how did these comps get organized in the first place? I was think how cool it would be to have a pacific northwest freeskiing open, and i need some ideas on how to get it started

chris, its probably the explosion of east coast skiing around here...every year one more major comp shows up, last year vt open, this year ec open

maybe anthony, but somebody had to step up and say 'hey we should have a big f-in comp for skiers' and organize sponsors and shyt

I attended both, the EC Open was FREEZE's attempt to keep up with Freeskier and the VT Open, the EC open sucked ass...for one they didn't have a slopestyle event, second point is they had crossmax. VT Open rules the EC Open with an iron-fist.

P.S. -- The two biggest magazine's in the freeskiing world fund these competitions along with many other sponsors like Smith...this shit is not cheap

I live in Dirty Jersey. I curse... a lot. I say -yo- and I say it often. I sure as hell dont pump my own gas. I know a bagel is much more than a fuckin roll with a hole in the middle. I judge people by what exit they live off the parkway. I can navigate a circle... with attitude. Two words-- mother fucker. I dont go to the beach, I go down the shore. I know that 65 mph really means 80. When someone cuts me off, they get the finger... and they expect it. I ride ice and i dont mind, 6 inches of snow is heaven for me. Im a Jersey Kid..

theres a few things you can do

if your in school, see if your college offers an 'event management' class. you;ll learn a lot.

second, you can just make it happen.

you need a venue, a date, sponsors, a company that will take on the liability factor and a way to promote.

i;d say the easiest way for you to get the ball rolling would be to start networking your way around the block and meet up with the people who set up these events, ask as many questions as you can.

For my first few events, i was lucky enough to have an internship boss guy who was super stoked on what i wanted to do, he helped me in everyway he can. I also dealt directly with the parks and recreation department to see what kind of assitance they could provide and it turned out that those crazy rednecks are good people.

your biggest problem is going to be in securing money for the prizes, as well as paying for the infrastructure of the event. Beer companies have the dough, but some venues don;t want to be assoiciated with a bunch of drunks.

why would you need a 'pacific northwest open'? you have the US freeskiing open out there on the west coast, and the pacific northwest is not THAT far from whistler, aka other comps.

The Vermont Freesking Open was created by freeskier, probably because other than that the biggest comp I can think of on the east coast is the grail.

 
chris, why would they wanna organize one huge comp...freeze is out to get as much cash as they can at the east coast open. i was so unimpressed and amazed by the way the freeze staff operated the comp (and its not just me, half the Okemo staff, including the events manager, were extremely pissed at how they roll in and pretend like theyve been there forever, being extremely rude to all the okemo staff in the process)

as long as people pay to enter, theres gonna be at least two major contests

the grail has gotten considerable less interesting every year, due to some bad weather, repetition...the VT open is still the flagship comp on the easy, best talent, best terrain, just more entertaining. it helps they use the same park as the US Snowboarding Open too

First year for the EC open, so give it a break. Hopefully next year more pros will come and skiers like mike wilson and DC will be back.

 
corkwormturn, i dont know where you got the idea that whistler has open freeskiing comps, they dont. Unless you count the sprite park rider series which i dont, because there weren't even any prizes.

We need a comp like this because there is a ton of talent in oregon, washington, and idaho that gets no recognition, we need a venue to show the world what we've got.
