Editing: linearly or step by step??

Hi guys, I wanted to know what your approach to editing (for ski edits) is once you've rounded up the shots you wanna use and chose the song:

-Do you edit linearly, as in make everything perfect from a to z, syncing every shot with music and adding effects or whatever shot after shot so that everything you've edited from the intro to where you got is pretty much how it will look in the final edit?

-Or do you throw all the shots on the song to get a rough idea of where you want different segments to be, and once you're happy with the way clips are ordered you trim them, sync them and add effects?

I've been editing mostly linearly but I'm thinking especially for skiing that might be the wrong approach?

I'd be very happy to hear any other techniques or approaches you guys have when it comes to the way you edit.

i do it the second way, throw everything in and then figure it out. also something i think helps a lot but i don't do enough myself is to leave everything you make for a few days without watching it and go do something different because it is amazing how much you miss once you get into an edit. if you get a fresh eye you can pick up on so many more problems

I drop a song and fill in shot by shot. Usually I'll know where I want certain shots ahead of time and I'll drop those first and fill in around it. Sooo both?

That's actually a good idea. Although I almost never edit in one go, at least for non ski edits.

Oh interesting, that's pretty much how I do it. Guess you just gotta be good then whatever way works xD

Usually I do more of the second. I tend to go through all of the footage for an edit and write up a shot order for the footage, drop a song in, and then put all the shots in according to the shot order and song. I don't start doing audio or coloring until after the order, cuts, and transitions are all finalized. The way I look at it, you should do audio + coloring all at once for the most consistent video. If you're doing audio or color over a lot of time and separately you'll tend to mess up levels and get variations in the color clip-by-clip.

Second method will produce a better feel and nicer edit

Im definitely trying this way next time, thanks

I do it linearly but I completely agree with leaving it for a few days to refresh your mind. Or if your on a tight deadline go for a run or do something to excersize.

I usually like to line up tricks with specific parts of the song and then kind of shape parts of the edits around those tricks. So basically I try and make the skier land his tricks on the beats of the song just to give the trick a little emphasis. If that makes sense haha

This. Color, audio, and name graphics last.

For me, I log all of my footage, throwing out the garbage. Then I write up a rough outline: intro, rider order, ender, etc. Once I pick a song and an order the rest of the edit starts to make itself.

Everyone does this slightly differently. Keep editing and you'll find your groove.
