Earthquake a Month? Is this the next new trend?

sucks for haiti and all of a sudden chile? 8.8 is a big fucking earthquake only a month after haiti was devasted....
Shout out for those in Chile, I hope to go skiing there one day.

Probably California but the last one only killed a motorcycle cop and knocked over some stuff in Northridge so I'm not too worried.

OMG GLOBAL WARMING!

seriously. earthquakes happen pretty much everyday, all over the world. Its not like something has happened for them to happen more frequently, they always have, and always will be a part of the earth we call home, as long as the tectonic plates are still active. (which will be until the earth is eaten by a black hole)

haha were all beat, I've been reading this book about the end of the world and it explains how natural disasters are going to start happening more often and more powerful than before. not saying its true but it could happen.

most of California's infrastructure (and any region that lies on a major fault line in north America) has been had retrofit with seismically qualified building materials (as per code).

The reason why the quakes were so bad in Chile and Haiti is because of the poor building and construction quality. EVERYTHING got destroyed there, and unfortunately, they lack the necessary funding to rebuild their infrastructure properly (unless someone ponies up some serious dough).

just as a quick heads up, people have been praising chile's building code because the power of a 8.8 quake should have done a RIDICULOUS amount of damage more so than what happened down there
chile has had something silly like 8 or 9 earthquakes that were 7+ in the past 40 years, one specifically after i was born in Santiago that killed like 20k people (not sure if my birth mother was one of those)
but so far the worst areas are seemingly pretty bad but still not really on par with what happened in haiti, alot of major structures are still keeping together, i just hope they get (read: ask for) the necessary help to rebuild and restructure as quickly as possible

There are several factors that contributed to the difference in loss of life.

-Depth of the earth quake

-Building techniques

-Proximity to densely populated areas

If an 8.8 quake was close to the surface near a populated city, no matter how you build the structures everything is coming down. There are several faults in the Pacific North West as well a a giant fault under Yellowstone. The last time it released its energy the Mississippi River ran backwards.

I do not have a degree in geology much less the study of earth quakes but it seams to me that earth quakes close to each other could be the trigger to releasing tension and more earthquakes. Just an idea but I wonder if something deep in the earth with tremendous pressure could be communicating with these faults and causing them to slip. That would explain the multiple earthquakes.

everybody said the world was going to end when they tested the hadron collider shitall came of that

i seriously doubt anything will come of some mayans calender ending

>implying 2 earthquakes in 2 months has never happened before, and that it implies any sort of trend.

The San Andrea's Fault off of vancouver island is said to go off anytime. Could be tomorrow, could be in 100 years. I hope your wrong about your theory that one earthquake triggers the next. Apparently since an earthquake hasnt happened in the San Andrea's Fault in so long that the next could be a massive one. That would be a huge tidal wave on vancouver island.

I go to school in socal and weve been getting a couple earthquakes a month, its ridiculous, theres never been so much earthquake activity before. The world is ending, enjoy it while it lasts.

I live in socal and the last earthquake i remember was like 2 years ago and all it did was break a water mane in Northridge. It was really funny because like every local news station on tv were all covering the same thing and it was just a flooded instersection.
Earthquakes aren't shit. A tv did fall on me and nearly kill me in the '94 earthquake though. But fuck earthquakes, I ain't scared of no earthquakes.
I don't know about a couple a month. I always sleep through them though and I don't watch the news so maybe.

maybe he should just go back to earth science..
OP, you obviously do not have a very good grasp on plate tectonics

There's only 1 per year in the 8-8.9 range and Chile's earthquake was pretty close to the 9 range, which is 1 per 20 years. This is not a common event by any means.

2012

There are normally 26,281 earthquakes between .1 - 10.0 magnitude each year on average

So far this year there have been 2010 earthquakes in that range. At this rate we will only have 8040 earthquakes by the end of the year.

