Earlyish Season Backcountry in the Northeast

Have any of you guys started getting after it yet? I hiked the notch in VT for the first time yesterday and got up to the bottom of some of the chutes. Some spots were excellent, most were kinda sketchy. I'm hoping to check out the Franconia Notch area for the first time at some point, will probably going to wait until we get another storm to go out again. Anyone else?

Been itching to get out and skin either the backside of magic mountain (timber ridge) or a trail called Landslide that I've heard about on Mt. Equinox. Waiting for a decent snow before breaking out all of the gear.

Trip out to MT planned for March. Other than that, I'd like to do Big Jay and a few Tucks trips this season.

Hey hit me up before you head to Timber Ridge/ Magic and I can hook you up with friends that skin and ride that side all the time. Also bring a water skiing rope w a big carabiner for easy hitch ins from randoms. Lots of sled action over there.

Btw did you know that show 'Building Wild' made a sick jib cabin up on top of Timber Ridge like two years ago? It's fucking sick. Rails all over up there too.

If you come to Franconia Notch be sure to give me a holler. I'll be around all winter and I'm looking for a partner in crime to venture up onto Lafayette

Is there ever an issue riding timber ridge since it's private property? Id like to go there this year as well as moosilauke, and tuckerman.

hell yeah man will do, I might try to get up there sometime over February break with some buddies

I've been getting acquainted with my skins with dawn skins at Pico before heading into work. Will be looking to move beyond the ski area once I get my legs and lungs to a place where I am good to crank some real vert.

Nothing better than catching sunrise on the quiet mountain.

Word. That sounds sweet. Looking to get after it if this winter storm Juno lives up to the hype.

Skinned magic today. The hike up was good and I saw a couple of other skiers out there earning it. Only ended up taking one lap because my skins froze up on the glue side and wouldn't stick to my skis (has this ever happened to anyone else?). I was kinda bummed that we only got around 3 inches out of this storm. I was hoping for more... :/

In any case, I'm glad I got my first tour of the season.

Where did you put them when you skied? Back in your bag?

put your skins inside your jacket and the snow will melt off. Or lick the snow off; skin glue tastes good.

Yesterday I went on a exploratory mission in the northern Daks to find early season alternatives to the high peak slides. A few miles past Azure Mountain are some decent looking pitches that appear to have been logged a few years ago, so they are pretty wide open and decently steep. We left pretty late and it ended up being a much longer approach than we had anticipated (Never trust Paxton's beta), so we ran out of light before we could ski. Definitely looks like it could be a worthwhile repeat if we leave earlier in the day. Praying for some snow to come in and make the slides available, though.

I skinned up Bolton yesterday morning and skied Teardrop off mansfield on sunday. The chutes at Bolton were great, Teardrop had good sections but could use a little more snow to fill in more. We did a lot of Bushwhacking on sunday.

Pico/Killington area is on-point right now. Been grabbing pre-work turns at Pico 3-4 times a week and this morning was just perfect with 8-10" of new with temps around -20. Little windblown on the main trails but get in the trees and it was perfect. Good base depths, great snow conditions. Only concern is the snowpack is so soft that any warm weather is going to knock it down real quick.

Skinned big blue last night just outside of Boston. Short run but the conditions were perfect in the woods and the full moon provided all the light we needed. Excited to try and get another tour in Sunday. Any recommendations of good spots in Southern NH would be greatly appreciated. Let it snow!

Went up to Ascutney today. Skin track was in great condition and there were at least 10 other people out there spinning laps. I ended up getting two myself. It's deep up there like you would expect, but there's a lot of scrub brush that's grown in since the place went out of business, even on the main trails. You kind of have to pick your line through it all.

That place is sweet and actually kinda steep. I wish I had gotten up there once or twice while it was still a resort. I do a lot of biking there in the summer, but this is the first time I've ever skied. There are a lot of 10-15 foot cliffs that'll go with just a little maintenance to the takeoff or landing (mostly just brush that needs to be tossed out of the way). Also, the old lift platforms could be fun to jib. I'm gonna try to make it back up next week at some point.
