I live in MA and ski in NH and am so sick of how exploited and played out the EC scene has become. When the best part of the mountain is some shitty fucking playground for ballerinas at the bottom of the hill thats fucking weak. I'm sick of terrain park this and terrain park that. The fucking mountain is all that matters. Cuz when chemically altered gymnasts are all fucking busted up and doped out, and the terrain parks just get to lame to be around, the hill wil always be there. park rats will be a dying breed you watch, its a cyclical process. you see kids out there with al the new gear throwing thier misty flips and whatnot. but lets see them hold a bump line ya know? id rather ski with joe big mtn hucker skier, than the 234245234 tanner hall wannabees on thier twin tipped glamour sticks. not saying i dont like to hit jumps, and progress in the air. im just sick of the bullshit. now everyone and their fucking three legged dog just wanna hit the park and do the newest trick. where the fuck has all the skiing gone. thast why im gonna move my ass out to tahoe and ride gnarly shit cuz you cant disco shake your way down a gnarly chute with a mandatory huck. im not totally against park skiing, cause thats where its progressing and thank god out sport is. Park is all the east has and its ggetting way outa hand. The best park trick is the fat chick (straigh outa high north (back flip 180 tail cross while grabbing your sac)) so to the rest of us east coast pussies. get out and ski more of the mountain the park will die but the mtn will always be there learn to ski everything. bitches

i dont agree at all.. park is where its at and people ski park not to take after their favorite skier or for the glamour but b/c thats what they identify with and think is fun and its what they enjoy, not tha i dont like doin bumps i love zipping aline and skiing outta boundfs at stowe. but i ski mostly park at mt snow and thats where its at in the east i also am from mass but make the drive to mt snow

powder and BC is better, but not every east coast resort has that, and for the people who dont ski at a challenging resort, the park is usually the only good thing

 
Its true that 'big mountain' is where skiing's roots are and always will be... but the passion for skiing the whole mountain in the east is definately not dead... Listen to EastCoastPride and go to Stowe, Jay, Tuckerman's, MRG, Smuggs, Cannon, or Sugarbush and you'll see it. You gotta admit the park scene is going off, and its a great thing for the east with our weather. So relax, theres still all-mountain riding in the east, it just isn't glorified like the park stuff.

 
I semi-agree. I think skiers should be more well rounded, and be able to ski everything on the mountain including the double blacks and the parks. Also if you can ski everything it makes it easier to progress because your more in control of you skis, i dunno. But thats why all the Euro's are so good, because they ski everything, not just the park.

I am from the east. You suck ass. Terrain parks are a part of the mountain for people who want to be there, if you dont like them, dont ski in them.

Being Irish, I guess I should resent the Notre Dame nickname 'The Fighting Irish.' After all, how long do you think nicknames like 'The Bargaining Jews' or 'The Murdering Italians' would last? i agree and disagree, im aware that east coast has nothin to offer as far as bc so its a rare occurance that someone out east gets to ski the big shit

now just because u dont have big lines available dosnt mean u should be a park rat, u can still learn all the fundamentals of skiing on a groomer, maybe not powder, but just about everywhere gets a powder day at least once out of the year, and when that day comes u should ski the pow because the parks gonna be there tomorow

i agree that park rats will be a dying breed, look at the pros now, they are all taking stuff into the bc in someway, at least the ones that are gonna still be getting payed for the next few years, even out here in utah, where there is insane bc available for 4 months out of the year minimum, there are still park rats, to me a park rat is someone who may be able to do some stuff in the park, but cant do anything for there life anywhere else on the mountain, and in my minds eye, park rats are not skiers, they are just kids with sticks on their feet that can hit jumps and do flippy spinny things, park rats have little to no future in the sport

so if u would consider urself a park rat, dont be proud of it, go out and take a lesson or somthin, or at least try to become a half decent skier, because if u can do a switch rodeo 9 but u cant ski down a simple powder face, no sponsor will ever pick u up, besides zeal optics

A newschoolers site is not really the place to be complaining about this. But there are plenty of mountains in the east that have good skiing and no just the park. Teddy names a bunch and I think Sugarloaf on powder days (and not) is a great place to ski. So shut up, I don't think you are going to win this arguement. In fact I think you already lost.

I also have to agree and disagree. There is definately a place for the park. In my opinion, the park is where you should be learning tricks, helpin eachother out, and progressing the sport, not necessarily showboating. Honestly, the way that skiing looks to be going is to bring the newschool style all over the mountain (where ever possible) and especially into the back country.

