Electronic music in the US vs. Elsewhere

Firstly, don't complain about this not being in Media and Arts, because I don't really think it belongs there.

Short story:

Last night I was in charge of putting together a playlist for a party and, I knew based on the people that would be there, that I would basically have to include a bunch of the really lame, overplayed, mainstream hip-hop and pop songs. So I included those, but also I wanted to put some unique stuff in people's heads so I included some electronic music (Deadmau5, Basshunter, MGMT and some dubstep). When these electronic songs came on people actually complained about them! What the heck?! They said they couldn't dance to them, and then they proceeded to skip them until they found something they thought was better.

All that to say, why is it that people don't like electronic music at parties (in the US)? The beats are definitely strong enough to dance to, and the music is usually very high energy. I don't get it...

Spark notes: Played electronic music at party, people didn't like it, why isn't electronic music that popular in the US?

give it another couple years, they're starting to work it into pop music and eventually people will be able to handle the full on edm

but yeah you have to save it for the end of the mix once everyone is wasted haha

Yeah, MGMT is a solid electronic band? It's bigger every where else in the world. Better seen for it, better music.

It's super popular over here. Probably 50% of clubs are dedicated to playing house/dubstep/minimalist/techno/8bit/chiptune, and no mainstream stuff.

My uni even has a dedicated Electronic Music Society

Well, your first mistake was obviously forgetting the ecstasy. But other than that I will never understand our lack of appreciation of electronic.

the only large group of people I have ever seen that are actually into that music is the Volkswagen/ European Car guys- every car show you go to its either underground hip hop or some kickass house/techno/dubstep- but then again were into euro cars so the music must come with it haha

i hated the music at the parties i went to in the states. All i heard was flo rida and t-pain...

(Deadmau5, Basshunter, MGMT and some dubstep) aren't too unique nowadays, but dont worry the whole EDM rave scene is making a comeback. fuck what anyone says , im done with blackpeople dance moves and autotunes for a bit

See and that's the thing. I picked Deadmau5, MGMT, and Basshunter because they are more mainstream, but yet people still were really lame. Oh well...

It's funny because a lot of new rap/pop songs are getting in to electronic which is great IMO. I have a friend who hates electronic and then he goes and plays some song remixed with deadmau5 and says its amazing lol

i lol'd so hard.

Electronic music is starting to get more popular in the US, i'm not saying it's gonna be like germany anytime soon but give it a few years and it'll get there.

electronic music is ahead of the curve here.

this is like metal music at the turn of the millennium. You automatically got put in your own little niche at school and people would think you are goth because you wore a Static-X t-shirt.

Next thing you know a few years later. OMG EVERYONE LOVES ROCK MUSIC. ATREYU! YEAAHHH ZOMG or whatever the fuck band it is thats hot out.

now you see deadmau5 blow up and its like the introduction to everyone.......mtv is making it main stream.

You throw in all the musical acts out there that are top40/mainstream that are including more electronic kinda vibes in their music and b4 you know it....everyone will be dancing to house/electro.

Just go to chicago, NYC, miami, or san francisco.....you'll quickly find that there are tons of choices for those who want to go to electronic shows/play house parties with electro music.

its all about the mood of the music too. a lot of music is just too much for a party. people want something more mellow or like a deep house kinda feel to it. not all CLISH CLANG CLANG CLANG BANG BWAAAAAAAAAMP

i can only dance to hardcore electro. when someone plays G6 i just fucking stand there...wtf do i do...but when someone plays rusko i can bang my head. hence why whenever i get drunk and listen to dubstep i wake up with a sore neck from headbanging all night

someone didn't read the thread...

obviously americans do not make the best electro music, the french do. that is not even a debate

How many times have you seen me post in a thread, with an understanding of what the thread is even about? I'd say 5-6 times, in my 4500+ posts.

GET FUCKING OFFENDED THAT SOMEONE DOESN'T LIKE YOUR MUSIC.

MAKE THREAD ABOUT IT ON NEWSCHOOLERS CRYING ABOUT IT.

