East Coast Kids - West Coast Colleges

I'm a junior in high school now, and I think it's time i seriously start looking at colleges. My aunt and uncle have lived in colorado since I was born, and everytime we would visit there it would just seem to get better and better, and now that I'm addicted to skiing, my passion to go to college there has become even stronger.

I just wanted to hear what some people from the east coast had to say about their college experience in the west coast, whether it be colorado, utah or w/e. I really just wanna learn what it's like and if you really enjoy it.

i would love to go away to the west coast for college. but i dont know if i could leave my parents/freinds for like months at a time...that would be tough.

no you should definately go

i definately want to go out west for college maybe cmc or univ. boulder

im in the exact position you are. with relatives out west, and me being a junior...the west seems awesome.

im looking pretty hard at utah.

you always hear about how succesful people are that didnt go to college. well thats the few that will actually tell you about it.

go to a mcdonalds, and ask them about their story.

thats exactly how i feel, i think im just gonna go someplace near the best east coast skiing

yea i understand that too, and if my sister wasn't graduating college this year i wouldn't even think of leaving my mom home by herself. but since my sister is graduating and maybe going for her masters, she would probably be home with my mom all the time.

as for leaving my friends i wouldn't care that much because i know no matter what college they go to, they would rather visit me and go skiing, so i'm sure i'd get to see them a lot. and also i really wanna meet new people and see new things. if i had the money and opportunity to take a year off after graduating high school and travel around the US and other countries i would def do it. i mean why wait until you're older and retired to see the world when you can't do as much. life can come and go quickly as i just unfortunately witnessed, but the one thing i'm glad about is that my dad took the time to travel and spend money, rather then save it.

but since i can't take a year off and do that, i'd still like to meet new people and experience a whole different way of life.

great schools are not as common in the west as they are in teh east coast

but there are plenty

and some of those areas are absolutely sick

i was also thinking that i could go to an east coast school and do the study in utah for a semester program from the ad in freeskier, it says you get 70 days of skiing in and you wouldnt be away from everybody for as long as if you went to a west coast school

two great colleges to go to are university of utah and cu boulder. sweet skiing next to both of them but utahs pretty sick, its way close to skiing

i applied to colo college...small school though...you do liek 2 weeks on, 1 week off, whihc is sicky gnar

im in the same situation as you, i want to go out west, and im a junior. however my parents said there is no way im going to college out of state because we can only afford the in-state tuition. which is bullshit because i think im rich as shit. me parents are just pricks and want to save up to buy a 49 foot yacht to live on after they retire

where was that. if it's what it sounds like that could probably be the ideal situation, although i think i would still like the whole atmosphere of staying out west.

well i dont know shit about colleges out west, but i know that colorade university or somthing (the one with the green ram), they are like 3 hours to decent skiing. im a junior with and uncle in denver. im actually psyched to go to Champlain College in burlington VT, or st. michaels bomb schools near bomb mountains...i get all i need without spending my left leg for the cash needed. EC fo lyfe...with the occasional trip out west

Not quite, they have 3.5 week blocks. I don't know if you've been to the campus there yet, but they designed all the buildings like a prison to prevent riots. However, the area is really sweet because it's in a nice section of town and you can ride a bike to the garden of the gods and go rock climbing.

Colorado isnt on the west coast, its in the middle of the country. If you want a college to go skiing at go to CU Boulder or Westren State in Gunnison, CU is about an hourish away from about 6 ill resorts (breck, keystone, a-basin, echo mountain) and Westren state is about a half hour away from Crested Butte

Go to California. Sure none of the schools there are that close to the skiing but they're all way better and plus you're in California.

yea i know it isn't on the actual west coast, i just meant to say "west." i was looking at CU boulder, but i also wanted to get some other opinions too from kids that eother go there or have gone there.

I did a lot of research for going to school out west in regards to skiing and stuff... basically, I looked at Utah, Bozeman, and CU Boulder as the best choices, and eliminated some lesser ones like UC Davis.

Bozeman:

Skiing: Awesome, and really close.

Parties: Good, but nothing on Boulder.

Education: Depends on your field, from mediocre to great.

