Earthle

How many times do use Google in a day? A week? A month? A year? Do you ever think how much energy you use by just using Google? Mark Ontkush, a leading expert in "green" computing says that if you took the amount of time on Google of every person in the world and added the time together it would add up to 550,000 hours every day on average!
Mark thought a bit more about this and told Google about his findings. He also calculated that if they put a black background on Google it would save 3000 Megawatt-hours a year. In the end this would save about $75,000 a year of electricity for the world. You could say that isn't a lot of money but that could go to a good use. Google considered this and customized a new search engine called Earthle. It uses a black background and green writing (which is much more energy efficient). If everyone switched from Google to Earthle, the calculations above would become reality.
All this can be done simply by typing www.earthle.com instead of www.google.com (oh no! one more letter!!!) So the next time you are about to go to Google, think (and go to) Earthle. Even by making your homepage Earthle the black background is probably more energy efficient than your regular one.

Try it out!

i know but blackle is just a modification... earthle is the exact same thing with different colours... i like earthle better cuz it also still has the links up top and whatnot

thats actually pretty sick how much energy and money we can save by doing it, i just changed my favorite from google to earthle     everyone should do it, its the exact same just black and it says earthle

So now the new campaign should be to petition newschoolers to change the white background on the forums cause I bet you spend more time on NS than google.

i would like to know why my post was deleted..?

i see where this guy is coming from and its great to try to protect the enviroment but..

isnt it just a little odd to recreate google with a black background?

Ok its cool and all to care for the environment and all but the fact of the matter is changing the fucking background of google makes no difference, why not try to do something actually important like change a incandescent light bulb to a compact fluorescent one or start recycling. - end rant

ummmm.....no. it saves energy and money. i dont know bout you but i love some extra cash in my pocket, while simultaneously saving the earth!

i actually do all that already. as well as use 100% green bin, take the public transit or bike everywhere all the time, and i think i might go tree planting this summer. so cry about it.

Dude everything adds up. You can do this in addition to the other ways in which you are energy conscious. I just read a stat that if everyone switched to this new google, or if google changed their standard search engine to a black background it would save enough energy to power the state of Pennsylvania.

That's a hell of a lot of energy, just from one website.

So I was doing some research on this..

It appears that this only works for CRT monitors, or those that use Cathode Ray Tubes. LCD monitors it makes no difference in energy due to the fact that your backlight is always on and it takes no more energy to show black or white.

For CRT though, it takes more energy to display brighter colors. So ya, it doesn't work for LCD screens, oh well. Not everyone is on LCD yet.

I may be wrong, but it may also take more energy for Google to run a white background as the server still has to run it with the white colour code rather than the black. Maybe I'm completely wrong, but it could be a possibility?

So sick. I'm a true believer that every little bit helps, and if I can make a tiny difference by searching on earthle instead of google then I'm glad to do it. I'm going to tell everyone I can about it.

no earthle.co.uk :(

do you know if this is gonna change, will there be a .co.uk or a .nz etc. ? cos I would definetly use it...

Ya I think they do, but I'm not positive on that.

And to GP_Skier, it doesn't take anymore or less energy for the server to run a black background compared to white, all it is is a change in the hexadecimal color code from "FFFFFF" to "000000".
