Emo? ghetto? rasta? blahblahblahblahblah...go skateboarding.

Skateboarding is and will always be the most progressive freestyle sport. what do you need to skateboard? a board, and a street. it can be done anywhere at anytime. Its a whole lifestyle. The reason skiing will never be anywhere close to what skateboarding is, well lets think about it. Where can u ski? the mountains, your backyard, or maybe a handrail. Skateboarding is just infinitley more creative and theres more people that do it because all you need is 50 bucks and you can start. Also nobody cares what your wearing when you skate because your just focused on the board it self. Skiing you have a super slow shot of a jump and someone hitting it so what stands out? what there wearing. If ski videos ever want to become like skateboarding they need to change from having a cool artistic shot or a cool shot slowed down to super fast paced shots where your focused on the tricks. thats why i like filming park with follow cams and a wide angle because all you look at really is what trick their doing not what they look like

this post had no planning and if u disagree say why

i agree with this so much. i think a whole video with follow cams would be amazing. no steady shots at all would be really cool

I can think of a Bike movie that makes we want to do that..... either ROAM or The Collective. Its people cruising on scenic singtletrack and just having fun. Its overall an awesome movie and every time i see it, ill stop halfway through an go riding. Sometimes even in winter. Its just awesome

idk wtf your talking about. Skiers are so friendly while skaters have different groups and aren't willing to meet new people.

I go skiing and i talk to every kid in the park on twin tips regardless of what there wearing, how good they are, or age. Everyone at my mountain that skis knows eachother. Everytime im at my mountain i see familiar faces and skis. Ill go alone and end up skiing with a huge crowd of people. I'll go up and say hi to twenty-year-olds throwing cork 7s and little groms learning to slide a box. Every skier on twins seems nice and friendly.

However, I head to the skatepark with a few friends and everyone has their own click. it ranges from the really good 18/19 year olds hitting the biggest feature to the little 8-9 year olds hitting the little ramp. People know eachother within their group but I never see various ages and levels talking with eachother.

guns and roses hasn't seen bikecar, has he?

boarding film that'll make you want to slash n'spray. SO HARD.

smiles to a nice thread!

let me put it this way, kids like dudes like blake nyman just because of his clothes. Look past the clothes kids! No grab cab 7s and haggard shifites onto rails - he does tricks that almost every little skier can bust with thier eyes closed.

Im not hating on the dude, hes a talented kid and its not his fault he blew up because of fashion.

The attitudes are lame too, surface wont hook anyone up who doesn't wear tight pants whereas companies like baker 3 and toy machine sponsor and hype non tight trousered skaters.

fuck pants, make your skiing itself stand out and ill give some credit when its due.

and yeah zero and jamie thomas's black box regime forces tight pants on everyone but they get called out hard for it and only still exist because of west 49 shopping studded belt motley crue shirt wearing hesh dooooods

-He blew up because he was, and still is, doing original tricks. His clothes just bring out his creativity. There's a reason kids say "that guy pulls off tight pants".

-What's wrong with no grabs? I say, fuck tweaks.

-Surface had Becker on their team (admittedly, he's on Ninth now)...he doesn't wear tight pants.

-Baker 3 is not a company.

- since when are flaily shifties original?

- it's not his no grabs that make his style bad, i've seen amazing no grabs, it's his general crazy arm and body movements in the air. refer to tanner, mickael, honeywell, heed and alex balsen for real style

- becker was on surface for like, 2 months? if they were so down with him being among their tight pant crew why would he quit or get dropped or whatever happened?

- don't bring up peoples mistakes like they know nothing, obviously he fucking knows baker 3 isn't a company it was a fucking typo, this also makes your whole argument a joke seeing as you are desperately looking for points to prove him wrong

I made a typo, i was watching the movie and it kinda just came out like that. 20 minutes ago i would have said baker 2g haha

his tricks arent original, tom wallisch even does shifty 7s bigger and cleaner.

kids say he pulls off tight pants because they like tight pants, anyone i see riding around hunchback with thier ass sticking out and thier tight jeans pulled all the way up around thier nipples doesnt really tickle my fancy.

i wonder why becker is off the team?

please picture nyman without the clothes and tell me if he would be where he is today if he was doing those tricks wearing an oakley medic.

then tell me if reyolds would be where he is today if he was wearing a ghetto gown

kthxbi

I've seen this sort of thing being said a few times before in other threads and ignored it.

I can't ignore it.

