What a terrible excuse for a Democrat, and a pity that the Democratic party has to resort to ignorance of basic human rights in order to get a president elected. Or maybe I should say, shame on the American people for making a pro-gay marriage stand untenable.

Any thoughts on this? It really sickened me to hear Edwards say time and again these exact words: 'We believe marriage should be between a man and a woman.' Still, Dem leadership would be a lot more sympathetic to the needs of the GLBT community than the GOP, but I can't believe that we're still such a backwards people that a political candidate can't stand up for something he knows is right, for fear of not getting elected.

I dont think marriage is a human right Its an invention, but all the same I think if two people want to publicly recognise there commitment to one another and gain special privlages from the goverment thats totaly cool. ^Homosexuality may or may not be against what you consider 'basic human survival instincts,' but I'll tell you one thing: if those instincts operated in the species-wide perspective, almost everyone would be gay and not pumping out more overpopulation.

And for Raoul: Doesn't matter whether 'marriage' is a basic human right or not, although I contend that the right to pair IS a basic human right because it comes naturally to the species (anyone want to argue me on that one, think about examples of other animals before you do). The institution of marriage is our government's way of recognizing that human instinct and right, and its witholding of that right is a 'Don't ask, don't tell' approach to avoiding the 'problem' of the American gay community.

^ As far as switching possitions after an election, thats been done before. Carter did the same when he ran for President with the black vote, he made several vauge or issue skiting remarks when issues of black civil rights came up etc. Things that could have been viewed as racist. Then when he was elected he made a 180 on the polices, full civil rights for blacks on the policies in question. He wouldn't have won the election any other way.

Who knows if this is really the case in the current election, but as its been said before, its really sad and pethetic that america is still so conservative that this is even a topic. You know if Kerry or Edwards came out and said 'yes we will make gay marrige leagal in the US under a constitutional amendment', or even civil unions with the same benifits of 'marrige' they would loose the election by a landslide.

Don't blame Edwards or Kerry, blame America.

My favorite part of the debate was the first question to Cheyne about the Paul Bremmers recent statement that the troop levels in Iraq have always been to low to adequetly secure the country. He mannaged to talk for two minutes without ever addressing the actual question.

Interestinly enough, the orriginal contingency plan for the Invasion of Iraq called for 500,000 troops. (Op plan 1003) It was streamlined by the administration to its current state, (somewhere around 133,000 troops) in effort to make the war possible on shorter notice.

i noticed that too, and thought it was an interesting political move, and a smart one, if not exactly honest. Look at it like an ideological line. If Cheney/Bush are way off on the right side of that line, and Kerry/Edwards are only slightly to the left of THEM, they still get all the leftist vote (because even if they're not pro-gay marriage, they're still better options for that community than the alternative), and possibly some of the soft republican vote, too. A large portion of the latter group would have turned away from the dems if a strong, prog gay marriage policy had been part of their platform. As for whether they change that stance after the election, we'll see. I can't tell.

i haven't read this whole thread so i don't really know what everyone's saying. anyway, i totally agree with kami. gay marraiges should be just as legit as a man and woman's, or at least be legal. this is the thing that pisses me off the most about bush, but what else is he supposed to think? southern/christian born and bred. regardless, we need a president who is concered about and has respect for every U.S. citizen, gay or not, and sadly i don't think either bush or kerry is willing to do that. hopefully kerry/edward's bull is just in an attempt to be elected but who knows. o, and we were talking about this in one of my classes and someone brought up the fact that one in every 10 people is gay, %10, that means YOU probably know a couple people who are gay, and you probably really like those people, so let's have a little respect shall we?

has anyone ever noticed that only the extremes of issues are talked about and debated in our government? Its either you are against gay marriage or are for it. Its never 'I'm against gay marriage religiously, but not politically.' you know why? its because our government is corrupt. If you havent noticed, our whole government system is based on elections and getting elected again. The Republicans say they are against gay marriage. That means the Democrats have to be for gay marriage. The republicans are for the war. That means the democrats have to be against it. Thats why politicians come across as always changing their minds- beacuse they have to get everyone elses votes. I wanted to go see Bush speak near me, but tickets were $40 A PIECE. what kind of democracy do we live in where we have to fuckin buy a damn ticket to listen to the leader that we elected? AND HE HAS A $150 MILLION CAMPAIGN ACCOUNT???? their excuse was crowd control reasons....fuck that shit. figure something else out then, but dont deny the people of their right to hear what their leader has to say to them.
