Edit Shot on 7D and RED One

Been super busy working lately so havent really had the time to cut this the way I wanted but here's a little edit I shot with a buddy (Nathan Garofolos). Nathan shot RED on long lens from the tripod (120fps), I shot close/glidecam shots on the 7D (60fps). I think the footage mixes together pretty well. Check it:

Well of course they're going to mix well on the internet...

Also, shitty light day and some interesting color correction helped with the blending.

My whole point was, the RED will produce a much better shot in different conditions/if view on a high resolution screen.

No doubt the red puts out better image, I'm just saying, for a camera thats 1/10th the price of the red, the 7D holds up pretty well! And you'd be surprised that the 1080p on the 7D or 5D, when mixed in with red footage and output to blue ray can be completely indistinguishable, I've done it, you just definitely have to know what your doing to get it there, and have to shoot the 7D right as its not nearly as flexible as the red

These dslrs are growing on me by the day but i think ill wait for the next generation to come out, if not the next one after that.

I bet in 20 years they will be sick!!! ;)
Cant wait for technology man, gotta work with what you can and stay on top of it if you want to be competitive in this industry. Even though that means dealing with all the pains of newly developed stuff...

I thought it was a really smooth edit....not really a fan of that song but it didnt take away from the filming/content. I think the 7D is super legit and produces really dope shots....

What do you guys think about the 4/3" sensor cameras due at the end of 2010 from Panasonic and Sony vs. the DSLR craze? Do you think they will stack up, especially against the price-point of say the T2i and 7D?

And Trent, I have terrible connection speeds right now, but can't wait to see how the footage mixes between the cameras!

Those new cameras are totally where things are going, DSLRs are sick for the image they give you but they are such a bitch to use! So its just a matter of time til we get the best of both worlds. I dont know if the 4/3rds is going to be the absolute answer but both of those cameras looks pretty rad! Now canon needs to come out with one! (my guess is that there will be a new XL series with a DSLR sensor in it and ENG controls that will be awesome!)

Awesome job Trent! Footage did match really well, and it was well edited. What lenses did you use on your 7D? and how the hell did you get your hands on a Red One?? :P

Thanks man! I was using my Sigmas, a 10-20, 24-70 f2.8 and Nathan had my 70-200 f2.8 on the red. My buddy has a red and I just asked if he wanted to come shoot... Nice guy!

Yeah i think the more video oriented camera body will be better than the dslr body. The dslr is made to shoot photos which make shooting video on it, as trent said, a pain. The new shit will be the 4/3th.

that was tight, real hard to tell the difference for sure, granted we are on the web. I am stoked for the new 4/3rds cameras that are coming out. that shit will be interesting for sure

The Red one sensor can do 4.5k, but they are putting the new mysterium sensors in redone bodies already too... So there is more then one sensor.

Stop getting caught up on technology.

a creative mind set is way more important. If you have to care about the quality of the camera your not doing it right.

No arguement that creativity is the most important, but you gotta have the right tool for the job... Plus this tech shit is just fun to talk about, thats how you learn.

Stop whining :)

That was dope yo, I was surprised how well the 7D held up, albeit internet qual. Overall thumbs up for sure, loved the edit.

crazy edit, i loved it. The color grading was an interesting choice, very cool, what did you do to it and what with?

and wanna elaborate on SLRs being a bitch to use? im lookin at buying one sometime in the future and wanna know whats your take on it

I have a t2i atm and no complaints so far, but there are a ton of things you have to be wary of when you are shooting. As long as you know what you are up against you should be fine

Depends on the application. The 7D is almost indistinguishable from the RED on a 40' screen in terms of sharpness due to the aliasing. The main areas the RED outperforms the DSLR is the RAW codec, global shutter, and workflow, amongst others (such as attaining that level of sharpness without any aliasing). The DSLR workflow is harder than a video cam, but I see that as a good thing because it will only make you a better filmer. Sure it lacks certain features in the "brain," but upgrades are not far off, and even without them, the pros far outweigh the cons. That 7D image quality easily beats anything I've ever seen from an hvx200/hpx170 simply because of the noticeably superior optic workflow, and that alone justifies paying the relatively cheap price.