If so many people can do those sort of cool tricks, why won't they? To busy getting the tweak perfect on their octo?

Please show me a shifty two by Candide Thovex! Please show me a switch no grab seven by Peter Olenick! Please show me a nollie non lip tail danish by Simon Dumont! Please show me a nose to tail press danish by Andreas Hatveit! Please show me a no grabbed late one by Charles Gagnier!

I just don't see it.

only worthy tricks you listed

consequently, can you show me blake doing any of these tricks?

only a couple kids out there on that program, judging by the newman icon im guessing your thinking chris. Hes got those tricks and got shut down by basically everyone including surface for sponsorship and he slays those kids.

skiing is fucked.

no i got the point that we shouldnt hate on eachother for whatever reason i just felt like voicing my opinion on a movie that someone brought up and i hope that Ali gets better no harm done there

Alright...I shouldn't have called him out for the Baker mistake. I regret it...let's get it out of the way and move on.

I still believe that Blake Nyman's success is because of his creativity. Back when his Youtube videos were posted, most kids had not seen anything like it. And as for the present, we haven't seen much recent footage to my knowledge.

As for the rest of the Surface team, I guess they'll have to prove themselves in the upcoming video.

sadly, i have yet to see bikecar...ive wanted to, but no one has it! lames!!

as for those of you who say skateboarders dont get along, and skiers do...i dont know where you skateboard or ski at. ive been skating and skiing all over the country (granted, ive stayed clear of the midwest...no disrespect guys, but a ski trip to michigan is far from the top of my list) and ive witnessed pretty much the same thing everywhere. i went to arizona to skate a couple months back, during that horrid heat wave we had here on the east coast earlier this year. the cultural diversity is really unbelievable over there...i was a minority being white. yet i still found myself skating with a total thugged out mexican kid with cornrows who was killing it, us communicating with one another with his broken english and my far-from-perfect spanish. that really made the trip for me, the fact that skating was able to bring a language barrier like that.

its the same way around here. massachusetts has a rather large spanish-speaking population, so we find ourselves skating with them pretty often. everyone gets along, regardless of the cultural distance between us. incidentally, there must be something in the water in lowell, cos the kids coming out of that town are mind blowing.

ive found in skiing that you dont even need to speak a different language for people to not talk to you for the most part. at park city last year, for example, i was skiing, wearing tight pants because that is the style i prefer, being a skateboarder. no one said a word to me, all i got was bad vibes and dirty looks from the mess of snotty little kids in their xxl garb. its just immature.

as far as the surface argument, i can understand, it might not be that cool for them to only sponsor tight pants wearers. however, skateboarding was very much like this in the late 1990s. there was the zero punk rock studded belt scene, the hippies over at supernaut (anyone remember that company??), the thugged out aesthetics/city stars squad...it took a while to mature into what it is. surface is creating a diversity in skiing that is going to help it mature to that level, a step that the majority of teams seem to have no intent, or desire, to do.

This is a great thread. I'll throw in my $.02

I think a lot of the attitude you recieve from other skiers can vary from place to place and your personality. I've always had great experiences in meeting people in the park whether its at home or when on trips. There definitely are a couple of kids at every hill who either think their too cool for school and won't talk to anyone outside of their crew. You'll get this with skateboarding too, its just the way people operate.

I find you get a lot of these little cliquey crews in the areas with a ton of skiers. When people can have their own friends who all ski and don't have to venture outside that clique to find someone to ride with. I've found there are a ton of these cliques in Whistler and Blue Mountain, both areas with a large skier base. I still have been able to meet great people when skiing in these areas.

On the other hand, one of the hills I used to ski at in Nova Scotia was extremely cliquey. It was a fairly small hill where everyone knew everyone else and when "foreigners" came into the scene, they generally are not accepted.

Skiing, Snowboarding and Skateboarding are all fashion shows. Everyone seems to want to rep a certain scene. That's fine, it's just part of the sport. It's funny, I'm in Banff right now and there are a crew of guys who live across the road who are "core" snowboarders. They revile guys who buy a ton of new gear or rock a specific style. These are the type of guys with filthy pants duct taped together who sport a grungy beard. They take pride in what they believe snowboarding actually is and in doing so, sport a specific scene as well. Irony is funny.

skateboarding is past the whole fashion show thign for the most part, now its skiing and snowboardings turn to be in that stage.

One more Surface thing.

