Economic Stimulus Plan

i think its for anyone who gets a paycheck... but i coulda read wrong. sounds really cool tho

I haven't read that article yet, but I love how their plan to fix the economy is to simply pump more money into it hoping it will just fix everything.

I dont think this applies to students because its a government loan and not a bank loan. The government has no control over the economy.

I'm a full time student... but I made 11K last year throughout the summer and break... So I'm just hoping I'll get it now.

I cant wait for my $600, it's about time the government gave something back to us, new flyrod for me!!

WASHINGTON (CNN)[/b] -- President Bush on Wednesday signed the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, calling it a "booster shot" for the American economy.

"The bill I'm signing today is large enough to have an impact, amounting to more than $152 billion this year, or about 1 percent of the GDP (gross domestic product)," the president said in the brief ceremony in the East Room of the White House.

The government hopes the measure, which will send most Americans tax rebate checks by May, will either prevent a recession or make one relatively brief.

The package also includes tax breaks for equipment purchases by businesses, as well as payments to disabled veterans and some senior citizens.

The bipartisan measure moved through Congress at relative break-neck speed, going from initial discussions to enactment in less than four weeks.

The package will pay $600 to most individual taxpayers and $1,200 to married taxpayers filing joint returns, so long as they are below income caps of $75,000 for individuals and $150,000 for couples. There is also a $300 per child tax credit.

The rebates will put about $120 billion in the hands of individuals in the hope that they will spend it and boost a faltering U.S. economy.

Economists generally agree that the economy should see a boost from the rebate checks. But most also agree that the full impact will be less than the total value of the stimulus package.

That's because some recipients are expected to save their rebates or use them to pay down credit cards or other debt instead of spending it. In addition, some consumers may spend their rebates on imported items, which would provide a more limited lift to the U.S. economy.

"My guess is that of the $110 billion to $120 billion of tax rebates, about half will go to U.S. products and services," said David Wyss, chief economist for Standard & Poor's.

There also are questions about whether the stimulus will actually be the key to ending or preventing a recession.

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said last week that the Internal Revenue Service planned to send the rebate checks to about 130 million Americans.

"They're going to be getting ready to get checks out, and believe me, they will. ... And this is largely going to be done by the time summer's over. And so we're going to move quickly and make a difference," he said

Bush praised the quick work of the House and Senate and urged Americans not to "overreact" to the current economic troubles.

"In the past seven years, the system has absorbed shocks: recession, corporate scandals, terror attacks, global war; yet the genius of our system is that it can absorb such shocks and emerge even stronger," he said. "In a dynamic market economy, our economy will prosper and it will continue to be the marvel of the world

So am I reading it correctly? I made 7k last year, so ontop of my tax return which will be in this week I will get ANOTHER 300 dollars on top of that?

That's about it ya. I made about 5k last year too, so I get another $300 on top of whatever else I get back. Stoked for it.

Okay, so after talking to my parents. They say I will not get it back because they are "claiming" me. And then I said "Fuck you" and kicked them in the face with my energy legs.

So will I get the 300 even if my parents claim me?

^my economics professor told me that even if yor parents are claiming you on their taxes, if you made over 3000 dollars on your own you will still get your $300 and your parents will get their $300 as well. Sort of double dipping, if you will

Nice! I'm expecting around $2,000 for my tax return, so this will be enough to raise me out of poverty until I start working again.

So I heard from my dad that this isn't exactly the 'free' money everyone thinks it is. Say you get $300 back for your rebate this year...well that $300 will come out of your tax rebate for next year. So if you are entitled to $1000 back next year, and you got the extra $300 back this year, then you would only get $700 back next year. They take whatever extra we get this year from our return next year. Lame.

yeah thats true. its not free money and its not a free money from the government. its simply a tax refund for next years tax season.

your just getting some of your refund back earlier.

SO ITS NOT FREE MONEY

it depends on the last two numbers of your social security number..

its some real robin hood economics: those that earn over $75k ind. or $150 combined don't get any....what percentage of the total collected income tax is from this bracket?

at least there's the $3k minimum to receive the "rebate".

also, aren't most smarter people going to use the money to pay off existing debts/loans or place their "rebate" in a savings account or invest it.......therefore not actually doing any "economic stimulus"?

the rebate is practically pointless anyways. They are hoping that they can 'boost' us out of this recession in 6 months time. This 'rebate' they are giving us is just going to come out of our tax return for next year. So next year we won't get much money back at all if we qualify for the 'rebate'. Hopefully we aren't in a recession next year too, or else the lack of money coming on our refunds will have even more dramatic of an effect.

the idea is that people take that money and go buy things and thus boost the economy, however, with the majority of people in debt etc, the money will most likely be used to pay that debt off and therefore have little immidiate impact. I will be one of those that goes and buys something though, so i dont mind it one bit. and its not a bad plan, theres just a lot of other factors that are counteracting it right now. as for the tax in the future issue, just wait till obama is president and we have to cover universal healthcare that includes all the illegal immigrants who wont be paying into the system. then instead of 20% of my paycheck out the window it will be something like 35-40%. and the democrats refused to sign onto bush's tax breaks which are set to end next year. super.
