What are your thoughts and what will you be doing?

they couldn't have done it during the day?

also, hockey game is on.

but really, it's a good idea. but just one hour every year is pretty pointless

it would be a lot cooler if they coordinated it by timezone so it happened everywhere at once, instead of the west coast doing it 3 hours before the east. also, like mentioned above, it would be a lot less ridiculous to do it during the day so people arent sitting in the dark for an hour.

You could use candles. Doing it during the day wouldn't have as big of an impact (not that it will have a significant impact anyway) because most people don't use as much electricity as they do when it's dark out.

i know it wouldnt have as big of an impact, but its something more realistic for most people. you could also do an earth week, but no one would do that because its too difficult.

well I think the point is to raise awareness about our energy consumption. I mean clearly not using electricity for 1 hour is not going to do anything good for the environment.

I think if people had like parties and stuff, like really made an event out of it, you might remember it and it could help you remember how much we take energy for granted.

lol, the aliens watching earth would get so confused.

and the reason night is better is that it makes more of an impact. a lot less energy will be saved if people turn off their lights when its light out - theyre already off.

At least in 2010 in Gävle there was a real nice event during the hour, the central square was filled with choirs and acoustic instrument players, and the organizers were giving out long-burning candles to everyone.

I'm sure there are many events like that around the world. However, every single "minute", "hour" or "day" event may raise awareness, but it also detriments the cause in some ways. People who take part may actually think they made a difference by doing something simple and easy, which is basically doing nothing at all, leading to these whole KONY type "awareness" raising situations.

were you talking about me? Because I was clearly NOT trying to spread the message. I was asking what people thought of it...

This is a hilarious attempt at activism. It's a feel good symbolic event which has no effect on real energy issues and is mostly done by people trying to feel like they care. Who came up with this shit. It's as dumb as the don't buy gas for 1 day protest. 1 hour of no lights lol

Im not home all day, so I have about ten earth hours a day, five days a week. What more do you want!?

Aha i love George. Too bad he died.....

anyways they're was an ice age awhile back, and this planet was fuckin COVERED in ice. We have many geographical features because of those huge glaciers today. Where I live right now, was just a big chunk of ice. Lots of it. The valley my town is centered around used to be right the fuck FULL of glacial meltwater and now it is just a tiny tiny river. We are so worried about our beloved glaciers melting and warming up (and it does suck, be nice to let them chill here) but obviously, before heavy industry and the amount of carbon we put out today, the glaciers were still warming up, and melting.....

hahahaha fucking george carlin man. guy was actually brilliant. very crude sense of humor, but you can tell by the way he speaks that he's got a fuckin brain on him. and the funny thing is that he's absolutely right. it is just a bunch of self-interested liberals who want to make it seem like they give a fuck but don't really give a fuck. kony2012 **ahem.

i remember my dad introducing me to george carlin a long time ago. great stuff.

is this just your normal routine, or are you doing it as some sort of personal statement? Or are you just saying it online in an attempt to piss off people who have other views about resource use?

I don't think that it is conceit to think of us as having such an effect on the planet. Heavy industry such as oil drilling and much more is incredibly detrimental to the World eco-system. Look at Nigeria. In the early 1900s it was a vibrant country with numerous swamps and forests. Nowadays it is full of oil infested water black as tar (total oil spilled in Nigeria rivers and groundwater through runoffs is roughly 1000 times the BP spill). Now are you kidding me we aren't having an effect on our planet?????? It is wrong to think we aren't having an effect on our planet. We are the only known species to have such developed forms of communication, reasoning, and conscious thought.

Looking at various population graphs over the last 200-300 years our population has doubled over 5 times. Only 50 years ago world population was 2.5 billion people. Our dramatic increases has caused overuse of natural resources and incredibly harmful effects to the environment. Earth Hour is mainly to raise awareness having everyone turn off their lights for an hour would actually probably be more harmful than good due to the effect on the electrical grid. But due to not everyone participating it doesn't change much but does raise dramatic awarness. We owe it to our planet to not harm it excessively and take care of it.

And I'm done.

I don't want to put words in his mouth but I fail to see how not participating makes you intellectually superior.

In fact putting on a half-full dishwasher and driving two blocks seems doesn't seem very smart at all unless you needed the dishes done before the load was full, or you were buying to much stuff to carry home on foot.

I'm quite sure that participating in earth hour is independent of intelligence.

I really don't think the point is to raise awareness about global warming. I mean everyone knows that we are changing the climate.

I think the point is to make people think about their own energy consumption and how it affects the world. I mean when a lot of people complain about global warming, I think they are somewhat disconnected from the whole thing (like they don't realize that it is their own consumption that contributes to it).

