Emo? ghetto? rasta? blahblahblahblahblah...go skateboarding.

ok, so i spent quite a bit of today watching skate videos, which sucked cos it was super nice out and all i wanted to do was skateboard, but a front board on a flatbar somehow managed to leave me with a broken skateboard, and i cant afford to buy a new one...college sucks.

anyway, i have come to the realization that anything cool that has ever come to skiing or snowboarding came from skateboarding. rollerblading too, but i dont wanna talk about that...

if anyone has ever seen the hot chocolate tour video, youll understand what im talking about. watching a video like that (actually pretty much anything with marc johnson or gino iannucci) makes you just wanna cruise. go bomb hills, carve between cars, pop on and off curbs, nothing serious, just go out and roll. i have yet to come across a ski or snowboard video that makes me wanna do the same. i might get stoked to go out and slide a rail or hit a jump, or maybe hop around on some stuff on a snowboard, but never just go ski around slowly. thats something thats only gonna come from skateboarding.

the whole scene in skating is just so far beyond other things too. theres a certain connection that comes from pushing that everyone shares, regardless of where theyre from, what theyre wearing, or how good they are. now look at skiing...how many times do you see a group of kids hanging out in the park with their rasta gear on, just vibing on other kids whos style theyre not feeling, or arent good enough for them. snowboarding is the same way, but the ties to skateboarding, and the much larger percentage of skateboarders who participate, kinda help give it at least a little closer to the skate feel.

the whole fresh v. hesh thing has never been an issue in skateboarding. look at like, baker, for instance. you got guys like greco, dollin; it really doesnt get any more gnarly than those guys, style wise. crazy tight everything, silk scarves, ripped tshirts, the whole sid vicious motif, with a bit of bowie glam thrown in. now on the same team, you got kids like terry kennedy, who could possibly be the most ghetto dude around. legit from compton, actually raps, has fronts, etc. the complete opposite of those other guys. yet theyre on the same team, they skate together, they spend a whole lot of time together. try to find that kind of thing in skiing. all youll get is 'pshh, emo is so fucking gay, xxxxl for life, that kid must suck cos he doesnt wear it, so im not skiing with him'. you all know youve seen it, and a good bit of you have probably participated. or the mess of good kids who hang out with eachother exclusively and refuse to talk to anyone who isnt at their level. let the kids be kids, and why the hell not teach em a thing or two. ive had plenty of kids come up to me and ask how to do tricks (usually after a 'why do you wear those tight pants?') and i have no problem helping em out. you really dont see that with quite a few other kids.

music, editing styles, angles...they were all used in skate videos first. hot chocolate, once again, has pretty much every single song used in teddybear crisis in it...it came out first. i found that to be pretty funny how blatantly they bit the soundtrack, but, oddly enough, that was also one of my favorite ski videos, because skateboarding pretty much did things for it.

i guess what im trying to say is how much i would love to see skiing adopt the same type of style as skateboarding. the unity that people have just for skating, regardless of anything else. theres way too much people are worrying about in skiing beyond actual skiing. try to just have a good time, ski with whoever, skiers or snowboarders, and youll get a glimpse of how good a time skateboarding can be.

hate on me all you want...i just wanted to say it.

oh, and 1000 posts holy crap!

Happy Dayz had the same effect on me, as did the skate vid whichgot you stoked to get out and cruise.

i dont care about personal styles on the slopes, most of those kids that wear tight pants slayy, it really bugs me tho when people have no style at all, and were perfectly fitted coats with nothing, its just to ..... regular, you dont get noticed

i like this because its probably the first meaningful thread on newschoolers written by someone over 15. and i agree with it. kids need to chill out and just enjoy whats going on and not worry so much about the stuff that doesnt even matter in skiing

it just shows that skiing hasent progressed to that level. like pollards allmost there but still nowhere close

good job on 1000. and i agree somewhat with what your saying in regards to pregression, with my repsonse being skating has been around for alot longer.

