I know this doesn't belong here but i figured i would get the quickest response. I am getting a new comptuer with a week or two and i need some help on what to get..

I WILL BE EDITING IN HDV and i know the files are a HOG. so with that in mind, does anyone on here recommend a system thats decent for editing and a reasonable price. I have been looking at some of the HP Media Series computers and the Macbook as well. I have around 1200 to spend on the computer itself and i can get a external hard drive soon after to hold all my clips and such.

The Macbook i was looking at has the following specs

2.4ghz intel core 2 duo

2gb memory

160gb hard drive

The Desktops i am looking at are as follows these are just the basic specs

2.4-2.5ghz intel core 2 duo or quad core

atleast 3gb memory

and atleast 500gb hdd

anyone that edits help a brotha out!

^ yea what he said, or if you actually wanted to buy final cut and youre in college you can get it for 350 from your school library, its not that bad if you split it with some people

Personal prefrence. I'd take a PC over Mac any day, and trust me, i've used both systems.

People need to stop thinking Mac's are God but in a different shape.

With $1200 you'd probably get more - on paper - with a PC than a Mac. That being said, I'm not sure I'd buy PC's from HP.

Check out www.delloutlet.com

For $1199 you get an XPS 720 with Core 2 Quad, 4GB Ram, 500 GB hard drive and GeForce 8800 GT graphics card

i'd actually suggest building a computer if you choose to go with a desktop.

Buy parts from newegg.com or tigerdirect.com

You will save a good amount of money, and its actually not at all hard to assemble as long as you arent a total idiot.

Then, either download a pirated edition of XP or just buy it, Vista is still buggy/requires more memory, memory that could be dedicated to your editing software (premiere cs3 most likely).

You will easily be able to customize it. Once you get all set with XP/drivers, just snag a copy of adobe cs3 production and you will be good.

yea, i guess you are right, the laptop that i use now i bought when vista just came out so i got rid of it reall fast, but i guess it has some potential now, especially if uses all of that money to build a desktop, thing will be a beast

good input though allen

1tb is fucking overkill, 500mb for now would do you well. Unless you're making a full length movie and are going to fill like 60 tapes, you don't need 1tb.

You know whats crazy? I use a macbook but when I edit I boot to windows via bootcamp to run my editing programs.

Shit dude.......I didn't pay attention to the price limit much. I'm just over PC's because I got one with 2gb of ram and vista. It struggles running Sony Vegas. IF you have the money go mac for sure, but if you decide to go PC try to get windows XP and not vista. Vista takes double the memory to run it seems. The good thing about PC's are that you can deck them out for waaaaay cheaper.

I edit HDV with Vegas on my macbook in windows and it runs flawlessly. I have 2 gb of RAM and a 500 GB external on a 2 ghz intel core duo

you don't neccesarily need to edit in HDV, if you have access to another computer you might want to edit in a lower res, then just export a master in HDV. that way you can save up your money and buy a real nice computer for next years movie.

Ok just to back up what i said...

Even though my laptop is a year old, i still priced out how much it would cost to build a relatively nice pc for editing software.

Ok so, (and you can get some of these item for a bit cheaper)

19' widescreen lcd monitor

Quad core duo intel processor

4gb ddr2 ram (2 2GB sticks)

nice nice nvidia 512mb pcix graphics card (ill check model)

500 GB western digital internal SATA hard drive

pretty nice looking MicroATX case that got good reviews

power supply/fans

MicroATX motherboard (that is compatible with case/quadcore/ram/graphics card)

dvd burner

= 750ish shipped from newegg

needless to say, even though i dont need a computer im tempted just buy this shit with the money i make this week...

i looked things over..i can get a hp for a good price since my dad gets discounts through his work..i can also get a macbook with 2.4ghz dual core 2gb ram and 160hdd and i would just get an external for 1199..the HP is around 1000 and it has 2.6ghz quad core, 720gbhdd, 6gb ram...