It seems to me though that it is not very effective way to do this. Most people who do it will probably go back to their 7-planet lifestyles right after the hour. The people who will really try to change their lifestyles for the better, well they would have probably done it without an "earth hour". Still though, I think the people doing it mostly do have good intentions and are certainly not doing it to "inflate their egos".

oh p.s.

It has good intentions, but really falls short on any deeper objective or goal.
What is the use if we turn off the electricity for an hour.... just to turn it back on and continue on with our excessively wasteful lifestyles? The only thing that will be accomplished is that some people will be granted with the self-rewarding feeling that they've done something to "help" the issue at hand. How about a campaign that tackles at the root of the problem and teaches us how to reduce energy usage EVERYDAY.... as part of a new lifestyle.

***I also have a problem with people stereotyping all those that care about our Earth as "self-righteous environmentalists". I forget who said those exact words and I'm not singling you out, but the douche-bag "self-righteous environmentalists" just happen to be the most outspoken and the loudest. They represent a very very small percentage of environmentalists. Most of us are reasonable and just want long-term inter-generational equity for our world and all its creatures, humans included.

7 planet lifestyle... Sigh

And in response to your cheap political cartoon... What if we disadvantage our economies, and hurt the industries that sustain us in an effort to be ideological and fix a problem that is small in the grander scheme of things? We should always work to be cleaner, safer and more efficient and pollute less but we should never revert or feel bad for being advanced and we should in fact advance not condemn progress especially in oil, energy and big business its good for everyone. Climate change is natural and not controllable, pollution and good wildlife managment are the real environmental causes to campion in my opinion not climate change

But that's the thing. Was this earth hour about climate change alone, or about all of those issues which can ultimately be traced back to human over-consumption.

you're kind of what's wrong with the world. i must admit that i can't be get too close to really knowing the kind of person you are because all i really have to go on is your laughable amount of participation in any thread that might have anything to do with american partisan politics. But, based on the persona you give off here you seem to be an intelligent enough, if obviously a little too sure of himself and misguided, human being. even so, it's posts like this that make it pretty obvious you're just another white kid who lives in an idyllic world and so sees no reason why he should put in an effort to make it better.

sure, getting people to turn off their electricity for an hour might be a hollow endeavor, and it's not going to do much in the grand scheme of things, but you know what accomplishes a whole lot less?

"Crank up my heat (or AC depending on the weather). Take a shower until the hot water runs out. Turn on my TV. Crank up my radio. Cook a steak. Run the dishwasher half full. Start a load of laundry. Drive my car two blocks to the mini mart for my drink of choice that day. Laugh at an "activist" I will likely see along the way."

i can say that i agree with gc to a degree. the earth will be fine. it can handle a lot of shit, it already has, in the grand scheme of things we're not going to do much to it. but that doesn't mean we won't fuck it up for ourselves. the earth will let us run our course, but as for us? if we raise the sea level too far, if we heat up our atmosphere, if we clear cut all the forests, shit is gonna get fucked. not to mention all the flora and fauna of the world. a million years from now, none of it'll matter to the earth, it'll keep going like nothing happened, but i kind of think the life that's on earth now is pretty amazing, and might be worth not fucking up.

i also can't boast to being an environmental activist in any way. i waste energy like a fiend, i'm aware of it, but at least i have the decency to know that it's not something to be proud of.

now, based on your track record, i'm sure you could come up with some super dense article or some pointed question to turn this into a full fledged argument, but there's no chance i have enough time on my hands to write posts like this countering whatever you say, every time i open my computer. i more or less just wanted you to know that whatever you get out of posting your shit on ns, good to ya, but i think you pretty much embody a serious problem with western society. you come off as extremely self-centred and arrogant, and you seem to shit on anybody who isn't. and while i may have put in too much effort making this post, probably the beer typing, but i take solace in the fact that you've put as much or more effort into most of the posts i've seen you make.

You sound like an elitist prick. this is a perfect example of the environmental/ activist superiority complex that pisses so many people off.

Also, (not directed only at you but your post reenforces something people complain about alot)I find it funny how many people get annoyed that Woozy supports his arguments so well and is well versed on politics, seems to piss off a lot of generalizing know-it-all liberals who don't put in the effort to defend their position and then claim that Internet discussions don't warrant being able to prove their point and he's "taking it too seriously"

i agree with all you right wing high horse riders in this thread that earth hour is to inflate the ego of people who normally dont give a fuck

but, I want to go to school to study environmental science because i love being in nature and want to protect that for myself and future generations to enjoy. The damage we do to our planet just because it's cheaper to produce and consume a good without thinking of the consequences or attempting to be sustainable is sickening to me.
