East Coast Mid Fat Ski

I'm looking for a ski in the 100-110mm waist range to use on fresh snow days on the east coast. I'll be skiing sugarbush, mad river, stowe, and jay mostly. I was looking at the new Armada TSTs and the Line Sir Francis Bacon. Or possibly the Kung Fujas or Shoguns. I'm 6'2" 215lbs so I'm gonna get something in the high 180s or low 190s. I'd like to have at least a little rocker in them. I'll be using these on the deepest days only pretty much and not in the park at all. So what do you guys like?

Dammit I gotta go through this again...haha.....for two of yas now no less....OP and the threadjacker.....I'm 6'1" 195.....I'm rockin the opus....it's super badass for what you want...real good in the trees....and it can also handle hardpack and groomers....it's my favorite ski ever....if ya have more questions about that ski.....type it into the searchbar on ns....there's a few threads where I went into decent detail.

any thoughts on the jj for east coast pow/trees? the Opus seems a little soft for my liking and the jj is much stiffer and in a similar waist range

The opus isn't that soft actually....the tails are stiff as shit....you can really drive em....the tip is stiff till about midway up then it softens a bit....but nothin like the ep pros were....when I tell ya you can charge the opus down groomers I'm not kidding...I really think it's marketed all wrong.....peeps think pollard pro model and the associate the ep pro noodle factor.....the opus is a totally different ski all together....it's like they took all the "go anywhere" feel of last years bacons and made it even better.....also everyone who doesn't understand how this ski is constructed keeps sayin "185 isn't long enough"......when actually it has less rise in the rocker than most rockered skis and has about the same effective edge as a 190 rockered ski....I seriously think line mis-marketed the opus and doesn't yet fully realize just how versatile a ski it is....they intended to make it that way for sure....I just don't think they understand that yes, the average Joe non pro type can ride it anywhere.....you mark my words.....by the end of this upcoming season you'll see just how much influence the opus is going to have on skiing as a whole.....I really think it's gonna change the idea of what a ski that wide is capable of and that you can make an amazing 110+ waist a quiver of one ski.

As far as the jj goes.....and I'm only basing this on reviews because I haven't ridden it.....they say it's an amazing pow ski.....it's getting scores equal to or slightly higher than the opus all around BUT, if you look at the breakdowns, the reason it's getting such high scores is based in it's pow ability....it scores lower than the opus for versatility and control on hardpack......whereas the opus gets just under perfect scores all around....so if your only doing backcountry I think the jj is probably superior.....if you need to hit a groomer or some windblown crud chop crap on your way to the lift line or you wanna ride it on a non snow day as well the opus is superior cause it can handle it all.

what do you guys think about surface live lifes? I got a chance to ski them for a week in utah last year and i loved them for everything. I'm just kind of unsure of how they would handle super tight trees/ spring slush.

186 Jeffrey

108mm underfoot

Rocker Tip/tail, camber underfoot

Bamboo and carbon fiber construction

Fits the bill pretty nicely...

I have to stick with more of the major brands because i can get some deals on them from my shop. also armada and 4frnt. So right now I'm thinking I'm gonna go with something in the 115 waist range because I have 4frnt MSPs as my all mountain shredder and if i get something under 110, i don't want to just replace them. So I'm looking at the JJ, Opus, Obsethed,Czar, 4frnt CRJ, and LibTech Pow NAS. Help me pick pleaseeee

I'll say this....I demoed a few of the lib techs and was not a bit impressed...got a buddy who rides their snowboards and loves em but I hate to be so blunt...their skis suck dude.....seriously....I get what they're goin for and I'm not tryin to badmouth the company but they aren't fun......jus demo them and you'll see what I mean

I'm a real big fan in general of armada's line but if there is one ski in their lineup that i think is just utterly amazing beyond the competition is the jj. theres a reason why guys like tanner hall and ian provo ride em (besides the fact that they are payed to haha). It sounds like you are less concerned about getting around on hardpack mostly because you have an all mtn ski already and also because youre skiing the only places in new england that get consistently good snow from mother nature. I would say as has been pointed out that the jj is gonna do well, not amazing, but proficient enough on the hard pack and what not but even more importantly its gonna absolutely kill it in the pow and trees, which is what it sounds like your buying this ski to do.

this seems like a pretty wide variety of skis...i think you need to pin down what kind of terrain you're going to be on 80% of the time and how stiff/soft you like them.

Out of all those you mentioned....honestly you should only be considering the opus and the jj.....plus I'll throw in one more monkey wrench....the atomic bent chetlers.....those three....personally for versatility's sake I'd say just between the opus and the chetlers but beings that your so undecided, perhaps some demos are in order.....just because one person loves one ski doesn't mean it'll translate to your style.....that said though I doubt you'll go wrong between those three skis....good luck!

the JJ's and Opus are definitely the favorite right now but I'd like to get a little more insight on the CRJ before I just pass them up. How does their stiffness compare to the other two? Also I will be using these on fresh pow days only for the most part but i would definitely like them to handle well on hard pack too

Well then, there's your answer.....dude go to the nimbusindependant site and watch some of the vids of what pollard was doing on the opus.....also check out lineskisyo channel on YouTube and there's one of the recent uploads of one of lines French reps riding the opus in chile after that huge storm a few weeks back......that vid alone will give ya a skigasm for the opus!

no offense mountainviper but you ramble like an old man. hah

anyway, I'd say go with the TST. whips around like a soft ski but is stiffer for when things get meh.

"no offense" typically is proceeded with something offensive....haha....but it's all good....I am an old man....mid thirties...so I didn't grow up learnin how to talk in two line blurbs ya know?

I went to Jay 3 time last year, whit my JJ's, they were perfect. Great float, easy to turn in the trees.

Was in the same boat last year. 184 Nordica Zeros, zero camber 104 underfoot could not be happier. Great for absolutely charging; only thing is that I am going to through some Dukes on this year

probably too short. The longest 186 actually measures like 181-2 and they are quite soft in the shovel.

TSTs seemed like a great east coast pow ski if you don't care about riding switch. People love the Völkl Gots in mixed conditions over here in europe too. I found them too stiff personally but I just like soft skis better.

Moment PB&Js also sound kinda like what you want from the Blister Reviews, my experience of moment has been all good but I haven't skied PB&Js.

You did learn how to talk with horrible grammar and no sentence structure, though. I didn't realize 5-10 periods were needed.

Christ dude you weigh 215 lbs, don't get a noodle. Get something reasonably stiff.

^agreed. and i feel like you need to figure out your top two and demo them as soon as you can so your size is still available. lots of people (obviously) have different experiences with these skis and the only way you are going to know is by testing them out. sounds like you might want to stick with the jj (do the 195, stiffened up this year) or crj for what you typically ski. good luck!

Sentence structure?....grammar?....whoa ya freaked me out for a second there!....thought we were on TGR.....and yes 5-10 periods are necessary....interesting that you don't get why though......so what does that say about you huh?.....out of the loop are we?

You make absolutely no sense. I hope you're not older than 15 otherwise I'd be pretty embarrassed right now.

Good luck on that man. From all I've seen i think you'll be good either way. I can def vouch that the opus is legendary but after hearing all the hoopla about this years jj, I'm def gonna give it a demo if I see it.
