Earth Day

Little things you can do...

40% of the energy on our energy bill is wasted energy leaked by electronics and appliances which are TURNED OFF but still plugged in. When you’re done using something, such as toasters, coffee makers, lamps, etc, UNPLUG it.

Starbucks is making an effort to save the environment through partially recycled cups, but if you bring your own reusable mug, they will discount your coffee.

CFL’s (condensed fluorescent lights) may cost a bit more up front, but last much longer than incandescent lights (8-10 years) and will save you money on your energy bill the first month. These decrease the amount of energy used (by about 75%) which decreases the amount of coal burned in power plants which ultimately decreases air pollution.

The average person is responsible for emitting 94 lbs of carbon dioxide every day. It takes four trees to offset this per month. Plant four trees.

It is very common for the air inside to be twice as polluted as the air outside because of chemicals in everyday products. Cleaning products can often spark asthma attacks. Use environmentally friendly cleaning products such as Seventh Generation and Method for a real, safe clean, not a toxic and fake lemon smell.

If using disposable plates, use ones that are 100% recycled. They can be washed in the dishwasher and reused.

Organic foods aren’t grown with pesticides which can pollute our freshwater by runoff and threaten numerous species of plants and animals. They’re also healthier for you in general.

Instead of using multiple paper or plastic bags at any store, especially grocery store, bring your own reusable linen bag. Plastics make up the largest component of landfills and can not be broken down.

One thing to consider if you buy a plastic bottle is its grade. Look on the bottom of the bottle for a small plastic triangle with a number in the middle. If you see a number 2, 4 or 5, the bottle is safe. If it has some other number, don't use it as a water bottle. Those other plastics can make your water taste like plastic and leach harmful chemicals into your body.

Junk mail is not only annoying, but also requires 100 million trees and 20 billion gallons of water per year to create. By paying a mere dime a day, Greendimes will stop 70-90% of junk mail from being delivered to your house. Greendimes also promises to plant one tree a month for every member.

8 Billion ATM transactions occur every year and with that comes a huge amount of litter, receipts. If everyone were to stop getting receipts, about 2 billion feet of the roll would be saved (enough to circle the world 15 times). Next time you go to an ATM, don’t get a receipt.

RECYCLE! When you throw your garbage away, it doesn’t just disappear. It sits in landfills for decades… just sits there. By recycling a 4 foot high stack of newspapers, you are saving the equivalent to a 40 foot fir tree.

To decrease water consumption on a daily basis, replace your shower heads with low flow heads or aerated heads.

To save energy when doing laundry, wash clothing on a cold cycle. The dryer sucks up a massive amount of energy as well, and cleaning out the lint filter before every load will ease this.

ya we had earth day at my school. they said that if you leave chargers and other things plugged in (like a cell phone/laptop charger), it takes 90% of the energy and wastes it, and only takes about 5-10% to charge. LEAVE YOUR LAPTOP CHARGER UNPLUGGED untill you need to charge it up again. same goes for cell phone chargers (i started charging my cell in my car)

yea i really prolly shouldnt have said that. dont get me wrong im al for conservation and helping the planet and stuff, but lately i've been getting fed up with how some of the media has been going off the deep end about global warming and environmental issues. and fyi, im NOT trying to start a war with anyone im just saying my previous post was uncalled for and i like earth.

I dont mean to be a party pooper but I think earth day is a bunch of bullshit.....I know we are trying to cut down on using our natural resources......but your friend al gore, Mr. Global Warming......lives in a 10,000square foot house and pays a $1,200 monthly electric bill, and flies around the US in his private jet...so to me earth day is a bunch of happy horseshit

fuck that. Lithium ion batteries have a certain number of cycles so recharging your laptop 5 times a day will wear it out way faster.

I kinda feel like all this stuff is bullshit. Does recycling a bottle save more energy than it takes me to go out of my way to recycle it? Doubt it.

I've been watching Planet Earth all day. That show is so cool.

I went to the Green Apple Music and Arts Festival. A free, carbon neutral, all day concert in like three different cities. First, Stephen Marley (for those of you who live in a ditch, Bob Marley's son) played and then Damien Marley came on to join him for a few songs. Then Bob Weir (guitarist for the Grateful Dead) and Ratdog played and Sammy Haggar came on to join for a song or two. Goddam that was a good show.

well considering you arent the one doing the actual recylcing... yes its probably worth it. and its not the one bottle you throw away. its all the "one bottles" that the world throws away that makes a difference.

thats why i was going for the if everyone does something little it makes a difference theme here.

is that serious? just because one person is a little hypocritical about caring for the environment, you automatically jump the the conclusion that the entire concept of Earth Day is bullshit?

I have to put extra effort into recycling. Instead of throwing all my shit in one can and going to one dumpster I have to sort through my garbage. Find out what the recycling company takes and when, then go out of my way to put it somewhere else. Does recycling actually save more energy than I put forth actually recycling? If I'm expending extra energy that isn't going to be saved then aren't I making the problem worse?

not sure if this is off-topic but whatever.

so I live in oregon, right? LOTS o trees.

so some (really smart) dude comes along and sees this hill/mountain.

he says to himself "hey that would make a sweet ski resort!' so he starts buying property and arranging things when all of a sudden the tree-hugger bust in and say "HEY! ur gonna cut down too many trees if you make this resort!"

so a large legal battle ensues and now this guy can't build a ski hill.

ANGRY!

but yea, that is a little off topic.

I apologize.

i wouldn't mind as long as they made sure the trees weren't wasted and that the resort would be a "Green" resort. otherwise, i' agree w/ the "tree-hugger".