still, the hate exists in all aspects of sports. there may be joning on NS, but usually by the time people are on the mountain, you see nothing but love, especially at the pro level. plus, i have been observing over the years and have concluded that all (not all, but many. 90%?) of skaters hate each other. This fact is relevent in my area at least. At the park or whenever anyone sees another person skating, there is a status level that gains ones respect. If you are not as good as someone, all you do is sweat their nuts and try to be cool with them, while anyone who is better than anyone else shits on those less skilled. Say thiers skater 1 (best), 2(average), 3(n00b). 3 looks up to 2 and 3, while 3 and 2 shit on 1, and 2 sweats 3 with no repsect in return.

its all reletive. some may percieve it as chill, while others find that there is nothing but hate.

hope that made sense (im trying to do homework), and again, good work on making a quality 1000

there is some of that in skiing, just not all over. it's definitely a way chiller scene, but there are places where skiing is like that, part of the time at least.

i feel like almost every action sport movie has bitten the YEAH RIGHT style of film, i agree as well, ski movies are hard to relate to, caus not everybody is hitting those rediculous BC jumps, skateboarding has that vibe i feel caus kids are skating those same spots, skiing needs movies where kids are like "O, that feature, i hit that, that things sick, shit, that was sick."

and o yeah, i would love to see ski movies move in a direction similar to the moonshine conspiracy films in surfing, its an angle and a style that would open up some new avenues

and new ways of viewing skiing

^check it out, rome around

Yeah, I love this thread. I'm not too worried about skiing right now because it still needs a lot of time to grow and mature. A lot of kids hate on whatever's different right now because all of the older kids did, and it was the thing to do. But now, these kids are starting to grow up and mellow out about seeing different styles. Therefore, the next crop of kids will grow up accepting all styles, and so on.

Are you confused yet?

yeah dude get what your saying.. i board and wear tight pants and i go to the hill with my freinds who ski and wear baggy stuff it donesnt realyl matter to us. all we care about is havin a good time. we do hate, but i mean its only hate to laugh on gayyypers

I would have to disagree that skaters are all chill with each other. Skating is one of the hardest sports out there and the frustration caused by it creates a lot of anger. How many times have you seen a skater smash their board to the ground in frustration? Now think how many times have you seen a skier or snowboarder try and purposely destroy a piece of their equipment?

I think skaters may be more chill with each other just because they don't usually skate with people they don't know when they go to a staircase or handrail, they only skate with people they don't know at the skatepark. Skiers are a bit like surfers in that we do not like people who suck getting in our way in the terrain park and such. Most people cannot ski (or surf) everyday, unlike skating which is easy to do in a moment of free time. When skiers and boarders get the chance to ride the park the last thing we want is to have some fool who doesn't know what he's doing criss crossing in front of the jumps and rails. This is a perfectly justifiable reason to act like an asshole.

I've almost never seen any hate between skiers or boarders based on what they are wearing, if they throw down its all good, thats what we're all there to do.

I know you said it wasn't the point, but are you saying that skating influences rollerblading like it does skiing and snowboarding, or rollerblading has been an influnce like skating, for skiing and boarding?

baker 3 is a sick movie and i personally like Ali Boulala's part cuz thats what he does he wears so many different styles of clothes and he's still a good skater ( hope he gets better soon)

haha yeah because if you focus a board so what they are cheap to make, not so much if you snap a pair of skis

" theres a certain connection that comes from pushing that everyone shares, regardless of where theyre from, what theyre wearing, or how good they are. "

im dorry but i have to completely disagree with that. ive been skating for about 5 years now, and these days i mostly longboard. one observation ive made is that skateboarders dont respect each other unless they know the other person is good or better. ive hung around alot of skateparks for alot of hours, and have seen this animosity to kids who suck. i feel like skiers are much tighter knit than skaters, especially because there are so many less freeskiers. i feel like i can talk to any freeskier i meet in the park, but i dont feel the same love at a skatepark

it may just be me, it may just be DC

i heard wade desarmo (one of the ghettoest tall tee wearing skateboarders out there) talking about how sick the toy machine team is.

Antwuan dixon and TK wont hesitate to tell you how dope bryan hermans hardflips are and that andrew reynolds is boss of the boss. Reynolds signed antwuan dixon and tk to his team.

