Can't believe someone let this bitch near the fresco... Fuck it makes me sick that this was allowed to happen. She's really lucky it isn't very valuable.

A 19th century fresco has been ruined by an elderly Spanish woman who attempted to restore the mural.

The unnamed woman, said to be in her 80s, was attempting to fix Ecco Homo[/i] by painter Elias Garcia Martinez. The painting, a sophisticated depiction of Jesus with the crown of thorns around his head, has been transformed into an amateurish, almost cartoon-like portrait.

The woman had never received permission for the restoration work.

The U.K.'s Independent reported that the damage was discovered after Martinez's granddaughter made a donation to the Centro de Estudios Borjanos, which holds an archive of local religious artworks.

When staff went to check on the work at the Santuario de Misericodia church in Borja, near Zaragoza in northeastern Spain, they discovered the painting had been altered, the paper reported.

Culture councillor Juan Maria de Ojeda told the Spanish newspaper El Pais that the woman said she had "good intentions." But he added that "she had gotten out of hand."

The artwork is said to have little artistic importance, the Independent reported, but it did have some local sentimental value.

Holy shit the Deposition of Christ is like one of my favourite paintings of all time. I love Raphael.

If you ignore the photoshop, examine the painting. Look to where the light is coming from. Can you see what direction the light is coming from?

The answer is Christ himself. It is Jesus Christ that is the source of light in this painting. From Him the light radiates outward to expose the other figures depicted in the painting. How fucking cool is that??? This painting is a jewel of the Renaissance because it was done in such a revolutionary manner. Never before had anyone used this type of lighting and its innovation is truly typical of Renaissance art.

Ugh. I love that painting. I am super bummed out I didn't get to go visit it again this year during my time in the Vatican a few weeks ago. Little art history lesson for you all ;)

If the light radiates from him. Why is the one chicks face lit up more than the other guy that's blocking her. He's got a front row seat to jesus and his face is pretty dark.

He IS lit up more. However the light that is visible on that "chicks" face is also a little bit brighter because of her position and arguably because she is the Virgin Mary, therefore also another Holy figure. Its good that you noticed this, because it was most likely intended that she be more pronounced. However the light itself is coming from Christ.

and oh shit I said it was a Raphael. Its actually a Caravaggio, I just was thinking about the Vatican (where that painting is at) and had a bit of a Freudian slip there.

How is the llight coming from christ if there are shadows under him? if the only light source is christ, why is that guys knee lit up, when it isn't facing christ?

dude its why the fucking painting is so famous. can you not just look at what I said and go, hmm cool I never knew that before. JUST FOR YOUR INFORMATION!!!! I HAVE BEEN TO THE FUCKING VATICAN, STUDIED ART HISTORY AND HAD A PROFESSOR IN ART HISTORY TELL ME WHY IT IS SO FUCKING SPECIAL AND WHERE THE LIGHT COMES FROM! I KNOW! WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT!

to clarify this for for you its part of something called the spotlight effect. the intent is to have the focus of the light come from the foreground, where the audience is sitting for a more dramatic effect. Its not a NATURAL light, instead its like a spotlight on Christ sent from Heaven and then from the spotlight the light radiates off of Christ to show his Holiness. He's like an orb that radiates the light shining off of him and because of that acts as the primary source of light in this painting. Satisfied?

The palm isn't above Christ's head. I asked the very same question as you. Its owner is further back in the painting. I'm not making this shit up and telling you this because I feel like it. Its how the painting has been analyzed professionally. I was just trying to make a point of how cool it was and then you had to go and be an asshole and contradict everything I have been saying.

maybe you should get fucking educated.

and I hope you contract both forms of diabetes.

yes, your suggestion of getting educated on art history is duly noted...

lol!

and that's not possible. i'm an immaculate human specimen.

Education reform just jumped up a few spots on everyone's lists of concerns regarding the government and the next elections.