Becker still rides Surface Live Life's to this day...literally, this week!! He also rides Line Elizabeths and some nintward skis too. His name is on the 9ward site as a team member but he is not on their "team" - he took a pair of skis from them for free, just like they do to just about everyone. These facts are straight from the source.

Becker harldly even skied this year, snowboarded mostly...

Surface is rad. The Chocolate film is rad...skiing is rad. I just wish people would be more "open armed" to new opinions and styles. That's all it is.

Whatever though.

...I guess Surface is doing a little short film right now, comparable to the Hot Chocolate film. Hopefully it will be a good little edit. Only thing I know is that it's called "Distribution in Japan"

I want to see more of Jordan Seldin too (Surface kid)

theres nothing wrong with new companies trying to bring fresh ideas into skiing, the sport needs more of it to grow and move on. however, it should be about the skis and the people not the clothes and the scene. ski movies dont have that crew feel that skate movies have with different riders getting stoked on each rider's individual style, and different bag of tricks. skiiers find a style of riding that they are down with and tend to shred with like minded people deeming anything beyond thier realm of comprehension whack or easy. skiing needs to become more aware of the personalities involved in the sport and less about whether its cooler to wear burton shit or tight pants.

i agree, it would be really cool to see a ski video use the same concepts that a skate video would use, with tours and whatnot. but its tough to do ski demos, which is definitely a major part of those vids.

ill be looking forward to the surface video...those guys seem to be on the right wavelength as far as where skiing should go.

Thanks for the compliment!

Our edit will be pretty small, not really a ski film...but hopefully turns out decent and is fun to watch.

p.s.

I wear baggy pants.

i think the skiiers that skateboard are the ones that get along with everyone, cuz they know that it dsnt matter what u wear, thru skateboarding. i skateboard and ski and i ski with a shitload of kids, tight pants, tight pink pants.. haha and fuckin baggysteez kidsit don matta its awll gooood maan

so what your saying is skiing needs some variety when it comes to style... (in terms of what you where, how you ski, etc.) and unfortunatly your complaining to the wrong industry. There are only so many ski clothing companies when there are thousands of clothing manufacturers. so what I'm trying to say is, this sport of skiing is young and it will have to grow a lot before it can reach the level that skateboardings at. The other this is... a lot of the big name skiers grew up together and live together so many are pretty similar not to mention that a lot of them ride for the same companies and rep the same stuff.

Nevertheless, Im not disagreeing with your point becuase I thinks it legit, but I think that you can't really criticize it either. What your looking at is a massive sport that has a lot of really talented people involved, and once you become good enough, people can't hate on what you wear or where your from. and as I said earlier, skiing hasn't reached this point...yet. and as far as the kids hating on each other. In every sport you will have insecure posers hating on eachother and your just gonna have to get used to that. well, i doubt you actually read all this but if you did, happy birthday

By the way, after reading this entire thread this was the most intelligent statement I could come up with besides "that's what she said".

this is a really legit rant, i totally agree that people in skiing need to have more of a commradary like that of skating, in skiing you can;t really just go to another mountain and start rinding with the crew there, instead they almost seem to try to push you anway, whereas if you go skate a new park all the locals are going to be super supportive... we definately need to reach that level.

Good thred, skateboarding is the standard. Good post as well. All the styles blending together progress the sport.

just ride in what you feel like wearing, no one can tell you how to dress

just dont be a follower

personally i love just skiing around slowly and just throwin 180s and stuff, its the funnest part about skiing. and mark i personally dig your style and the way you ski, i saw you at waterville once this year. i love skateboarding too, im not good enough to tre flip or anything, all i do is just roll. but still, i feel the same comeradery between skateboarders, and the same hater vibe between skiiers. i have no explanation for why. chill!

peace coast!

people just need to ride, share the wealth and love, keep  skiing alive and not get into too big. I love how skiing is underground, if it goes to mstream it would open more possibilties but ruin alot of the aspects. thats just me though

like niobody even thought about skiiing as a sport like skateboarding or anything but like now alot of kids know what me and my friends do on the weekends, ive shown black girls and guys and kids like 4bi9 shit and sick vids and there amazed and think its dank shit.

straight up, its because you have a vagina. no guy is gonna talk shit about a girl, especially to her face. its different for you becuase everyone expects you to suck. im sure most guys a surprised to see that you can even ride.

but props for being a girl skater, please try to be steezier than other girls

^wtf? there are plenty of terrible guy skaters too. i talk to all those kids, u dont wanna b that kid that no one likes anyway. ill talk to anyone at the park i dn care how bad u are.