Utah:

Skiing: Amazing, edges out Montana by a little in terms of closeness and quality.

Parties: Uhm... not so much. They exist, but Utah is a big commuter school, and given Utah's religious orientation... you'll be hardpressed.

Education: Good. Depending on the field, probably on par wih Bozeman.

CU Boulder:

Skiing: Ok, it's a huge commute to get to the resorts and traffic is terrible, but the skiing is definitely very good.

Parties: Among the best in the nation. And the girls... oh, the girls...

Education: Probably the best overall education.

I ended up going to Montana because of the skiing. However, I have a friend in Boulder and, based on what he's told me, am considering transferring.

You're lucky you caught me while I'm bored as hell... that's like a novel up there.

I dont go there but ive been there sevral times and i have a ton of friends that go there. Its a huge school like 25,000 undergraduate students. The biggest club at CU is the ski club so you know there are a shitload of skiers, the campus is gorgeous (some ill rails). And it has some pretty dang good academic creds to.

wow thanks, that is pretty much exactly what i was looking for. parties aren't my main concern being that i'm not exactly a party kid (who knows that could change though). i do know that i would probably like a big school like boulder because i come from a pretty big high school, and i love it, and would love to see new people everyday and get to know a lot of different people. as for academics, i'm not sure what i'd like to do, but i know that my mom would like me to go to a place that would give me a good education. and for skiing, that would be one of my main reasons for going west to school, but i'm sure i wouldn't mind too much about the hassle of getting to a mountain. i'm sure it's a lot better than a 2 and a half hour drive to get to a "mountain" that has like 20 runs.

im a sophomore n dont no shit bout colleges or ne of that and live in north carolina with shitty hills...n i want to go out west for college or to vermont but for out of state tuitino i dont no...is it true that if you live in a state for a yeatr that u get instate tuition? im thinkin about doin that after highschool then goin to college somewhere n comuunity college b4 that if i cant get n

here's my other situation. paying for plane tockets to get back and forth would be a bitch and really expensive. but i'd probably be able to do it since tuition looks a lot cheaper at CU boulder than where my sisters go to. on the site it said for non-residents it was like only 10 or 15 thousand i think, and both my sisters are like over 30ish.

another question i had is about scholarships. i play baseball and consider myself able to play at a competitive college level, and i was just wondering if state schools like boulder would give either academic or athletic scholarships. that would help a lot too.

You have your SAT scores? Bozeman gives out-of-staters obscene amounts of money to people who score well on the SAT, but pretty much no matter what you score you're guaranteed to get some money. Between room and board AND tuition AND expected book costs, I'm at 16k/year. Not sure how Boulder handles that kind of stuff.

As for baseball, I don't think Boulder has a very competitive baseball team... may be wrong, can't say I've researched it, but that's my impression. If that's the case, you can probably get some money from them on that. If you go to a school with a better team, you may make it, but if you're just another average player they won't give you too much money. If you go to a school with a weaker team and are, thus, one of the stronger players, you have a pretty good chance of scoring some green.

yea. I'm at USC, and the ski team has a house in Mammoth. Sure, its 5 hours away, but we still go every weekend.

yea i didn't think they had a very strong baseball team, but like you said, there would be an upside to that. of course i'd love to go pro, but unless i really start working like crazy now, i doubt i'll get that chance.

but yea, i don't want to brag or anything, but my school just won the new york state championship last season for baseball and we're ranked like 12 in the nation or something and we beat the number 5 team in the nation. (i'm not saying i had much to do with that, but our school is good). so hopefully like you say, if i am one of the better kids on the team, i would be able to get more scholarship money.

haha my sister goes to USC for her grad courses and she takes them at home, in pittsfield, MA

ok nvm about tuition being really cheap i must've been looking at something else. it's like 25 g's or so for non-residents.

yea i understand.

and i hate when i say i live in new york everyone thinks new york city. ( not saying that happens here, just in general)

adn 10 years from now youll be sittin on the side of the road with no money, not skiing, and we throw the ocassonal penny

or you might get involved in a kick-ass career that you dont have to go to college for and start at $125,000 right out of highschool.
