if you can get final cut somehow for free or for cheap i'd just jump straight to that. but if not imovie is a decent start like eheath said

id start with some consumer video editing program, i started with roxio, moved up to pinnacle studio, and to primere

It depends if you have an older Mac and you have to older version of imovie HD I would try that but if you have to new version I wouldn't even waste you time, I would just spend the $200 and buy Final Cut Express!
