Eating Lunch at the Mountain

Lodge food is ridiculously expensive and PB&J gets old after a while. What do you guys like to eat for lunch while you're skiing? I want some new ideas for what to eat this upcoming season.

sometimes I microwave a potato, fry up some bacon, stick it in the potato, and wrap it in tin foil. Then when your ready for lunch, you just get on the lift with a tourist family, dont say anything, and then just pull a potato out of your pocket. you get the best looks from some people

hard boiled eggs. super easy. slice up some apples and summer sausage with a lil peanut butta yumm - always got peanut butter on the backpack - and also banana wrapped in a tortilla with some PB for breakfast

Bring a camping bbq and cook burgs and dogs in the parking lot. Add in a few beers and you have a nice little feast for cheap. Or I just bring leftovers in a cooler

I'm out touring most days so no lodge food for this guy. A bacon and spinach bagel, a cliff bar, a chocolate bar, some trail mix, and two apples is my usual lunch with a little variation here and there depending on what's in the fridge.

If it's an inbounds pow day I'll just eat a really good breakfast, get to the hill early (obvs) and ski hard all morning till I get tired (usually around 1pm) and head home and make myself a mean BLT for lunch. Either that or some pub food during apres ski if the day goes that way.

Here is some of the knowledge that I have gained over 10 years of maybe buying a meal from a resort like 10 times.

-Ramen noodles. If they get crushed just use less water and you are set. If you are wearing a pack and you don't want them to get crushed, put it in a crush proof sandwich container.

-Beef jerky. Pretty expensive, but you can make your own and if you do it right it is pretty good. high protein and pack-able.

-Instant oatmeal packets. The paper packets that they come in aren't water permeable so you don't need a container to make them in, just shake the packet up and pour hot water right in and stir. proof:

-Instead of sandwich bread use pita bread, just stuff it with turkey, ham, salami, or whatever and since pita is unleavened, it can't get smashed and soggy. Super easy to eat with gloves on riding up the lift so you don't have to deal with crowds in the cafeteria. Very slim so you can fit it in a jacket pocket. Also try with nutella for a morning snack. Warm up the pita in the microwave(like 10 seconds) when you make it and it is less likely to rip.

-Emergen-C packets are pretty similar to sports drinks, but better nutrients and vitamins. I have never tried the sport drink version, but it just has electrolytes and shit like that. Again very pack-able and lightweight.

-Someone else said it already, but Hard boiled eggs are good too. High in protein and small, but not necessarily slim and pack-able, maybe if you slice them up though

-Every once in a while treat yourself to a meal bought from the resort. It helps to support the guys that make you ski day possible. A lot of resorts have really good food, and while it may seem overpriced is is actually pretty good for the price. A-Basin's Black Mountain Lodge pastrami sandwich tastes like a $25 dollar sandwich for $14(i think).

forgot about the jerky. If I'm feeling balling I'll get myself some Beef Jerky from the store and put it in my cargo pocket in my snow pants. Pocket Jerky does wonders while climbing. Doesn't freeze, you don't need to stop if you want a nibble - just reach in and grab a chunk while on the go.

Wraps. chicken casear, ham & turky, roastbeef & salami. Put some guac, cream cheese, hummus in it.

peanut butter and fluff to mix it up from pb&j. sometimes peanut butter sandwiches. i could make a pb&j on a bagel if im really lookin for power. sometimes i just eat peanut butter with a spoon.

Peanut butter is a staple in my diet.

Have lunch in my pack,

flask of soup if you want something warm, sandwiches being the obvious one

plus that way you can eat on the lift so no need wasting shred time with breaks.

Mini BBQ, foldable chairs, burgers (cheap), chips (just not Lays, fucking bag of air...), water from Costco (35 for $2.15), and jerky and trail mix for the chair

Ill usually bring Ramen or a sandwich. But one day, I brought like a half pound of naan (indian bread) and ate it on the chairlift...good times

If you're desperate there are always heaps of leftovers around the place. Theres actually so many half eaten pizzas at my resort its not funny, but its a good idea to bring some food incase you're unlucky.

In the French Alps there are crepe stalls everywhere, so good.

Usually a bowl of soup with 10+ rolls, they're free but you're supposed to take one with the soup, so you get some unusual/murderous looks

I make a trail mix of pretzels, nuts, cheetos, chips all that good stuff and put it in my jacket ipod pocket for lift runs. (:

I actually have eaten leftovers from a lesson group once. They only ate like half of what they had and didn't even touch the rest so I asked the instructor if I could have it. We got like half a pizza two huge brownies and some rice krispies.

some great ideas on this thread

usually I don't eat. breakfast in the am, ski all day, eat the most insane meal afterwords. feel like a champ

nutella and waffles sounds delicious. the potato idea was great, and yea get a dehydrator and make your own jerky (not much cheaper than buying it but if you do it with like turkey or chicken then it can be cheaper)

There is a lodge at my mountain that isn't owned by the resort....so they keep their prices cheaper than the actual lodge....it like $5 for a huge plate of nachos that I usually can't eat all of....also they give free drinks.....but when that lodge isn't open we usually buy a little Caesars pizza and split it.

If you don't my carrying it, crock pot with chili or any kind of soup with buns is delicious. I never buy at the lodge my whole family brings buns meat cheese and drinks and we make our own food.

Beef jerky, pita bread w/ turkey, ham, mayo, lettuce, pepper jack, and pickles.

holy shit

Take 3-4 pumps of ketchup and add 2 packets of creamer, a dash of Tabasco, half pack of sugar and some salt and pepper. Free tomato soup. I eat this all the time and it actually tastes pretty good. For a bonus you can steal those little crackers and dip them.

Clementines and a big ol jar of just peanut butter. Also when I used to own poles I'd buy apples and stick them through the bottom of my pole (lost the basket on one of them) just in case I got hungry mid run.

I kept reading this as carrying a crock pot in a pack or something. I could totally destroy a bowl of hot chili or some pulled pork when i'm skiing