JUSTIFY IT BY SAYING YOU HAVE BETTER TASTES IN MUSIC THAN THEM.

I grew up listening to electronic in Detroit. Birth place of electronic music... where it proceeded to fail (like everything else in Detroit) and move over seas. Its great to see people like Deadmau5 and Pretty Lights etc making the genre more well known. But to me, these still fall into a "pop" like electronic category (don't get me wrong, no where near old pop techno like darude and terrible radio techno). Theres a very well known community in the Detroit/Windsor area who have never let the music go. Ritchie Hawtin is close to god when it comes to music and his other older dj homies are close to follow (Kevin Saunderson, Carl Craig, Stacey Pullen). Check em out, but if people arent down with Deadmau5 and MGMT then they def arent going to be into these dudes.

i hope it doesnt blow up actually.

in france ever time you go see a boyze noise set it s full of 16 y old...

same with any ED banger set...

it s so annoying.

I like it when people who go to show are actually real fans, and not some trendwhores who went to see the crookers because mtv said it was cool.

so please mtv keep on playing crappy fistbumping beats so that trendwhores will never come to good sets.

and the music you listed is not unique electronic :)

mgmt rules but it is pop mainstream music, basshunter is crappy commercial electronic music, and deadmau5 is mainstream electro too :)

To the OP, I agree one hundred percent with you...this pisses me off. Last year at my old school we used to have the dopest parties, with the best music. So much dubstep and electro stuff. Now that I'm at a bigger state school, all the parties have reallyyyy lame pop music and no one really knows/ or is into dubstep and electro stuff. Its dumb

/rant

1. Read the thread. He acknowledges this.

2. You listen to music few others have heard of, and that makes your super cool and groovy

get the dj to play some really heavy dubstep at a school dance and I bet 90% of the girls will stand there not knowing what to do

just because you can't grind to some electro music doesn't mean you can't dance, just get high as hell and rage to the beat

I'm pretty sure that electronica is being popularized by the hipster apathy movement.
Super popular in LA right now.... not at all really in Minneapolis as far as I have seen.
My friend said I was listening to weird music when I was listening to Passion Pit. Then I informed him that they are opening for Muse who he is seeing this week and he was all. "Oh wow, I really like this."

Maybe you misunderstood my original post. I wasn't saying that the specific electronic music I was playing was unique (cause I realize it isn't) but I was saying that playing any electronic music whatsoever was unique.

how bout some gogo?/static/images/flash_video_placeholder.png/static/images/flash_video_placeholder.png

Just got back from Berlin Germany. They play a lot of that music and I think it was really good. The clubs out there are way better then American clubs. What a crazy place to party. There is a club that was called Maxxim, that place was off the hook with this type of music. It was open until 6AM!!! I dig the music for sure. Can't wait for it to become popular here.

fuck all that shit.. listin to what you like... i still have a hard on for chemical brothers. and stuff like that. fuck ideals about music. . i listin to such a wide array of tunes. like this.

so yeah. you tredcore motherfuckers. can suck a fat one.!!!!

and op I don't know what type of parties you go to but all that is played at parties I go to is dubstep, mgmt and electronic music. If anyone puts on overplayed radio shit they get bitched out.

probably cause you live in Ohio.

Come to Denver. Electronic scene is banger here. Dub police filmed for a documentary about dubstep in America at their show here. Plus CO puts out some dope ass electronic music.

This sums it up.

"Your music sucks"

"Everyone's listening to it these days"

"OMG WHERE CAN I GET IT"

I was once told that Earth Wind & Fire is "dick suckin music"... I suggest this for all parties if you can swing that angle.

what was the context.. cause i would be down for getting my dick sucked while getaway was playing in the background. ..... but i know what he meant.. fuck that person..

a lil live funk stuff..

Proof that Europeans have shit taste, too:

If this is what's hot, I want no part in that suckfest.

"babe, I bought an earth wind and fire album on vinyl today for $5!! You know what kind of music this is?? This here is dick suckin music" pretty sure he meant is was magic music.
