and Dashboard Confessional, despite what MTV has lead you to believe in the last few years. "Emo" is not sidebangs, tight pants, and male vocalists who sing like little girls about their failed relationships. "Emo" is not the use of diluted, meaningless metaphors and similes such as "My arms are like pinecones," and most definitely is not the rampant use of words such as "autumn," "heart," "knife," "bleeding," "leaves," and "razorblade."

I just thought I'd clear that up after all of these "definitions" in which I have encountered an unbelievable amount of people who try to pass off their blatantly false pretenses as fact, and are slowly infecting others with their high-horse, holier-than-thou bullshit. Because honestly, with your ridiculous definitions, Beethoven, George Gershwin, and Britney Spears are/was "emo bands."

Now, onto the real definition.

In the early 90s there was a movement in the hardcore genre that came to be known as "Emotive Hardcore," spearheaded by Rites Of Spring. Harder-core-than-thou kids, who swore by Dischord Records a la Minor Threat, actually coined the term "Emo" as something of a put-down for the kids who really liked Rites Of Spring, Indian Summer and this new wave of "Emotive" Hardcore bands. That's right, "Emo" was once not something kids called themselves. The field exploded outwards from there - Level-Plane Records has always been the most famous Emo label. Acts like Yaphet Kotto, I Hate Myself, Saetia, Hot Cross, A Day In Black And White, Funeral Diner, I Would Set Myself On Fire For You, You And I, and hosts of others came in the next decade. Most emo bands have since broken up, but there's still the occasional hold-out (again, the majority of Level-Plane Records' roster has been a procession of emo acts). Like most DIY hardcore/punk of the time, a majority found its way onto vinyl and not much else. Some people consider bands like Fugazi, and later Sunny Day Real Estate, a progression of emo, but personally, I don't quite follow that philosophy.

Often, more recently, this gets intertwined with post-hardcore, and understandably so - that's nothing to make an issue of, since well shit, at least it's close.

Since the late 90s, though, bands have been emerging in the vein of Taking Back Sunday, Dashboard Confessional, and the thousands of their clones. As far as I can tell, some lazy journalist somewhere, writing an article about them, decided "Well, fuck, no one knows what emo is anyways, so I'll call these bands "emo" - sounds more appealing than bubblegum pop rock..." and the spiral continued downwards into the current amalgomation of bands MTV has told everyone is "emo."

Somehow, people decided that "emo" meant "emotional," which is obviously bullshit, as 99% of bands make music to illicit emotion, which would make "emotional" a completely all-encompassing genre from classical to opera to pop to rap.

Hope that helps.Taking Back Sunday, Senses Fail, and My Chemical Romance falls under the "horrible pop rock" genre, not the emo genre.

Rites of Spring is emo.

interesting

i never knew fuck all of what u said so i am enlightened

what i would like to say is emo has become more a culture than a genre, and even if the music that these emos listen to isnt actually the real definition of emo (as you have just stated), the majority of people understand it to be emo. So i think you could say emo music has a different image now, even if it isnt the true style of emo music, because everyone is always going to relate bands like taking back sunday and senses fail to being emo. and im interested to ask your opinion on this one skogenjake, are Thursday emo? and by emo i mean 'horrible pop rock'? cuz i sure as fuckin hell dont rekon they are

dude didnt you read? thats just what i took from urban dictionary. not my personal beliefs...i wouldnt waste my time typing all that. i may have stated what i think in one of the other 10000 emo threads... and dont care enough to find it and paste it here...

thursday? emo? i dont know i dont listen to them. i also dont care enough to brand music a certain type. it doesnt make any difference to me what its called. its not worth it to try to classify because in the rock scene, someone wont like you definetion. like ok thursday...hmm they are like a pop punk rock alternative new punk revial emo fusion hardcore emocore type of band. you see the point im trying to make? that it doesnt make any difference either way, there really is no point. right well i guess those are my views. what i posted above was some lame ass who is probably 37 years old, works at office depot and spends alot of his paycheck at vintage record stores in the "indie section". i enjoy pretty much all types of music. i think its because i appreciate the music for what its worth. sounds like bs, but at least i understand myself.

check out my thread where i posted that huge emo lowdown, that'll answer all your questions...

but aside from that, you guys (with a few exceptions) have no idea what the fuck you're on about, for example, at the drive-in are post-hardcore, not emo

download I must be Emo, i have no idea who sings it, but then you will understand why people are treating you like garbage.

taking back sunday, mcr, the used, ect... even if you dont call them emo they are still gay and play sad and depressing music, hence why they are gay. emo is gay and so are those other bands.

i highly agree with you..

emo has change dinto the image of silly ass gayness such as mcr dashboard the used headly all those terrible pop punk bands.

however im into alot of post hardcore bands that i would not classify as emo but alot of people would.

on the other hand to answer your question

thursday is neither hardcore neither emo..their oldschool and extremly talented their somewhat screamo. i have their 3 exclusive cds from before they were big and their compeltly amazing.

and now since you seem liek you know your music..

what would you classify

At the drive in

the mars volta

as?

dude i didnt say they were either. i already answered that. it was from urban dictionary as i said like 3 times. not my opinion.

wow you guys are all fucking lame...i'm sure you've had feelings, so you're emo. I'm sure you all have problems with something in your life, if you don't then there is something wrong with you. Some people choose to cry about it, BIG FUCKING DEAL! let everyone be happy with what they want to do. If someone wants to get a silly hair cut and where their girlfriends pants, let them. If you guys want to listen to what ever you listen too, thats great, congrats on the fact you like something. Do what ever the hell you want and quit being a fucking 12 year old about people... grow up a little bit and you'll see that some emo kids aren't that bad. Ok i'm done with that.

Thursday, Coheed, Emery, all those bands i'm seeing aren't emo at all as far as we know what emo is or what MTV has said. Most of you are right, you aren't going to find many good emo bands because they aren't many left. But Screamo is close enough, so you'll like Thursday, Emery is one of the best out right now, UNDERoath is very respectable. Tooth and Nail and Solid State records have some of the best bands out right now. So if you go there and check out some of those bands you'll find something good. Also check out who your favorite bands are touring with and have toured with, that'll help you out to find good bands too.

Ok, I'm done with that.

It doesnt matter if its real emo or fake emo or queer emo whatever, if you listen to it your a fag, thus the term emo fag. Emo sucks, drop some balls, listen to some good music. And if you are in doubt, I am sure In Utero or Appetite for Destruction will suffice.
