Eastern Washington/WSU ns'er

Possibly going to be at WSU next year for school. Are there any skiers that consistently shred? And what mountain does said shredding occur at?

WWU is my first choice, I need to slay that Baker gnar. But they're slackin on my acceptance letter. I'm just seeing what my options are if I dont make it.

I'll probably also be going to WSU next year. Coming from Colorado, try not to hate, I know I'm leaving some sick skiing to go to eastern WA, but I liked WSU a lot when I toured it. Also, to the OP, I saw this on their website:
http://ski.wsu.edu/ski_faq.aspx

And there's a member on here who I think is/was on it. wazzucrewskier or something like that. Good luck man, maybe I'll see you next year.

My brother goes there, apparently there's some decent urban and there's snow on the ground most of the winter. Otherwise schweitzer is like 2 hours or whatever.

Dont know if you're talking to me or the OP, but I plan on majoring in physics. I toured WWU as well, and talked with their physics majors and professors, and its just a really small program. They graduated like 4 physics majors last year. On the other hand, WSU has 9 different physics minors to choose from, as well as a physics teaching certificate, its a way bigger program.

ya I don't mean to hate on WSU too much. Mostly talking about activities in either cities. I think Pullman blows. And I also dislike the environment there as far a most the students. Bellingham, in my opinion, is a way cooler city and is closer to so many different things. When it comes to programs and what college is ACTUALLY for, I know nothing about it. But I also don't feel like that's what the OP was looking for anyway, as far as his question.I felt it on more of a social aspect.

I know you weren't even replying to me but whatevs

both small and large programs have their advantages.

smaller programs are more intimate, while larger programs have more resources available. Also a BS in physics from WSU and from WWU might not be valued at the same for grad school.

That said, I think the UW's physics program is top notch if you can make it through the first year prerecs.

this thread is a bit off track now, but oh well.
i go to wsu and i love it, and i ski at schweitzer almost every weekend. yeah, it's not very close, but i make it work.
and to the people that are claiming that wwu is the way to go, yeah, it's closer to baker, but if you're actually concerned about your education, which college is actually about, wwu really isnt held in high academic esteem. it's on the verge of community college status, and its shitty and raining almost all year long, so have fun with that.

sorry not all of us can afford to go to school in utah. but yeah, im sure its a good plan to lower one's standards for education in hopes that the recreational aspects will balance it out.

I'm calling bullshit in that last point. WSU is still a highly regarded research university. It may be easier to get into then UW, but to claim it is on the verge of community college status is bull.

I don't like WSU, and I go to WWU, I don't really like it either but I'll get raped around here for talking bad about WWU though. And WWU is way way better than WASU, at least for me, if that's worth anything.

im not. i honestly would have gone to WWU if it were simply based upon the surroundings/ski possibilities, but it's pretty evident that WSU is held in higher academic esteem than WWU, which is all i was saying.

we've been ranked in the top ten for our school of communications for over a decade, and we're one of the only schools in the state that puts out an advertising major as opposed to only offering it as a minor. during my internship in portland, it was made pretty clear that the main advertising agencies in washington, idaho, montana, oregon, and northern california are typically run by wsu students because our program is so much more rigorous in comparison to others.
i know that's only one example, but it applies to my field of interest, so it's all that really matters to me.

I don't want to be that guy, but where did you pull "top ten... for over a decade" from? I can't seem to find WSU on any ranking in the top 100, let alone top ten for comm. Everybody wants to say their program is ranked such and such, and that is fine when it is true, but I'm not seeing it. That is not to say it isn't a good program, especially around the Pacific Northwest, but comparing it to something like a Syracuse, Pennsylvania, Northwestern, or Columbia... biiiiiit of a stretch.
Oh, and WSU sucks

yep, that was me. i graduated in 09. hit me up with questions if you want.

hating aside, i felt wsu was the fit for me and i did not like western at all. just not my vibe. i ended up having an absolute blast at wsu. i like the small town because everyone there is going to the school and it makes it easy to meet other people.

wherever you do go though IT IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT. if you want to be lazy you wont have fun, but if you are trying to get involved and meet people to go up and ski it will be fun.

"It is what you make of it" seems fairly accurate now that I really think about it.
The academics at WWU aren't nearly rigorous enough, that's all I'll say here. Oh, I'm a finance major so I'm speaking for the CBE (college of business and economics) department, not other departments. I've found that it's too easy, wishing I would have cared more about the college I chose and wish I got into a good bette school or a private school. Damn not caring about grades in HS

truth. i mean everyone in this thread is obviously pointing out their personal preferences. i just think what might be the right thing for me might not be the right thing for you. sure i had a hell of a time at wsu and got a marketing degree an everything, but am not really using it at the moment answering phones at evo. but yeah, the best thing you can do is take a campus tour of all of the colleges you are interested in. i mean wsu isn't considered a school that is for skiers or whatever, but that doesn't mean you can't meet a ton of cool people that like to ski. literally every friend i made in college was from the ski team at wsu, and those people are damn near family for me now. im just saying wherever you do end up going you need to put some effort in and make it the experience you want, and then you will have an amazing time.

in my experience when i was in high school i was always like holy shit this is important and would try super hard, and then in college i looked back and was like high school was a joke. then in college i was like holy shit this is important and now looking back its the same thing. for the majority of jobs i don't really think they care where you graduate from so honestly just go do well in your classes and have some fun man.