Granted the East doesn't have much in comparison to BC, we don't have the snow, we don't have the terrain, but if you don't look for it, you'll never find it. Some of the most fun I've had here on the east is taking a snowmobile into the woods, and clearings and building/hitting jumps, and finding new places.

There are also too many times that I see people too focused on skiing park only. The better your fundamentals are the better your park skiing is gonna be. In my opinion I'd rather ski hard all over the mountain and pull the sickest shit I can where ever I can, rather than to hang out in the park and miss everything else that the mountain has to offer.

 
i live in the east and i ski all mountain all the time. i would probobly be better if I lived out west but i dont think I would do it any more than i do now because i do mostly all mountain stuff and i mostly do park when i go with my friends to thier mountains

i fuckin live in the east coast. i live at a small mountain in western ny. do you think i have a fuckin chance to hit big moutain. i ski glades when i get abourt 2 inches of snow thats prolly the closest thing to big mountain in ny. all the east can do is make up for the skii;ng by making a park.

There's a reason the East Coast always had a reputation for being good, limit pushing skiers. We get fed up with the lack of terrain and snow, so we push harder when we get it (out west, and even some places in the East) and we are also typically, fundamentally better skiers, because we have to be (lovely East Coast conditions).

The East Coast was always about skiing for the love of skiing and not about showboating. I think its unfortunate that the East Coast is now starting to showboat (wether its snowbunnies skiing a wedge in $10,000 worth of clothing and equiptment at Stratton or Killington, or wether its people showboating what they can do in the parks at a home stomping grounds). The East Coast reputation of old is ours to let go or take back.

So what if you can do all these tricks in a park, the park is as close to a perfect world as you are gonna get in skiing. Its what you can do on the snow (all over the mountain, in-bounds, out-of-bounds, backcountry) that matters, and that is what the East Coast reputation used to mean, at least to me.

why do you care so much about what other people prefer to ski. your argument is ridiculous my friend. if you get so worked up over somebody skiing park all day because thats what they like then you need to open your eyes. people have different takes on skiing and thats what makes it so special. there is incredible variety in our sport and if you cant see that then mabye you shouldnt be skiing in the first place.

also yes the park scene is bigger in the east for obvious reasons. we dont have 16,000 foot tall mountains that get tons and tons of snow each year. i think the highest mountain in vermont is killington which is only 4,800 something(i think, dont hold me to that) we ski on what weve been dealt and we have a good time. if you dont then leave and make the east a better place for all of us.

The best guys on the mountain are old, fast, have a racing background, hit the park when their bored, ski the BC usually, and do your girlfreind while your not looking. Your argument is gay. Just go ski.

well Hugh, I'd disagree, I'd say the best on the mountain are the guys/gals, from about 16-30, that have skied their whole lives, raced some, free skied mainly, and always pushed the limits of their abilities because they were bored and have no fear. Granted the older race guys can be pretty good, but honestly, they typically have no flow. And if got no flow, then you have no unique style, and with no unique style, you may as well be a pre-programed robot sking down the hill.

I've seen way too many people (especially instructors, patrolers, and racers) that ski very well by the book and if all they ever strive for is the 'perfect' turn, they miss the point of skiing, having fun, challenging yourself, and expressing yourself on the snow.

fuck yeah the east is more of a 'fashion show' than out west- look at all the east coast skiers on this site, the vast majority of them are concerned about park skiing, and park skiing these days is all about image. most of the west coast skiers on the other hand are more concerned with actual riding instead of spraying about how awesome they are in the park. im not saying that i have a problem with east coast skiers and the image that they try to project, but that's the way it is. come out to a resort like jackson hole or big sky, and you'll see that the locals at those resorts could give a flying fuck about image...they're their to ride and that's it.

I would have to disagree with the point being made by some that all Easterners are just park skiers, that's just an assumption made because there aren't big mountains out here. Sure there is a larger park concentration but that's not what everyone is all about. I know that I'm not the only you can find skiing lines on Lincoln Gap or where ever. And even so, what the hell is your point? East coast kids spend more time in the park because we don't have much else place to go... that's not a choice. It's called making due with what you have presented to you.

Ok, I never said that all easterners were park skiers, I said that the VAST MAJORITY of them are. And I think that you're thinking that I have something against east coast skiers- I don't, I'm just saying that it is apparent that many east coast skiers are concerned with their image, mainly becuase most of them are park skiers.