You mean San Andreas? It's a massive fault and yeah no one really knows when shit will hit the fan, but I believe the last quake it cause was the one in San Francisco in the late 80s. I'm not sure of the exact year, but that Earthquake is the reason my parents met, so I fucking love Earthquakes.

yah kids; earthquakes are totally caused by global warming....
-NOT!
+ its not global warming but climate warming....

uh what? Do you actually think I'm serious about believing those kinds of stupid things.
I'm only 17 but don't think I don't have a good grasp of these things.
Plate tectonics cover the earth. There are many plate tectonics and they float on magma constantly moving. They are responsible for earthquakes, volcanos and the formation of our planet out of the original Pangea. When two plates move away from each other, magma spews out of the crack forming volcanos, islands, mountains, etc. There are different kinds of earthquakes, some are formed when one plate tectonic moving parallel to another gets caught, gets energy and releases in a spring loaded fashion. The Himilayas and many mountain ranges are formed when two plate tectonics collide and push up into mountains. Sometimes, when they collide, one might dive down under the other, there is friction between the two plates and sometimes the moving one diving under gets caught and builds up energy until it moves suddenly as an earthquake.
The reason I mentioned the San Andreas fault is because a major earthquake hasn't gone off there in a while as one of the tectonic plates diving under has been held in place for a while. It's been building up energy and will one day cause a major earthquake. Who knows what will trigger that earthquake.
Now, this 17 year old off of the top of his head knows enough, some of that might be slightly incorrect, but im sure enough that i have the general grasp

fyi
the san andreas fault is a transform fault, there is no subduction; the plates are moving parallel to eachother but in a different direction...
also because there hasn't been an earthquake in a specific place doesn't necessarily mean the next one is gonna be the big one...
plates move at a virtual constant rate; only the very edges get caught against eachother and move with the so called stick-slip mechanism...
let's say the plate moves 3cm/year; in a catastrophic year you've had 10minor quakes, each moved the plate edge 1mm further and you've had one giant quake that moved the plate edge 2cm^^10smooth quakes and 1 mother ffing big one!
or in a good year, you've had 30 minor quakes, every minor quake moved the fault 1mm further...^^30smooth quakes that caused harm to nobody...
so in each year you've had 3cm of plate that has moved through the fault and released all his energy...1year was catastrophic and the other one wasn't, while all that happened was virtually identical....

Media's just amping shit up. There's earthquakes all the time.

Check outhttp://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/

Why do you think you see commercials saying the movie "2012" saying its the "BEST DISASTER MOVIE EVER MADE"

The movie was no where near amazing. They want ppl to see it so everyone's thinking 2012 for some reason.

Then we're all gunna see the media amping up any and every natural disaster.

And even if there is some rise in natural disaster increase in the next 2 years, they just want ppl to panick and think ill rationally.

Panicking ppl dont think for themselves they look for help, look to get told what to do.

So if shit goes down, the more people that panic, the easier it is to control the masses.

Fear fear fear fear fear. Fear the future.

Fear opposes love. If you fear the future nothing will change. You will be controlled by your fears.

If you look for love and listen to your instinct, break through your fears. The world will change.

Fear is a form of control. They love to use it.

PS- Watch out for those terrorists.

shut the fuck up you dirty hippy. we don't need your tree-hugging bullshit stinking up the place, ya dig?

Fear is related to a number of additional cognitive and emotional states including worry, anxiety, terror, horror, panic, and dread. Experiences of fear can remain long after exposure in the unconscious mind, where they may then manifest as nightmares, or, in an even stronger form, night terrors. Fear may also be experienced within a larger group or social network, and may be compounded by social influence and become mass hysteria. Some pathologies related to fear (defined by persistent and irrational fears) can include different types of anxiety disorder which are very common, and also other more severe illnesses like the extreme phase of bipolar disorder and some kinds of schizophrenia.

Im just trying to give little heads up here and there. It's been used for hundreds of years in the past by those in power.
