Earth Hour

yea really, why do people have to hate? so sick of assholes sometimes. if you don't care, don't do it. end.

I just like to give people a hard time who diss on green movements.

I think it is so retarded to increase your carbon foot print....while you ski.

If you liked Florida and the Bahamas then yeah you might enjoy global warming.

All I am saying is...we know the earth is going to heat up for natural reasons, yes we can speed this process up by killing the ozone layer. But I don't know if I will be able to make it 2 or 3 million years till we go back in to an ice age that is following the natural heating of the earth.

actually, there is a NASA report showing the relationship between the number of sunspots on the sun and the temperature of the earth, and they said this natural cycle will give us cooler temperatures very soon.

dammit, i accidentally hit reply. But Ill find the article when I get some time. It's a good thing to read, regardless of your position.

The last ice age ended about 10 000 years ago, and the earth has gotten warmer and colder by turns since then. There has never been a period before when the earth warmed up this quickly. The idea that global warming isn't caused by humans and is "just an attempt to make you feel guilty" is propagated by industries, like the ones that make electricity for your lights, that release greenhouse gases and pollution that causes global warming, and they can disseminate that idea because they have lots of money to do so. Saying that global warming is a natural cycle in this case is like saying toxic gases like carbon monoxide, sulfur and other harmful gases that lower air quality and cause acid rain and health problems are naturally occurring, or that the millions of tons of garbage outside of waste treatment/recycling facilities on land and in the ocean is part of a natural cycle.

to clarify: I didn't mean they weren't naturally occurring, I meant that they don't occur naturally in such high volumes in the atmosphere ( unless of course there is some natural disaster like a volcano).

sorry for postwhoring, but also humans aren't really separate from nature in the first place, and creating huge buildings, complex machines for transportation and amassing huge quantities of wealth/resources and arguing about things like whether or not we are destroying the earth is probably part of human nature, so you could say global warming is natural after all, but it is still caused by humans. Cows also contribute a lot of greenhouse gas to the atmosphere (methane) but the reason there are so many cows is that humans raise them for food.

I'll just sleep an extra hour so my lights will be off from around 11 or so until 9 tomorrow morning. I'm not turning my lights off because everyone else is. How the fuck am I going to be able to see if I want to do something. Then again I do have my snuggie booklight.

netbook and router and fridge are the only things on now. so, yes, people do this.

Seriously, we should take it upon ourselves to do all we can for our world. Anyone hear how bad the ski seasons have been in the alps?

yeah for anecdotal evidence that means NOTHING.

speaking of anecdotal evidence that means nothing. MN had one of the coldest winters in a long ass time. if i remember correctly 30 some days below zero! (saw it on the evening news, sorry if the number is a little off)

for what reason my business teacher assigns papers due on sunday i will never know, needless to say i will be running my laptop, with extra monitor, TV and lights the whole duration of earth hour.

my dad is in the next room watching a movie, and since i can here every word i am pretty sure he has the surround sound volume cranked, and TV running, yeah im sucking the grid dry. :)

damn...if only everyone had participated in earth hour last year, then the euros would have more snow to ski on...

You being on the internet and using a computer truly defeats the purpose of the whole idea. This is the exact reason why I think things like this are retarded. If it takes everyone else doing something for you to make a statement you must not really care that much. Nothing is wrong with making a statement alongside the group but you shouldn't half ass it dude. I am probably going to plant my grape vines on monday. More for the purpose of making insanely sweet home made wine but I suppose I can claim a little carbon offset on it. If you really want to make a difference go plant a tree. I don't buy the claim that us producing co2 has caused this warming but I do see a little validity in the idea that the lack of trees has(the lack of trees being caused by us),

the point of earth hour is to get people to think about what they really need and what they don't. if someone gets about their 1 hour, they might realize that they can do without unnecessary power every night. it's just promoting awareness for the campaign.

good on them. i got all my lights off at work last night, boss wasn't too stoked for OH&S reasons but i think resource wastage on the commercial front is what really needs to change.

It's not about eliminating electricity usage. It's about eliminating unnecessary electricity usage. Using the internet is fine. Using the internet with the TV running behind, lights on in the whole house and the air conditioning system on full blast isn't fine.

I think people are missing the point. Use your resources, just don't waste.

go to the website. it's clear their point is to vote for earth and no to global warming.

if it was about only cutting of unnecessary lights off, then why are they calling for people to post videos and photos of what to do in complete darkness. they are calling for all lights, essential and nonessential to be cut off.

it ture that we are coming out of an ice age so all of the ice is melting but it is proven that humans are speeding it up but its just being blown up way more than it needs to be, the earth fixes itself and there is nothing we can do but try to help it

I was at work, but my dad had all the lights out. So when I got back the house was damn dark and there were some candles around. I had to take a piss damn bad though, and there weren't any candles in the bathroom, so I broke the rule for a bit...
But in case you people debating global warming (I might be making an ass of myself, having not read all the posts and all, so I don't know if that's what you're doing...) haven't done so before on NS, you should note that it never comes to an agreement. It can be fun, you can express your opinion all you want, but someone always has a different one...

Tis a good thing its getting coverage and highlighting the point of conserving energy.

Im just waiting for the grid to fail at 9:31 when it all gets switched back on

Yes, thank you. This is the mindset I was approaching it at. It's not really meant to have a large physical effect, but more show people that the individual can play a role in the large scheme of things. I was sitting at home, all the lights on, tv on that i wasn't even watching. I turned all that junk off and only used what I needed. Netbooks are great btw, and they are some of the most energy efficient computers to date

if i was an energy company (and some of them support earth hour), and people stopped using their lights and/or appliances so much, therefore costing my electric company/subsidiary a considerable amount of profit in bills, i'd just raise the rates, and not only punish the people who though they were making a difference, but also the people who weren't trying to make a difference. bwahahahaahaaahaaaa.

profit whore. but a business is a business. Imagine people took a day and decided not to eat fast food. Imagine how much our economy would suffer if the world went 1 day without fast food.