I dont wear baggy gear by any means but my favourite skier is still mickeal (and tanner circa 1242/happy dayz) and my nano is still 2 gigs of three six mafia.

Get over the fashion show and look at the skiing.

Yeah, but rollerblading relates way more to skiing than skateboarding ever will because your on a fucking board... I like skateboarders and don't have a problem with them just skateboarders can't go as big as us rollerbladers...

surface would get laughed out of skating

only ski company that holds marketability that would survive in skateboarding is ninthward hands down.

why do you say that? im not really into skating, but it seems to me that surface's style is much more "regular" to skating than ninth

kinda true. honestly with skiing, unless your in the way people seem wayy more supportive. although not all skaters are like that

you cant make a company whos image is tight pants with mediocre riders in skateboarding and get success. Sure the surface team is good but trick for trick with even the average ata kid and they have nothing. The company is only "different" because the kids wear tight clothes and do shifties - nithward has a good team and does whatever the fuck they want, thier image isnt off clothes its off how they act and what they say.

Ski industry for some reason hates on it and tries to shut them out but attitudes like that drive skateboarding.

I dont know why it works like that.

Dont say im hating because I dont like thier fashion i wear fitted stuff too but i dont use it as an excuse to do lame tricks and think im sick.

yes ninthward does have good riders but people dont like them because they are assholes. yea they do whatever the fuck they want but thats only cool when your trying to be a tough guy in high school. they need to realize that they are a company and should show something for people to look up to.

i look up to someone with the guts to do what they think is sick and step up to lame shit.

fuck cookie cutter pros and saying whatever wont get you in trouble, its cool if thats what your into but i kinda like the people who stir shit up and change it when its bad.

everyone got choked at the orage masters but the event was lame and ninth got robbed, at least they manned up.

I dunno, I'm by far the worst skater at the park I go to but all the attention I get is encouragement. No one really hates on me, and I'm the one who can't even drop in haha. ehh I haven't witnessed any hate at all. then again I haven't witnessed any hate at the mountain either, other than snowboarders trying to encourage me to snowboard. Which is ok because we know each other

I want to start skating again, it's so fun! it's been raining the past few days though.

i really only read a bit into the creators initial post but it made me think of the "idea" crew right away. i honestly think that movie is going to inspire me, among many others hopefully, to just roll. just go with the movement of the mountain. its going to be sick as hell, but its not going to be anything THAT spectacular. i feel like that is what is going to give it its edge and its flare. anyway, should be sick, everyone should check that out this fall, and hit up their myspace, lame plug but do it, its badass.

this theread came out of a like 2 hour conversation between me n mark about this shit, crazy.

Skiing hasnt really made "TEam" movies yet, which is a huge difference between skating and skiing. It seems like it would be wayyyy harder to put together a team movie in skiing cause you have to travel so much

Skateboarding is the shit!

im with you man, but when you talk about how alot of the styles came from skate boarding your only forgetting one thing, that alot of freestyle skiers are skate boarders. Thats why you see alot of style transfer.

way to make the 1000 post count tho

Not every skateboarder is tight but not everyone can like each other. At my skatepark it's all love. You land a sick trick all the kids will be shouting. Everyone helps each other for the most part. Maybe it's because we've been around that park since day one but still there's a good connection. I usually spend all my time there in the summer its chill. Skiing is a far ways away from what skating is. If you went to another skatepark in some other state you might get hated on a little but once you start skating everyone is chill. With skiing you go to some other mountain it's totally different. The local kids wont let you go or bash on you if you fall. Skating if you fall people help you up ask if your alright. I'm not saying this doesn't happen in skiing but it happens a lot more in skating. If you want to see a good skating video with the true meaning of skateboarding get First Love. When they talk in that video it's amazing it make s you think a totally different way on skating. One of my favorite skate movies of all time

ive had days like that skiing though, where theres a group of like 6 of us, poles, no poles, tight pants, xxxl, bandanas, scarves and its us kids ripping around and buttering, slashing, bonking and spinning off everything in sight. such an amazing vibe, i wish every day could be like that
